AE86 Digital Cluster Install | 4k | - Everything You Need to Know

The AE86 digital cluster is one of my favorite OEM parts for these cars. After about a decade of building AE86s, I finally have one installed on my car. This install wasn't straightforward, there were a few things that I hadn't seen in any forum posts of "how-tos" over the years.

actually, those digital clusters were an option in the U.S. they came in the celica and the supra... along with the OG swan logos... super rare

Digital clusters were an option in the US for the supra, Celica, Cressida, and a few others - but they were never an option in the US for the AE86. They are different for each chassis.

Great video! Thanks for taking the time to make these step by step tutorials. Beams swapped 86 owner here running the oem analog cluster with a link ecu. Do you know if the tach will work with no modifications?

No prob! This tach will need similar modifications as the analog tach. I've been researching how to get it sorted out

Also for the fuel sender, I'm using the stock analog one but I put an Arduino inline in between the cluster and fuel sender and programed the Arduino to read the analog signal from the sender and output the digital voltage to the cluster.

hey man, i just watched this vid as i didnt have time the first time. but i was under the impression you had to run a new sensor wire from the digi fuel sender to the dash, becuase the wiring was different ? so your sender might not be faulty @@DoctoredGarage

Hmmm. I'll take a look at the wiring diagrams. It's the same plug for digital and analog level sender, the pins might be different though? Not sure atm

yeh i think, because its a voltage refrence instead of a resistance one ? but when i was looking into it years ago, the wiring was different. @@DoctoredGarage

Hey Richard! I don't make the plug and play adapter, but there are a few people out there that do if you can provide them with the connectors from the digital cluster and some pieces from the old cluster.

If I have analog cluster and want to convert the digital, Should I use adapter or converter from Analog to Digital?

I'm not sure I understand what you're asking - if your car has an analog cluster, you will have to either use an adapter or wire in the connectors for the digital cluster.

Didn't the digital cluster come on the mid '80s Camry liftbacks as well? I swear I saw a video that had one of these in it.

It's possible that there is one for a Camry, but they are vehicle specific. The Cressida had one as well.

Do your cluster backlights dim with the rheostat? Mine don’t but the backlight dims. I’m running incandescents. I think one of the pins may have been missed on my harness.

I wish I could tell ya, but my rheostat is busted and stuck on full bright 😆

After some more research, according to a Japanese site, the backlight does not in fact interact with the rheostat. Only the digital display does. @@DoctoredGarage
