Actually you can't reformat or do anything with the drive, the pass is required to access the drive as it's stored inside a chip inside the drive, so you'll still be prompted to enter a pass to reformat it (when you connect the drive)

However the encryption key is stored on the device by default which enables special made software to find the key and just decrypt the whole drive. You can store it on another device such as a USB thumb drive, but then you need to have that USB connected every time you try to access the drive.

This is left out but the reason you would use a self encrypting drive it's much faster then using something like true crypt, to encrypt your files. This is due to the fact that it's built into the physical machine.

This video is wrong, at least for Samsung self-encrypting SSD drives. The data on the drive is ALWAYS encrypted by an internal AES-256 key whether you set the HDD password or not. All the password does is allow the drive to access the key from its secure storage. This is why you can happily change (or even remove) the password without having to re-encrypt the entire drive - the key is not a function of the password. When you sell or dispose of the drive, you simply force the drive to change the key which renders the existing data useless.

I spent the extra money and bought windows 10 pro (instead Home edition) purely because it has Bitlocker, then I found out I don’t have a TPM on my laptop so I can’t use it anyway, then after loading on lots of data onto my Samsung 850 pro, I find that the ssd itself has hardware level encryption which when combine with VeraCrypt is the best option of all, but the drive gets wiped when it’s enabled...why the hell isnt the encryption process default on the damn Samsung ssd! Is it supposed to be a secret or something...😤 the engineering dept needs to communicate with the marketing debt

If you assume: Every person on the planet owns 10 computers. There are about 7 billion people on the planet. Each of these computers can test about1 billion key combinations per second. On average, you can crack the key after testing 50% of the possibilities. Then the earth's population can crack one encryption key in 77,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 years!

But does it means you have to enter the password every time you boot? And does it even protect your data from someone who hack in your PC? Personally I encrypted my drives using Bitlocker, on Windows 7 Ultimate, according to the specs it uses by default AES 128 but is configurable to 256. Since the decrypt key is on a USB key I don't have to remember the massively long password and as long as no one steal my USB drive(which is on my keychain, alway on me) no one should have access to my data.

Not everyone even uses encryption and for those who do, it's usually just easier to get hold of the password. That is and always will be the weak spot in this type of encryption. Brute force takes lots of computing power and time, so that's usually just a waste of resources and there is an easier way. You will never get 100% safety, but the encryption is pretty good, you'll just have to keep your password safe and your computer free from keyloggers.

i use an old windows 98 key that i happen to have memorized for secure passwords. but for the most part i don't use anything that i am particularly worried about people getting into, so my normal passwords are pretty simple and would likely be easy to crack. but i think a 25 character password would be pretty difficult to crack even though it doesn't contain any special characters. although a cool thing you can do is add an extended ascii char to your password like ž or •. most don't know how.

how to make a password that is secure and suitable easy to remember: generate a cryptographically random 3-10 letter string and use it to create backronym. worst case scenario you have 26 to the 3rd-10th power, but realistically it's unbreakable..... and defeat password reuse with an encrypted password database.
