Singer and performing artist, Rick James is guest on 'The Late Late Show with Tom Snyder' during this sincere 07-21-1998 interview.
#tomsnyderintervie #tomsnyderinterviews
Rick James (1948-2004) was an American singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and record producer. Born and raised in Buffalo, New York, James began his musical career in his teen years. After forming the locally popular Stone City Band in his hometown of Buffalo in 1977, James finally found success as a recording artist after signing with Motown's Gordy Records, releasing the album Come Get It! in 1978 which produced the hits "You & I" and "Mary Jane". In 1981, James released his most successful album, Street Songs, which included career-defining hits such as "Give It to Me Baby" and "Super Freak", the latter song becoming his biggest crossover single, mixing elements of funk, disco, rock and new wave. James was also known for his soulful ballads such as "Fire & Desire" and "Ebony Eyes". Rapper MC Hammer sampled James' "Super Freak" for his 1990 hit, "U Can't Touch This" which won Best R&B Song at the 1991 Grammy Awards. James received his only Grammy for composing the song. By the early 1990s, James' career was hampered by his drug addiction, and he was embroiled with legal issues. In 1993, James was convicted...while under the influence of crack cocaine, resulting in a three-year sentence at Folsom State Prison. James was released on parole in 1996 and released the album Urban Rapsody in 1997. James' health problems halted his career again after he had a mild stroke during a concert in 1998, and he announced a semi-retirement. Since he burst upon the scene in the late 70's with his unique brand of Punk Funk music, James has been an inspiration to his peers and won the acclaim of audiences and critics alike.
Tom Snyder (1936 - 2007) was an American pioneering television personality and figure in broadcast journalism who brought a no non-sense attitude to broadcast television news. He was best known for his late nigh talk shows Tomorrow (NBC) and The Late Late Show with Tom Snyder (CBS). His engaging style combined with his irascible attitude, made him one of the best-known journalists of his time, back when having a nationally televised and thought-provoking late-night talk show actually meant something. It was a totally different time in television, as the news was delivered as information with no spin or opinion of the newsman. He marked the end of an era.

Tom Snyder is a great interviewer. I like that he doesn’t pretend to be what he’s not and he is non-judgmental of Rick and his guests… You can tell Rick feels comfortable here, like the guy isn’t setting him up, even with the personal questions to make him look stupid or to sensationalize things for ratings. Tom seems genuinely concerned and like he’s having a conversation with another person he finds interesting. Great, great job!

Yes Michael, this interview with Rick James and Tom Snyder is one of the best interviews I've seen of Rick James. He was an intelligent man that sadly had drug dependence. It gave his body a lot of ailments late in his life. I remember Ricks music in high school . I was a teenager in the 80's. The 80's were the best times of my life! It was a different world then. I like Chapelle, but didn't find jokes about alcoholism/drug abuse a laughing matter. It's a shame that Rick couldn't stay off of drugs for good. I hope you have a great day!

Tom Snyder was the coolest, and he ''Got It'', he was really good with Black Guest. I know some of you don't want to make this a Racial thing but! Nothing racial about it. You're right. Most wh!te interviewers tend to be semi detached with their guests. The best ones I've enjoyed watching were Snyder, Dick Cavette and Mike Douglas. Snyder is at ease and comfortable with his guests in general. With black entertainers he was very much at ease and down to earth. No awkwardness or vapid approach at all. Cool guy all around.

Great comment. Tom Snyder was natural , informed , easy going and would flow naturally with his guests. Personally , I think most white interviewers tried to hard and came off very cringy and at the worst...ignorant. Mike Douglas also had a natural calm and was considerate with his guests.

I am so glad I found this, or did it find me. this was GREAT...MASTER Musician Rick James. 4 of my greatest artists of ALL time came out of Motown. Rick James, El Debarge, Stevie Wonder, and Michael Jackson. it doesn't get any better than them in my opinion/as far as having GREAT Musical Talent/abilities.

Toledo Ohio, 1978 or 79. I was 15, 16 yrs old. I was working at the #1 record shop in the city at the time. It was an urban establishment that catered to the predominantly black community. One day Rick James walks in. My favorite artist. The record shop owner also promoted all the concerts. I've seen just about every top funk, r&b, soul act live. Met a bunch of them as well. Most of them were really cool. But Rick James was the best if all for me. He was the realist by far. Rick James headlined. Prince co-headlined Rick closed the show. By the time the tour hit Toledo. They switched & Prince closed. I overheard the owner/concert promoter tell Rick that Prince asked him to ask Rick to "calm his show down since he's closing now". Rick James said " Fuck Prince, I ain't calming shit down. I'm Rick James". This is a true story I made short. Fast forward. I'm watching Chappelle with my wife. I've told her this story in detail many times plus other chance meetings with others. My mom & brother confirmed. But we're watching the Chappelle show. I didn't see when Rick James said "I'm Rick James Bitch" it had a buzz. But long after. My wife & I was watching Chappelle when that famous " Rick James Bitch" segment aired. This was my 1st time hearing, but this the Chappelle show. I jumped so high off the couch, & was that's Rick James. That's exactly how he talk. I knew those skits about Rick had to be true. It was an perfect imitation of Rick James. But back when I met Rick, he only said " I'm Rick James". And that part sounded exactly how I heard it on the Chappelle show. True story everybody.

I'm happy that he's transparent in this interview about his substance abuse. I don't judge him. He made all those great albums under the influence. I enjoyed some of those albums. Liked that he shared the experience about his Mother. Sad but it was the slave mentality his Mom was used too. Never saw this interview. His perspective is blatant and transparent. I wish that he focused on his career. But, he became disjointed about the racism in America and the music business. I feel that is the reason he was against Prince. Because in my opinion Prince had a chance because of MTV. Rick James didn't get that MTV presence. He understood that he had his time. Tom asked a stupid question about Rap music. Rick James of course didn't like the Hiphop culture. But they loved him. Hiphop reinvented everything. That's the art form. These kids knew that they had to make a statement. Public Enemy made sure that Hip Hop music was legit. Rest in Power King Rick. Thanks for your awesome contribution to the creative arts. Legend Forever. Rest in Power Tom. This was a great interview.
