I clicked on this video and said I remember I had a schoolmate that was that plane. When I saw Ms Wong talking about her family my mouth drop open when l herd his name Jason. I remember we announcement of his passing at school. Jason was a great friend to all of us, he is truly missed. I never knew that there was a memorial and seeing his name on it brought tears. My Condolences to everyone that this has effective. I am glad that this story was told and to see what really happened. My deepest condolence to Ms. Wong.

My father witnessed it crashing. It flew directly over our house. We lived a few Residential blocks away from the crash. We had several pieces of the airliner fall on our cul-de-sac. It looked like the cone of the vertical stabilizer. It was embedded in the asphalt. I saw the small plane upside down in the ball field of Cerritos Elementary where I went to school. The smell throughout the air is something I will never forget.

I was about 14 or 15 when that happened. I never knew what burnt flesh smelled like until that incident. I remember seeing houses on fire and plane parts with red spatters, yellow tarps covering up bodies scattered throughout the neighborhood. And having to prove you lived in the neighborhood days after the crash. I remember thinking "I don't remember the Space Shuttle doing a flight.' Cause I heard a sonic boom sound and jets. Then I open the front door of our house and I see a big cloud of black smoke and I immediately realized it was a plane. Like everyone else I went out to see what happened and I walked towards Cerritos Elementary and saw the piper plane in the field but along the way I saw houses on fire. BTW I never saw any video on this until I was much older in a EMT or nursing class. This is the 3rd time I've ever watched a video on this and I never knew which families were affected.

My uncle was on that flight. We were at the airport with my cousin waiting for her dad. It was horrible seeing the news at the airport. And then hearing the news from the workers from Aeromexico. We got surrounded by newscasters. It was awful. I’ve hated flying since then.

My uncle was also on that flight too he was supposed to come back according to my grandmother on September 1 Labor Day but for some reason he wanted to get back before that and unknowingly he sealed his fate by changing his Flight one day earlier his name was Jaime Ventura ,I’ve seen on the internet that Cerritos has a memorial with all the names that passed away due to this accident,I live on the east coast next time I go I’ll pay my respects, even though I was 6 yrs old I still remember this uncle clearly, last time I saw him he took me and my mom to the supermarket and he loaned my mother some money 20/30$ so she could buy some groceries and he would bust her chops and this last time he was like don’t wait till I die to pay me back !😂,but 2 weeks later he died in this horrible crash I still remember my mother crying loudly when she received the phone call since she was very close to my uncle

I feel so sorry for Walter White. So much was not in his favor that day. My former husband was directed directly into the path of another aircraft on final into Chicago. He always counted the planes in line, knew something was off, looked around and saw United coming right at him. He changed course and United passed over him. That was in the 1970s.

This woman’s family was a part of our family. Her husband Frank E was on my Husband’s construction crew with SCE. Frank was such a good family man! His family spent time in the Sierra’s, with us and the entire crew, where the SCE crew were working at the time. He had a loving family. His children, 3 sons and a beautiful daughter, were respectful and fun to be around. My husband Frank H. and I were watching TV on August 31, 1986 when the news cut in about the plane crash. We knew Frank E lived in Cerritos. Another crew member called us and said it was Frank E’s neighborhood that was struck by the fallen plane. We were crushed when we received the news it was Frank E’s house that was hit the hardest. We saw on the news his 15 year old son had cameras and microphones shoved in his grief stricken face, by news crews. He had just escaped out his window, when the plane hit. Our hearts were broken. Mrs. E lost half her family that day. We will never forget Frank E and his family, and that tragic day. I haven’t seen Mrs. E since my husband Frank H organized a SCE memorial for her family’s loss. Mrs. E and her two surviving sons are forever in our hearts!

I was in my Army Reserves uniform, when I heard about this tragedy....I climbed block walls and was on scene before most of the Emergency personnel. I delivered medicines to families in the neighborhood, that could not leave their homes, or if they did, they could not return. later, I worked with the RED CROSS at the local high school, setting up and working the phone banks, going out to local mcdonalds stores, grocery stores, and rounding up donations for the families that were needing to stay at the shelter. the horrible things I saw this day was so bad, that I still to this day have vivid memories of it all.. One man staying at the shelter told me "I was in vietnam, but as bad as that was, I have never seen such horrible sights and smells as this is" Really a TERRIBLE thing to see and also for the neighborhood people to have to experience. I THANK GOD THAT I WAS ABLE TO DO AS MUCH AS I DID IN getting into and back out of the crash scene to deliver much needed medicines(child needing insulin, people needing toilet paper or food, etc.) long time ago, but a very real and lasting memory in my psyche. GOD BLESS ALL THOSE WHO HAD ANY EXPERIENCES dealing with this disaster.

My mom was scheduled to be on that flight on her return yearly trip to Mexico. She worked at an elementary school and would vacation there during the summer. She had to cancel her flight due to sudden illness. The void from the time we heard about the crash, until we learned of her well being was something else. Our prayers have gone out to all else hurt by that event.

My grandparents lived on the other side of the freeway where this happened, my grandpa took my dad’s bike to go see what happened and managed to get there before paramedics or really anyone showed up there. He described it as seeing the “worst of humanity.” People looting off of the dead for their personal belongings, Houses smashed and destroyed, body parts everywhere. This is a topic that is not brought up in my family because a lot of friends that my family knew where gone. Even I don’t like to talk about it and I wasn’t even there. We saw two massive fireballs, one right after the other, followed by the biggest, thickest cloud of black smoke I've ever seen in person. We had no idea what was going on, just that a bunch of homes were suddenly on fire. The freeway was packed, as it always was at that point in time. We just wanted to get the heck away, not knowing what else was going to explode. The fire was SO intense, all of those houses lit up so fast. We didn't find out until we got home and turned on the TV that a plane had crashed.

Target fixation played a big role in this accident. The DC-9 crew were running their checklists, checking their instruments, listening to ATC and probably weren't paying any attention to what was going on outside their window. The Cherokee pilot was quite clearly lost and was fixated in determining where he was, he was probably so fixated on trying to find a landmark that he was not even looking in the right direction. The controller became so fixated on the violator that he did spot that he never noticed the other one. And at the speeds modern aircraft do, the odds are against you spotting a potential collision before it's too late even if you are paying attention to the view outside of the window.

I grew up in Cerritos only a few blocks away. That morning, my little sister ran around the house trying to wake everyone up saying she saw a giant bird fall from the sky and made a big boom. We got up and looked out the window to see the billowing smoke column ride up into the sky. It was in the direction of our relatives’ house, luckily they answered the phone and were fine. We used to trick or treat in that neighborhood every year before the crash. It was heartbreaking to see the aftermath when our parents drove by after the roads reopened. I later learned that some classmates were on that flight. RIP to all the lost souls.

I heard this tragedy from my mom lived in this city, who had a girl friend whose house was one of the hit by airplane. That morning the friend suddenly felt so uneasy, had a strange feeling to leave the house. So the whole family went out had a short trip. When they came back, the house was Totally damaged with all debris everywhere, however the porcelain Goddess ( I think Buda ?) they worshiped every day was standing high on a broken platform. She is the ONLY thing intact in ONE piece there, while the refrigerator fell on her side. That was a real interesting story, and made me think there is/are someone up there !

So crazy. I can remember it like it was yesterday. I lived by Brookhaven Park, I got grounded that weekend and I was sent across the street and all I remember was hearing this loud boom looking up seeing the planes go down, and running up and down the hill I go, once at the bottom I can’t believe what I’m seeing all the destruction everywhere, everything on fire, people burning, cars on there side, your yelling and screaming for anyone to hear you looking to see anything your eyes burning from the smoke your gagging from the smell. Crying from what you’re seeing. It was one of the worst things my 17 year old self could handle and all I could do was pray.

Until that day, things like this only happened far away to strangers. I went to Cerritos College, was a city hall intern, and knew the area well. I lived a mile from that street and only moved away the year before. Surreal. Weirdly, in 2019 videos about the event or residents were nearly nonexistent. Odd and sad . . like it was forgotten about. Only an affected resident's channel with a collection of fascinating VHS videos showing his family & neighbors in '86, now gone. On 7/6/24 Mayday posted this old episode from 2006 and the views are through the roof. Crazy that nearly _FORTY YEARS_ have passed.

I was 11 years old on this day and my Uncle was in town from Boston my Dad was a Pilot out of Long Beach. My Uncle was on a exploratory flight at Long Beach Airport to see if he would like to learn to become a Pilot. So the flight was over and we were driving back to the house we lived not far from Cerritos and we saw a Black cloud just east of us so they had me turn the Scanner on and we heard the tower and a plane confirm a large looked to be a DC9 went down as we pulled in the area. We got out of the car and walked a few houses there was a cylinder head stuck in the front yard of a house and a guy was standing there and I think he said one also or parts came through the roof of his house. At that moment Fire trucks were pulling up and a Police officer told everyone to not touch it. we walked a few more houses around the corner and every thing was on fire and I remember a lady that was screaming and someone came over to her. I was told to get over here from my Father and I didn't realize I was a house or two from him and my Uncle I remember the smell. I don't Remember a lot of body parts but that could just be a way I coped with it. My dad feels bad that we went to this even today it something that we don't talk about. I seen some bad thinks being A truck Driver for over 10 years and a Railroader for over 13 years but that day in Cerritos was a mess.

Aero Mexico has always had a history of airline accidents. On 1979/1980 I was going to Mexico City on a business trip and flew Aero Mexico and had a safe trip. Upon landing, my friend asked me why I flew with this Airline? He said they have had several accidents and I could have been killed during a flight. I felt safe so I just responded with, "when God chooses to take me home, he's not going ask me which Airline I want to die in". There have been so many errors made by pilots and tower controllers for decades. It's sad that these things happen.😢😢
