You are correct, your facing does not need to be cut on the bias when you're using stretch knits. However, I've always cut them perpendicular to the selvage.

You weren't kidding about the gathering/ruffles making it hard to stitch together the cuff and the sleeve. This is the first project I've ever sewn (because I was like how hard could it be?) and woof. It was rough. I kept rewinding this video to watch how you did it!

The pattern has the exact requirements for fabric based on the size you are making. I suggest looking up the pattern if you would like to know how much is needed to make this shirt.
