I am privileged to have seen the original broadway production with a lady who had taken me under her wing [and got the tickets through her connections] . After the show we went to a piano bar in Greenwich Village where Joel Grey was being lionised. What a wonderful evening.

He was so splendid in that role. I had the pleasure to see him do the role. That was even better!

It truly was a delight! I agree! When I saw it he did something interesting. Toward the end when you think it is over, they go into a medley of other songs that Cohen wrote. At that point, quite an older couple started to leave, I imagine to not have to fight the crowd when they left. At that point, Grey broke character and told them they didn't want to leave as there were some more great songs that he didn't wasn't them to miss. Some people wouldn't have appreciated him breaking character. I thought it was nice that he didn't let them miss the nice medley at the end. Hard to imagine anyone else except Gray or Cagney getting it right!

This is vaguely reminiscent of his TV version of George M. Did anybody besides me see that?

He wasn't channeling Cagney, which made it his own.

Love Grey in Cabaret. Cohen will always mean Cagney. Now let me go watch "off the record" on youtube.

I can't stand Joel Grey. He's got none of the warmth and charm of either Cagney or Cohan. The entire hook of "George M!" was that the real Cohan was an a-hole behind the scenes. This theory was based on the feud between Actor's Equity and Cohan after they called a general strike which shut down his shows. In reality, Cohan was one of the nicest people a Broadway actor could work with. He was generous and mentored other actors (Spencer Tracy) who became famous in their own right. In Cohan's own words, "If they'd told me 'we're going to bring down your shows, but we don't mean you', it would've made all the difference."
