@@kaelahoran214 I hope we do with the Conquest , there are some mysteries there and would be very interesting to see the realm not unified in the state it was in at that time and how that structure functioned / seeing it in action. If it were me i would have started with the Conquest. Especially those non-book fans I don't think they will have the proper context starting with the Dance of the Dragons and why not start at the origins of the House in Westeros with Aegon I. I hope eventually we do get a Conquest series , even if it should have come first imo. As far as the books , i hope we just get the books in the universe he plans to write at this point. TWoW has still not come out , ADoS should be an easier more straight forward write but that will still be another giant book. F&B part 2 has a lot to cover , and a planned nine more D&E. I think we will be lucky to get all that given he has so many other projects be it on the page or on the screen. I honestly think we will be lucky to get all those books in the ASOIAF universe on the schedule, given his age , his health (does not seem the best) and that he is a very slow writer. Plus he spreads himself so thin with so many projects , believe he is working on a video game that comes out early in 2022 , look at how many TV series are planned or in the works in this or his other universes. I have my doubts though i do hope we will get all the planned books in the ASOIAF universe but at the moment I can not see us getting any thing beyond those works.

I think Robert is missing a point about Carthage. It's not so much that they were sailors and traders Carthage was a big culture around the time Rome was first growing, and they came into conflict. Despite some initial victories Cathage lost and their capital was utterly destroyed and left in ruins, with the people becoming slaves or refugees. That is the main comparison with the Roynar. They came into conflict with the growing Valyrians, had some victories but ultimately lost, their capital was left in ruins, and the people became slaves or refugees.

Another reason for Baratheon era maesters to go "easier" on Aegon is that he's the reason there's one king. If they painted all Targaryeans with the same brush then Robert wouldn't have had much argument why HE should be king over all rather than Westeros be divided.
@JervisGermane
@JervisGermane 3 жыл бұрын
27:55 I've wondered for a long time if this was going to be significant to the plot at any point. They've been called the Seven Kingdoms for a long time, but at the point of the invasion, there were really 9. You can make a case for 7 in that two were combined at the time and you can say that Aegon wasn't styled a king on Dragonstone, but for all practical purposes they were 9 independent kingdoms, not 7.
@herbthompson8937
@herbthompson8937 Жыл бұрын
How in the hell do you get 9? There were 7, he conquered 6
@JervisGermane
@JervisGermane Жыл бұрын
@@herbthompson8937 You can quibble over the Targaryen holdings and Dorne, because the lords paramount there didn't use the title King, but prior to the conquest there were 9 realms where there was a sovereign lord that didn't owe fealty to anyone above them: The North, the Vale, the Riverlands, the Iron Islands (which you can also quibble about because they were temporarily both ruled by the same king), the Westerlands, the Reach, the Stormlands, Dragonstone and its vassals, and Dorne. That's 9 independent kingdoms, of which 7 used the title King. Dorne was ruled by a Princess and Aegon's pre-conquest title was Lord, but it's still 9 different political states.
@herbthompson8937
@herbthompson8937 Жыл бұрын
@JervisGermane a different political state doesn't equate a kingdom. Dragonstone was not a kingdom. The Riverland were ruled for 2 or 3 generations by the Iron Islands, it wasn't a temporary thing. There were 7 kingdoms when he came to conquer
@JervisGermane
@JervisGermane Жыл бұрын
@@herbthompson8937 Okay. I'm not saying you're wrong to define it that way, but Westeros was referred to as the Seven Kingdoms even before the conquest. There were 9 independent states for quite a while before that, and if you look at any of the great houses and lords paramount, there will be 9 families to list, but it was still referred to as Seven Kingdoms. I think they even called it that in the days of the petty kings when there were really hundreds of small kingdoms in Westeros. You have to define a kingdom a certain way or prune something down for some reason to get it to 7. You could argue that the Iron Islands and Dragonstone are the 2 that don't count because they're not part of mainland Westeros, or that Dragonstone and Dorne are the 2 that don't count because their rulers weren't called kings. You're arguing that the Riverlands and Dragonstone are the two that don't count because Aegon already had control of Dragonstone and the Riverlands weren't independent on the day in question. All of those work to make it fit, but why does it need to be made to fit at all? The point of my original comment is that we see a ton of this kind of thing in the books, where details have to be tailored to fit a narrative or serve some kind of symbolic purpose. The Dance of the Dragons is called that even though the intro to The Princess and the Queen says the Maesters consider it an inappropriate name. The War of the Five Kings is called that even though people argue *within the story* that there were no more than four kings in existence at any one time. I wonder if there's going to be something else that's going by a popular but technically inaccurate name in a way that's going to be plot-relevant, such as a power structure with more than 3 leaders still being referred to as a dragon with 3 heads. We see people in the story deny facts in the name of preserving the story they're familiar with, waving away objections with statements like "It is known." We see that in real life too. If George is commenting on that, I have a hunch we're going to see something affect the plot that we won't see coming because it doesn't fit the branding that characters and readers alike like to stick to.

I feel like the first prequel should have been Aegon's Conquest, and even better, adding old Valyria too. First season could be like an origin and back and forth of the original Targs Aegon planning his conquest. Episode 9 being the Doom followed with a Season Finale of Aegon setting for Aegonfort from Dragonstone. Both storylines, because we only have so little material, could have played together for 1 solid buildup of a season. 2nd-3rd Seasons, just like GoT, would be the ensuing conquests/battles made by Aegon, Rhaenys, and Visneya. Great and easy way to stretch the material as well world-building for the fans. Dorne, Harrenhal, the Eyrie, and Storm's End could all be fleshed out into greater detail. Last couple seasons finish up their reign and ending with Maegor the Cruel... setting the stone for more Targaryen legacies and madness. Then you hit us with Dance, Rebellions, etc... Idk. I just feel like if they go back further from Dance for the next one, it'll feel odd. You can't prequel a prequel...

I understand this is fantasy and it is not real but when reading the dance i was upset to read about how these amazing dragons killed and tore each other apart. When I read the dance I am sad maybe because I know this will be the end of the dragons but the senseless brutality makes it very hard for me to read.

I understand the rumors about Aegons heirs not being legitimately his. But I also feel that prior to the births of his son the three Targaryens didn’t have time to worry about children. Not to mention the stress war puts on the body which can effect a woman’s ability to get pregnant and maintain a pregnancy. I’ve just always thought once the conquest was over, that’s when they had the time, desire/need, and free time to work on producing heirs.

I love what you do and hate to criticise but you really should sort out your mic position. As the volume of your voice rises and falls there is huge amount of audio loss. And sometimes it is almost impossible to hear what you are saying.
