There must have been an additional complication beside the compressor stall. I’ve been on two flights that had compressor stalls - both in the 1970s on 727s, center engine of course. But after the loud bang and shudder, we continued climbing and headed to our destination on both flights. No further problems. Perhaps this particular engine suffered collateral damage from the stall.

I was an airline pilot for only one year when I was a passenger on an SAS flight that had declared an emergency due to no oxygen at 35,000 feet. The flight crew was so panicky that I wish that I had been the flying pilot instead. I spent my time trying to calm the adult passengers around me, who were in tears, because of the quivering voice of the first officer, as he donned his oxygen mask.

After the incident, tower asked if they wanted to return to 06 and they said yes. After that approach asked for 33 but they were probably already configured the ils frequencies and everything for 06 approach. They had enough happening already in there.
