Interesting. In my experience, if I put the aerial roots into soil, new roots start to grow from the aerial roots. I’ve observed this with monstera and philodendron. They roots are plentiful and strong when I’ve repotted. I guess everyone’s experience is so different
@platitudestern51492 жыл бұрын
Yea... I think he's missed the mark here. Aerial roots.. most definitely can root, and I've ever chopped my monstera in half after it "crawled across the soil" and repotted it and it grew perfectly. Infact it's harder for me to transition "water roots" to soil rather than the other way. I also have crazy high humidity and the areal roots are crazy long.. I think rot just happens sometimes. 🤷🏼♀️

One thing I am trying out recently to transfer my newly water propagated plants from water to soil is to water the plant way more often in the first couple of days after I plant them in soil. And then gradually reduce the water to a normal level that you would for a plant in soil. It works well for me. Maybe the same method could be applied to established plants that people want to move from water to soil as well. It may worth a try.

I think I will keep it this way for now.. Also I've heard lots of people having succes with soil propagation.

When water propagating with a node that has/was an aerial root should you: A) cut the aerial root back to the node so that a water root can take it's place (and submerge node) B) just put the node including aerial root underwater (water roots will form from aerial root tip/node) C) leave aerial root on but position it above the water surfae while the node sits below water surface ?

When I have the chance I direct my Aeriel roots to.the soil. It creates a new plant so to say. When it comes time to chopping it will most likely end up successful. I prop my monstera albo with spagnum. Start when it's about 10 leafs. Wrap each section of aerial roots per leaf with spagnum covered with plastic wrap. Moisten each cluster at least every 4 days. By day 30 each cluster will have soil roots ready for cutting/planting with a node. FYI dont just plant wrap each cutting with the exact same method, but allow each cutting (the ends where it was cut) to dry out for at least 24 hours (prevents rot when planting). Have pots with at least 7 cuttings and it makes amazing progress each month. Get to see at least 6-7 new leafs per pot and can choose the best from those to make into mother plants.

You’ll actually notice that when the aerial roots dig into the soil, the part of the root in the soil is very different than the part that’s used to the air. It’s great when plants do it. It’s not great when you take the root part that’s used to air and then put it into soil.

@ratboy6693 жыл бұрын
ive found that spag is really good for transition, but ive actually had better results by slowly adding clean soil to the water about a tablespoon at a time, and as the water evaporates ill add more soil and eventually the roots will be fully transitioned to soil and you can move it to a pot

Just got a mature monstera deliciosa cutting with two aerial roots, trying to propagate on water but it’s getting rot, what do I do?
@rebeccamorgan66233 жыл бұрын
Thank you for this info - I have a monstera clipping I bought about 3 months ago. It barely had roots when I got it, and it was full of water roots about 3” long, including some coming out the aerial root, when I put it in LECA. Because it already had water roots, I wasn’t trying to keep the water level at 1/3 right away, but I did partially expose the roots and planned to gradually bring the water level down to 1/3 over time. I’m not sure what to do now because my plant got root rot right away. Ive lost most of the roots and the couple left have been trimmed back to remove rot, but it’s been several days since I trimmed and I see the rot is creeping back onto the ends. I don’t want to lose my clipping, but I’m not sure what to do. Please help! Any advice you can give would be so appreciated!!

So right now it's in moss/perlite the node is at the top of moss and the areal roots go straight in the cup ful of moss. Helpful video. I have some golden pothos plants climbing on our walls and I thought that they would continuously get bigger leaves but at a point they didn't get bigger anymore despite having many networking aerial roots. On a newer shorter vine, the leaves grew bigger again upon fertilizing the soil, but on other older vines the newly forming leaves still are the same as the last leaf before it even when fertilized. Do you have tips for getting bigger leaves again for these vines? Or is there a limit to climbing pothos growth depending on the mother plant/cutting?
