King Aegon II can't quite keep up when his younger brother Prince Aemond speaks to him privately in a full room of people using High Valyrian. The conversation takes a couple turns; first when Aegon shares his displeasure in the plotting of war behind his back, and second when Aemond speaks very fluent High Valyrian. It seems obvious Aegon is a novice in his House's native language.

@ksourisadok8961 Aegon was a teenager who had little ambitions to be king, so he's not power hungry, and we have seen that before Jaehyras's death (I think that also messed him up a bit) he had sympathy for the small folk. He does have some good ideas, and the way he holds his council members, like Otto and Lyaras, responsinsible is actually a good thing. Maybe if his mother spent less time slapping him around and yelling at him, probably causing him to drink more, he would actually have made something of himself. I don't think Aemond's ruthlessness and vengeance makes him a good candidate for the throne either. He practically started the war.

When they speak in High Valyrian, it is intimate. It is familial. Aemond speaking in High Valyrian demeans Aegon for many reasons, including the contents of his speech, but my favorite part of it is him telling "I'm not speaking to the king, but rather to my (foolish) siblings now."

I don't actually know Aegon's proficiency level with High Valyrian, its possible, like you said, that he may have understood what was said to him but lacked the ability to communicate back in the language.

It’s easier to RECOGNIZE the words as you hear them, but it’s much harder to REMEMBER the words you want to say in reply. Especially conjugations in stating things in past or future tenses.

Otto and Alicent wanted someone who could be a puppet ruler for them. This is where a lot of Aegon's frustrations are coming from, he got forced into a throne he didn't even want and after he took it everyone either ignores or outright mocks him. I think that is why he pulled that little stunt later on, to try to prove himself to his family and council. Aemond would had been a much worse king for the greens. He is pretty much the green version of Daemon and is known to be extremely vengeful and cunning, not something they'd want in a puppet ruler.

I think his mind did a 180 during his coronation in the dragon pit. Nothing could compare to looking on to thousands of people shouting your name and celebrating your rise. It is a sort of artificial love for sure, but it is love. In my family we speak 3 languages. The family members that are not fluent will understand what is being said most of the time since it is an easier "passive" process and will speak it with lots of errors most of the time because that's the hard "active" process. The way, from my polyglot experience, that Aegon was portrayed was as someone that can read and hear High Valyrian and make sense of some words but will make mistakes or speak it slowly, in other words, his lack of fluency is blatant and intentional. We had a similar contrast with Jace/Jacaerys learning High Valyrian, understanding but mixing words. Meanwhile Daemon, Rhaenyra, the Dragon keepers and some Maestres are all fluent, no stutter, no speech impediment just clean High Valyrian. I am also forced to mention that it is a legit language made by David J. Peterson, a polyglot, a linguist, that has created up to 50 languages, High Valyrian amongst them and he has been hired many times during GoT and HotD to write scripts in High Valyrian.

I genuinely feel sad for him. He was neglected by Viserys, Allicent, his whole family basically. When he first becomes King he seems to have at least some idea of how to be a gracious King (the sheep guy) until Otto basically says 'we rich he poor so no food cheers king'. Then his child IS DECAPITATED. Yes he responds VERY poorly but, come on. Go to any John Wick Dog Scene video and see how many calls for blood there are for puppycide. And folk think that a man in a position of ABSOLUTE POWER, who has just had his child, not dog, CHILD, brutally murdered, would NOT react like Aegon? When they rounded up all the servants I actually thought he was gonna execute THE WHOLE CASTLE so he actually was less bloodthirsty than I expected. But then theres the big part - your comment. He says to his mother how he feels. That he feels useless, disrespected, etc and what does she say? 'Yep. You are. Just shut up and go drink or something.' And even then he doesn't just fly off. He drinks. And drinks. And stews. And stews. And drinks. All the while likely hearing all these voices in his head. His mother. Viserys. Etc. So he goes to the one creature that loves him. His dragon. The biggest most genuinely happy smile I'd ever seen on Aegon's face - when Sunfyre nuzzled his chest. Then he gets BLASTED out of the sky by his brother. Falls to the ground with his only friend squealing in agony. And what does Sunfyre do in her last moments despite her wounds? Curls her tail and broken body around Aegon, shielding him until the last. His only true friend. Only for (ok this is up for interp but) OWN BROTHER to draw his sword and consider ending his life. Aegon isn't a good person. He isn't an evil person. He is a goddamn TRAGIC person.

High Valyrian might be different from Old Valyrian. The same way Vulgar Latin was a common tongue for the Roman Empire while Classical Latin was written for official documents, but in this show High Valyrian is actually spoken while nobody ever really spoke Classical Latin.

This is brilliant in many ways… Aside from the obvious intimacy of speaking a language nobody else really knows, it’s obvious that Aemond KNEW his brother couldn’t speak the language… So instead of him trying to be discreet regarding his brother’s behaviour, he humiliates him in front of EVERYONE by demonstrating his ineptitude. It’s like putting down a petulant child rather than talking to a king. If Aegon Targaryen, the King of Westeros named after Aegon the Conqueror, can’t speak High Valyerian, the language of kings… then what kind of king is he, really?

Aemond even said he’s the one who studies, trains with weapons and has the world’s largest dragon and that he should be the king. This scene here shows it. Aemond speaks Valyrian so well like Valyria is alive today while Aegon who’s a man child speaks Valyrian like a beginner.

I honestly feel like if Aemond just let Criston tell the king of his plan and made it seem as if it were his alone and not a scheme by him and his brother then Aegon almost certainly wouldn’t have been at the battle of rooks rest. Aemond and Criston may be decent generals but they are far from good strategists as of yet. They tell Aegon to do absolutely nothing while simultaneously expecting him to be a great ruler and not be pissed that his son was killed in the middle of the night and likely still wants revenge for that. It’s clear that if they just had proper communication with their king, they would’ve never lost a dragon and never gotten stuck with a dying, crippled, and painkiller addicted mess of a ruler.
