@@Zorro9129 Good comment! Yes, unfortunately you are right and they don't even know that there is a big difference between German Nazism and European fascism. Which you surely know Fascism is not the same as German Nazism! Nazis was a German special way of fascism! With Nazism, the Germans have developed an ideology that completely contradicts the Enlightenment and made it their state doctrine. A complete break of civilization! Such degree of barbarism has never happened in human history! That was unique in human history. The main difference between European fascism and German Nazism is that the Nazism had an unprecedented and unique drastic nature and ruthlessness. So in summary a far greater degree of radicality. My grandfather was drafted by the Ustaše youth around a month before the fall of the Independent State of Croatia. As in the story in the video, he greeted the recruiters with the good old 'Dobar dan' or 'Good day' for you non-Balkaners. They immediately started yelling and sent him out to go back in and greet them 'properly' this time (the Hitler salute and an enthusiastic Za dom spremni!). My grandfather, deeply insulted by this act, left the building but instead of returning and greeting the Ustaše on their terms, just went home. By doing that, he avoided the recruitment into the Ustaše and therefore survived the trials and purges after the war. TL;DR: Through merrit of being a sassy bitch, my grandfather enabled all of you to read this comment today.

I have just realized that Nazi swastika as a symbol matches contemporary 'simplified logo' standards: - It's created with exactly 3 leading colors, repeated numerously across nazi symbolism. - It has a lot of contrast even tough it has no details (for default symbol). Objects assigned with the symbol can be very easily created (including virtual e.g. vector graphic), but there is still some space saved for customization and interpretation. - The symbol is also point-symmetrical and 4 axis-symmetrical making it good to look from multiple angles and recognizable from long distance. - The symbol itself (before Nazi) had ALMOST no meaning (in Europe), so it doesn't conflict culturally. Concluding, if Nazis hadn't used it, it would be a good candidate for some corporate logo.

I think that the Nazis themselves called it "the German greeting/salute", and it was ripped off from Mussolini, who I believe called it "the Roman salute". Americans once had the "Bellamy salute" which is oddly similar and was said with the Pledge of Allegiance. Either way, with the exception of Volkish Nationalism and antisemitism, most of Nazism's political and economic ideas were just ripped off of Mussolini and Italian fascist thought.

From the Roman Republic it was meant to be a showing of allegiance to the republic so it they took the inspiration from it. In the practice, it's also a method of propaganda called "Gleichschaltung", I was taught about this in history class in Germany so it's hard to find an equivalent in English. It, alongs with many mandatory social clubs an group that the Nazi party created, is a way for the Nazi to insert themselves into the everyday life of the German people. It's there to get people familiarized with the regime, eventually making people feel like it's an essential part of their lives or in another word, making them an inseparable part of being German.

Fascists love to talk about tradition and culture, but in practice they are the antithesis to these things. Fascists universally have strong hatred towards their own people and their own culture, viewing it as "degenerate" and needing drastic social engineering and often even eugenics to "correct" it. As with Germany, they sought to abolish many German traditions and cultural norms and replace them with idealized versions of what they thought Germans _ought_ to be rather than what Germans _were,_ such as replacing traditional German greetings with the salute. As you pointed out, people pledged their allegiance to the state, not to Germany. Fascism really is not even "ultranationalism" because they do not love the nation but despise it on a deep level and want to drastically change it in a fundamental way and are not reluctant to push people of their own nation into gas chambers to accomplish it. There has never been a fascist who did not hate his own people and his own culture and desperately want to see its destruction. It's a viscerally self-hating ideology that only ends in destruction of the nation it takes hold of.

I wonder if a generalised sense of guilt in recent times has caused the uptick in fascistic ideals. People feeling like they absolutely loathe their nation because of material conditions, a rising awareness of the problems of especially European history like colonialism and whatnot, and all manner of things besides, so just… instead create this hyper-idealised version of what they believe it *ought* to be, and then impose that. Which sounds contradictory to the very definite rise in fascism being from angry white guys who feel like they don’t have “what’s owed to them” because of society taking steps toward social (though most definitely not economic) equality, but both those things can be true. Realising it’s not owed to you, what you have being something tainted, and just… violently rejecting both those assertions in the most destructive way possible. My friends tell me I suffer from a loathing of my own nation and people, so I guess I think about this stuff to make sure I keep away from any fascistic ideals. Good comment, it’s another aspect of how people fall to fascism to guard against on a personal level.

@@legateelizabeth The problem is fascists equate the state and the economic system with "the nation and people". I want to change the state and the economic system. For the most part, with maybe some exceptions depending on the person, I have nothing wrong with my neighbor's cultural traditions, or religious beliefs, or whatever. It's not my neighbor I despise but the _system_ we live under. Fascists despise their neighbor rather than empathizing with them against the system that oppresses us both, but right-wingers have managed to flip the rhetoric on its head so that empathizing with your neighbor and despising the system that oppresses you both makes you the "self-hating" one.

You are correct, Hitler was inspired by Mussolinis fascists, but the Hitler salute was actually an American gesture towards their flag. The Bellamy salute was devised in the 1850's and it was only after WW2 that Americans completely abandoned their belamy salute for the currently familiar American "hand on heart" when addressing their flag. Barely any imagery has survived of Americans doing their belamy salute. Hitler was inspired by American Eugenics as well.
@warprecautions631
@warprecautions631 Жыл бұрын
No, Hitler wasn't influenced by the Bellamy salute, and the salute existed long before Americans adopted the Bellamy salute. It also became popular in 20th-century Europe following D'Annuzio's siege of Fiume. Hitler's reasoning for adopting the salute: "I made it the salute of the Party long after the Duce had adopted it. I'd read the description of the sitting of the Diet of Worms, in the course of which Luther was greeted with the German salute. It was to show him that he was not being confronted with arms, but with peaceful intentions. In the days of Frederick the Great, people still saluted with their hats, with pompous gestures. In the Middle Ages the serfs humbly doffed their bonnets, whilst the noblemen gave the German salute. It was in the Ratskeller at Bremen, about the year 1921, that I first saw this style of salute. It must be regarded as a survival of an ancient custom, which originally signified: "See, I have no weapon in my hand!" I introduced the salute into the Party at our first meeting in Weimar. The SS at once gave it a soldierly style. It's from that moment that our opponents honored us with the epithet "dogs of Fascists".

The intro slaps hard. Concerning the absurdity of inserting the salute into every social situation: my great grandfather was a dean at a university and he had to open and close every meeting and lecture with the nazi salute. He changed it to „heilt Hitler“ which translates to „heal Hitler“ which infuriated the president of the University and he was let go. It was so important to them that my great grandmother feared they would get a visit from the SS. They had to keep my great grandfather around though because he was important to them as a surgeon.

Long live love!" to remark the pacifist intentions of the the Regency. - Hitler, as usual, fucked everything up with pure bullshit and make-believe mysticism.

I’ve just found your channel and have seen the two nazi themed parts. I like your content, your thoughts and especially mutually shared disgust of nazis, by extension fascism, about which Ive been obsessed from early age on. However. There are several shortcuts on which you build your point which I think are key to avoid and which might allow one to understand the complexity of the matter. There is no time to go through them all so just to name a few from my (subjective) POV: First of all, I very very much dislike comparing the past with the present. It rhymes, not repeats. But the everyday reality of the Weimar Republic was incomparable to anything we live in today. Actual hunger, poverty, brutal unemployment and nation wide shame were imposed on heterogeneous, newly created state by foreign countries. Which brings me to your point on degradation of morality in your conclusion. As stated above, push comes to shovel, when you can’t bring food on your plate, little you care about some abstract concept of morality. This is not applicable for everyone, some don’t fall this low you might say. And you would be right. The favorite line about even nazis winning democratically is laughable. There were four elections in the period of two years (!), heavily influenced, and they still won them in low 30%’s of counted votes, which wouldn’t hold against coalition the left. Nsdap has basically forced itself upon a state officials who, unconstitutionally, picked them as they were not threatening elites contrary to the communists back then. The vast majority of the public which disagreed with nazis seizing power did not really have a choice. This is coming from someone who sees fascists around every corner. Thanks for your vids, kamarade.

Social Systems are just that: Systems. Small parts can have larger effects on the overall machine, whether your machine is made out of gears and belts or social relationships between people and society at large. When most interactions in said systems begin with a greeting it is then noteworthy that the foundation for nearly every interaction will then set the tone for that interaction. In Nazi Germany this salute meant that you were either supportive of the nazis, or were afraid enough that you wanted to look like you were. This being reinforced in literally every social interaction they had means that people will be terrified of the social force that the nazis can look like they project, even if only subconsciously. For the author, a suggestion on the aesthetic presentation of the video: While I think your message is overall good, consider that under the right context your opening is indistinguishable from actual pro-nazi media. It is the kind of thing I'd genuinely see as a red flag if I had just met/saw you, and more importantly I worry that were for some reason this to become popular in nazi circles this could help them up their obfuscation game. As such, I'd recommend doing something to make it more abrasive, aesthetically speaking, towards such groups. Sadly, I have no ideas on how to do that while remaining consistent with your more general aesthetic, other than maybe using more clips from Inglorious Bastards or similar media?

As an Indian loyalty and oath of allegiance, to a human is unacceptable idea. The oath of loyalty could only be to the nation not the leader. However I reckon there is a practical problem here, the nation doesn't speak or ascribe what constitutes, loyalty to the nation is a personal idea. German by swearing allegiance to Hitler, explicitly told the loyal behavior of the nation is what Hitler ascribes not every decentralized idea of masses.

While this video makes some good points, I have some addenda or corrections I feel necessary: 1. Discussing the youth organisations: While it is true, that HJ and BdM had a near 100% conscription rate as enlistment became compulsory, participation is another story. Since the opening of the archives, historians found that in many places in the countryside and even in some city districts the local leaders had a hard time getting their members to actually show up. 2. 'Heil' is not used on its own as a greeting in Germany anymore (at least not beyond right wingers). And the 'Heil' used by specific sports might look the same, but is of different origin: the 'Heil' of the nazis was corrupted from a translation of the latin 'ave' as in 'Ave caesar!' - 'Heil Cäsar!' - 'Hail Caesar!'. Through older literary text, we can find examples of that phrase in German, where a 'dir' followed the 'Heil' - either added in or replacing the name of the adressee. That 'dir' is you as an indirect object. So that 'Heil' is short for 'Heil sei dir' - 'May you be well/I wish you to be well' The still common greeting within some sports are however grammatically different. When Fishermen say 'Petri Heil', 'Petri' is latin - a common way of refering to biblical characters in Germany. But since latin declines even its names, we can say that Peter is here in the genitive singular form as a possessive object. So 'Petri Heil' means '[St.] Peter's blessing', and the hunter's 'Waidmanns Heil' - 'Hunter's blessing'. Skiers usually don't hail each other anymore.

A brilliant analysis, as usual. One might also ad the aesthetically pleasing alliteration of the double-h at the beginning of the words. And also its potential to be used - in variations - in mass rituals: Combining it with "Sieg" (victory), as part of an interaction with the crowd: one person shouts the "Sieg", the crowd responses with "heil". Or the crowd simply shouted only the "heil" in a rhythm, like at a rock concert. A truly scary way to induce a sense of belonging that eliminated the individual (and the responsibility of an ethical human being with it). - Very similar to what religion used to do. Philosopher Eric Voegelin coined the term of "political religion" for fascism and socialism, it seems fitting. ... The old socialist systems used a similar method of creating a sense of belonging to a "greater" power. As soviet pioneers we had a ritual of being asked "are you ready?" (to fight for the case of socialism) -- and we had to respond with a shouted "vsegda gotov" / всегда готов / "always ready", while making the pioneer salute. -- In its structure it was the same as the nazi salute, only not as prominent in everyday life... I think it's very important to point out these historical similarities ... and at the same time not to lose sight of what a socialist idea might actually be today. You are doing a fantastic job in this case; keep up the great work!

Cant understand why since we won ww1, unlikely the germans... 🤔 Maybe you have to ask them why. Or the austrians. Or the russians. Or the turks. Of course, I cant pretend that you goats can understand that history is a thing, while propaganda is another. Its better leave these things where they are and dont upset the animals from sleeping. 🤗🤭
