@@Progressionmotorsports USDM 4AGE uses an AFM not a MAF. While the objective is to end up with a measurement of the total amount (by mass) of air that is going in, the function and method of signal interpretation is entirely different. An AFM is not a "mass flow device." Air flowing through the AFM causes a spring-loaded "flapper" door to deflect an amount proportional to the dynamic pressure of air flow. The AFM sends both flapper door angle and temperature to the ECU in separate signals. The ECU interprets the flapper door angle as dynamic pressure and combines this with the temperature reading to determine the mass flow. A MAF is a "mass flow device." The ECU interprets the cooling of a heated wire element in the MAF to determine the mass flow. The lower the temperature, the greater the density, and/or the greater the volume passing over the heated element, the greater the cooling.
@Mr.4AGE5 жыл бұрын
@@Progressionmotorsports This is also why you can clock an 4AGE AFM. It is a common trick used to make the engine run rich. you wouldn't be able to clock a MAF since there is nothing to calibrate and usually has no moving parts

@lPartyBoy69 You're the one getting facts from cartoons. There is a car known as the AE85, it came in both Trueno and Levin variants. You can not tell an 85 and an 86 apart from the outside except if you look at the rear axle because the 85 came with drum brakes, but still that can be swapped. Let me repeat: Levin and Trueno are COSMETIC packages. The AE85 could be bought in BOTH Levin and Trueno. The AE86 could also be bought in BOTH Levin and Trueno. I wish Initial D used a Trueno AE85 so 12 year olds wouldn't keep screaming about any Levin being an 85 on the internet
@ericsson_motorsports3 жыл бұрын
Levin is not the same as 85, the 85 simply refers to a different engine and drivetrain changes. From the way you're taking I'll assume that you do not own a Trueno, even if you didn't just make it up then you are still very ignorant. The difference between a Levin and Trueno are the lights and some other small things, there is no difference in the drivetrain. A simple google search can give you that information

Great video and excellent points. I spent a good part of my childhood in Japan and learned how to drive there. When I was a kid (I'm 40 now) everyone I knew made a distinction between the 86 and the 85 (myself included). But I never really understood why. The chassis was the same. The differences were in the engine and other drivetrain components and interior. Basically all the differences were stuff that could of been unbolted and swapped out. In high school I had an R31 Skyline Passage GT Hardtop with an RB20DET and my dad had a standard R31 Skyline Sedan with the single cam RB20E. But no distinctions were made about those two versions of that chassis. Even though there were clearly structural differences between the hardtop and sedan models. They were both still R31s. So why is the chassis designation different for the AE85 and AE86?

RM|S13 is the code for USDM hatchback S13 with KA24 DOHC RH|S13 is UDM hatchback S13 with SOHC M|S13 would be a USDM coupe S13 with a DOHC KA24 etc. S13 is always part of ID number, it's just in the mix with the other option letters. with the s13, it says "PMS13" on the plate, which refers to the JDM model, the USDM one is "RMS13". so yes, it does say S13, it just had extra code in front of it to indicated where it is from

I agree with your reasoning in referring to the car by its model (AE86), but your assertion of "inconclusive" is incorrect. The points in question are definitive and factual. "Irrelevant" would better suit the case you're making. The fact that the VIN describes the vehicle as "AE88" is *irrelevant* due to the fact that the production model number clearly labels it as "AE86."

Indeed! Thanks for pointing this out. There are plenty other points that suggest this. VINs aren't "Confidential." They are an essential to the history of a car as an identity. It helps no only to identify the car's build history, but also it's driving history with ownership and if it contains defects, insurance issues, or liens. Lemme guess, you covered your AE86 VIN because you know it's either was an "insurance write-off" or it has a sketchy history.

The VIN of any vehicle in a public place is essentially public information since it is right on the dash. I can see covering that VIN as a precautionary measure since many people will be seeing this video but I don't think it is strictly necessary. I think it's a similar deal with people covering their license plates: maybe a hundred people a day or more see my plate so it isn't private at all.

Thanks for clearing this up! I see a very familiar photo at 6:28. I vividly remember shooting that photo: and you know what? That AE86 managed to do 400K and is still on its first paint. The engine needed a rebuild though... I have a question though, that you may be able to help out with: there is a difference in the size of the windshield between Japanese and EUDM models: the JDM is slightly higher. So anyone in the EU ordering a windshield for their JDM AE86 will have a big issue. Since you have access to both USDM and JDM, can you measure and see if there is a difference between those as well?

Here in Australia the AE86 only came out with the 4AC, T50 and S series diff. No VIN, only the frame number and model number both which contain "AE86". The difference worldwide between them all is what they came out in the local market with; whether it's a 3AC mounted to a K50, a 4AC mounted to a T50, a 4AGE with either a T50 or A42DL, S or T series diff, solid or vented front discs, drum or disc rear, the chassis and body are the same.

@7:20 "And heres the culprit.. the MAF sensor" Even worse than that, and a slight correction: USDM Ae86s use AFM sensors in place of MAF sensors. MAF/Mass air flow meters have a heated wire insidie, and then calculate air flow based on how the wire is being cooled due to incoming air. AFM/ Air flow meters (I know, its silly. exact same letters, different configuration), or to be specific here (as there are, of no surprise), a vane air flow meter, basically have a spring loaded door that is flapped-open by the intake of air- the sensor reads the angle at which the door is being opened, and uses that to calculate air flow.

Let's compare it to a FJ40 vs FJ45. F - for the F-series gasoline engines - J - for Land Cruiser platform - 4 - again the generation - 0 - short wheelbase/whatever. The 5 at the end of FJ45 stands for long wheelbase (wagon, troop carrier or pick up model).

here's a fun tidbit for you guys: the AE88 USDM model has Canadian-manufactured front and rear bumper assemblies. You are fundamentally wrong about the problem with the chassis code naming. You see the last digit is always related to engine configuration. AW11 for a 1.6, and AW10 was a 1.5 - a mysterious creature I have never seen but it's on the JDM catalog up on goo-net for all to see. AE86 and AE85 is called the way they were called because in Japan you either had a 4A-GE by yamaha or a 3A-U by Toyota. the 4AGE puts it at 1.6L catrgory and the 3AU at a 1.5L. Since there is no 3rd variant it's easier to identify the cars that way than going after the SR, GT, GT-APEX name which Japanese people will not remember nor care to remember. Same goes for AE100 and AE102 which we got both versions in North America you have a 1.6 and a 1.8 variant. how about this: AE85 = anything with the 1.5L and AE86 = anything with a 1.6L since North American SR5 came with a unique 4A-C it's still an AE86. However, since there is then no real way to tell an AE86 GTS from an AE86 SR5 why don't we just call the SR5 AE85 so that we can all sleep easy? If you don't want to you can call either one AE86 I guess since it's the same idea with Honda DC2.... LS or Type R are all DC2 if it's a 2 door hatchback bodystyle..... It just happens that Toyotas tend to have different chassis code for different engine displacements and that's what it is.
@Progressionmotorsports8 жыл бұрын
My conclusion is that regardless of the models. We call them all AE86 as a universal nickname to refer to this generation corolla. It's as simple as that. I don't want people fussing over the different models of practically the same car.
@hk200008 жыл бұрын
It's not a big fuss and tbh no one is going to call the Corolla GT-S an AE88 anyway. Mr R himself made it a point in his more recent EF hatch video in that the North American version isn't even a EF to brgin with. We still call them EF hatch because people like to call things what's convenient for them for distinguishing one thing for another. As long as you know what EF hatch is I don't need to tell you it's actually not what it is. (For that matter, the beloved 96-2000 body style Civic Si was never a EK coupe either, but that's what people will call it forever) It's just a long and convoluted video to argue about a non-argument.

I know actually what your talking about, here is a example: in the DSM (Diamond Star Motors) world that I'm apart of, mitsubishi joint venture with Chrysler and made cousins of the same car like the Eagle Talon, Plymouth Laser and of course Mitsubishi Eclipse. Now there was the non turbo versions, like the SOHC 1.8 4g37 and DOHC 2.0 4g63. Even though they were made in the same plant, us turbo 4g63 guys won't call them DSMs just because it's not a turbo 4g63. Same goes for 95-99 when they used dodge engines for the non turbo models, we won't consider them DSMs but........technically they can because the chassis is a DSM built. It's not that we aren't car enthusiast, but if your used to seeing a car of what you drive and others call it the same you feel apart of that group to feel like you have a special bond or special build "real deal" Brand type, you automatically call it that regardless of actual facts. Doesn't make a car guy not be a enthusiast, that what they used to call those types of cars, doesn't make them a bad person. I catch myself do the same it, it's just second nature to car guys, it is what it is.

US version ended at 98 with supra 2jz-gte "turbo" badge or without that badge with 6 and 4 speed or supra 2jz-ge na with 4 speed while worldwide ended in 2002. Every supra has the Targa top or hard top. JDM have the OEM skirt and rear spats/front active spoiler lip. There's the rz 2jz-gte with auto or manual, rz-s 2jz-gte vvti with semi auto added/bigger disc brake rotor/bigger LSD, sz-r 2jz-ge with manual 6 speed, 5 speed, or auto 4 spee......you know where this is going. Like he said, it's a thing with Toyota xD.

Thanks. It's been noted. I've heard it being said both ways (especially when comparing the two sensors). But it seems people prefer this abbreviation better. Cheers~

nice video. I just wanted to point out that a VIN number is not just a US thing. We use them in the UK and Europe.
@isher90355 жыл бұрын
It's the same way with Honda. The chassis numbers vary by country they're exported to. Also, until the 2000s, engines were detuned for USDM export for emissions concerns and fuel concerns. USDM Integra Type Rs make less power than JDM because of lower compression. At the end of the day, the body and overall chassis is still the same. The only real difference is the hardware attached. It's not like the Honda City Turbo, where the chassis for the hard top turbo is not the same as a regular City, but actually a Cabriolet with a hard roof.

The worst sacrilege one can commit is putting any Nissan motor in an AE86 even if it's just a USDM SR-5
@SCREAMILLUSION8 жыл бұрын
You know a VIN is used in most countries not just the US right? To make sure a car matches up to it's paper work etc. Hence why chop shops will file them off/cut them off/out. When chopping up a car for parts.

I wish there was more love for the next gen Trueno, the AE92. It may be FWD, but it's still so much fun to drive. Although the only problem is that they are rare, even in Japan, making it hard to find parts for. Especially when it comes to the JDM Trueno front bumper, which are almost impossible to find :(

Wasn't there an AW11 MR2 that had the same sort of engine as the AE85? I think it was called an AW10.

The true is that trueno 86 has nothing special, and initial D wanted to show that the real power wasn´t in the car but in the driver, now there is this people trying to make something big from something that is actually not.
@Tunerdude948 жыл бұрын
So what I can gather from this video is... the VIN is irrelevant. And all AE86's can be referred as such. I noticed this in my AE92's VIN. It reads, "AE98" but the model is still AE92. Also is there a way to convert from a MAF to a MAP setup? Would that even be necessary?
@beefcakemonsta7 жыл бұрын
TBH that kind of discrimination between JDM and USDM toyota's has been happening way before the corolla's. A good example would be the USDM and JDM TA22 Celicas. different trims, engine and exterior trim (ie bumpers, grills and lights). It all has to do with the regulation that US makes on imported cars so that domestic cars are more desirable, if they don't pass the standards they won't be given any approval of selling it. It's not also japan that is affected, EU cars are also slung along with the US standards, one great example was the FIAT 124 spyder, to pass US standards, they have to increase the ride height, put hideous overriding bumpers.

It is not a MAF sensor. It is a AFM. It does not measure air mass, it measures air flow. It has a flapper, not a hot wire.

While this is true, you can't deny how convenient it is to say. The 86 and 88 designations are able to better demonstrate the connection between the cars, as well as implying how similar but different they are. This is in contrast to saying Trueno GT-Apex AE86 and Corolla GT-S, which are very different designations. The GT-S is very, *very, VERY* similar to the Trueno AE86, but the minute power difference (the car had to be *built differently* for it), as well as being LHD, (not to mention the big 'GT-S Twin Cam 16' lettering on the side) are differences nonetheless. It may not be a huge difference, but it separates the two. You can slap the ɛ̃fini badge on a USDM Mazda RX-7 FD3S, but it doesn't make it an ɛ̃fini. And you can slap a Trueno badge on a GT-S, but it still isn't the real deal. Is it closer to the AE86 model than the SR5? Yes, definitely. But that's why you call it an SR5, and those small differences, but huge similarities between the GT-S and the Trueno AE86 *earn* it the name of AE88. Also AE86 being the JDM and AE88 being the USDM is so engrained in people's minds they know exactly what you're talking about when you say it.
@ev0se7en8 жыл бұрын
Great, now do one on the USDM integra. At least you can make Integra GS-R owners feel as if their cars are as special as the authentic JDM Type-r's.

I now know why we use chassis codes to identify a car: there are wayyyy too many little differences to name that it would be tiring. Especially in Japan, they have way too many sub-models.

I don’t think the VIN is a US only thing I can’t speak for the other provinces but I know to register and insure vehicles in BC you need a VIN even if the vehicle didn’t come with one because it’s for example imported from Japan or a super vintage car you have to take proof of ownership in to ICBC and they issue a VIN for it

One problem you didn't mention is that Toyota used the Corolla nameplate and AE8x chassis codes on a *completely different car*; the AE82 Corolla DX and LE four-door sedan and five-door hatchback. Throw in Chevy Novas which had GM VINs and the Corolla FX which arrived late and overlapped the E90 and...aargh.
