I love that Atraxa died the way that she did. It was satisfying to see the people that she overlooked as mere ants cause her demise. In the end it was her own arrogance and selfrighteousness that killer. She literally was not paying attention to them or her surroundings. Hence the plan when off beautifully.

Once you get past the arrogance of “this villain needed X sort of death” you do realize each Praetor and Atraxa die in a way inverse to their values. Sheoldred’s believed herself clever and her schemes and double play finally end with her being beheaded for Norn’s enjoyment, just as hundreds or thousands died in the arena for hers. Urabrask believed himself separated from the rest of Phyrexia and in death was split into four (one for each of the factions he “betrayed”) and his parts to be used for Norn’s Phyrexia. Vorinclex believed himself the Apex predator, best of the best, only to be killed by a nameless random soldier. Jin-Gitaxias felt that the natural world was beneath him, to the point he despised how messy and hungry green phyrexia always was, and he died just being food. Norn believed herself the Mother of Machines, and she was undone by the multiverse itself and finally ended by Karn, the true creator of Argentum, Mirrodin, and New Phyrexia.

Part of me wants to think Elesh Norn sent Atraxa to her death. She knew that plane defeated the Phyrexians before and we saw a hint of nervousness when she told Atraxa to go to Capenna. Norn saw her as a threat to her regime.

Normally I would be more bothered by the ending, but we had an entire chapter dedicated to Atraxa losing her self control and destroying a museum because of the halo affecting her mind. Plus it does make sense that she leaves the average citizens to be taken care of by the average phyraxian, her goal was to found Giada not be a front line lackey

Well Atraxa isn’t completely out of the story just yet, we still have Ixhel. A son who is definitely going to become a megalomaniac, and is definitely one of the characters I can see, still being functional, even with new phyrexia out. I can see him trying to remake Atraxa (in a fittingly horridly cruel fashion) just to get his mothers approval

Thank you for reading this for us Seiben! Because of how disappointed I am with this set, I plan to make a headcanon that's a much better ending, namely with the Praetors not being wrecked in such underwhelming ways. It's frustrating to see villains who were hyped for almost 15 years or so get destroyed by a random warrior, or having the big bad's right hand be crushed by a building. Just such a shame to have such a cool build up over all this time to have it mostly disappointingly ruined by the last two sets which were supposed to be the climax

100% agree. I really liked the Praetors, New Phyrexia was so cool, setup back when they had time to write characters properly. It'd have been cool to see each praetor take over a plane (Vorinclex head of Ikoria? Gin Gitaxias of Kaladesh?) And seeing the planes warped by their ideologies. They were dismissed as if they were nothing: MtG seems to be good at establishing threats, but terrible at resolving them.

@@mrknarf4438 Very true, seeing the Praetors ruling certain planes would be personal for the Planeswalkers as well, eg: Kaladesh would be devastating for Chandra, we would have weight to these actions seeing whole planes destroyed by the Phyrexians' power would show what's at stake and establish the idea that "Oh shoot, the Phyrexians have vastly improved their armies and respective factions in preparation over this massive gap in time"

I'd like to think Elesh Norn sent Atraxa to New Capenna because of her fear of an Angel's power and what could be more powerful than a phyrexian angel such as Atraxa? How appropriate would it be that the plane where angels had defeated the phyrexians before would fall to an angel made by phyrexians, in Elesh Norn's mind. This ending doesn't bother me at all. I wish one of the more powerful angels or an entire flight be the one's to take Atraxa down but having the peoples of New Capenna desperately bring her down is honestly satisfying. The fact they reversed the invasion trees branch and used the portal to bring the fight to New Phyrexia? Balls. You guys rock!

@@xlmao I didn't say I like how easily new phyrexia was defeated on every plane. Some battles I liked, some I didn't. I didn't like that atraxa was so easily dispatched for example. I don't like how they set up New Phyrexia as this huge threat and then they don't show a single world that gets completely wrecked. But in terms of foreshadowing, in all rules of storytelling, the angels and Zhalfir make a lot of sense. You might not like it but it was still set up very early (heck, Zhalfir was preparing for the Phyrexian invasion sealed away in its bubble since how many real-world years ago?) so it's not a Deux ex machina moment. I am tired of all you people that don't know much about story structure and writing shouting phrases you read in a movie review section somewhere without knowing if they apply here. It was set up properly and made sense in-universe. Could and should there have been bigger consequences altogether? Could the writing have been better with bigger consequences, not just single individuals getting compleated? Definitely. But those two examples, Zhalfir and the Angels, it made sense. Many people where just mad that Emrakul didn't emerge. That wouldn't have made sense for the writers. You don't just sprinkle in an eldrazi titan. That's its own multiverse -spanning event that deserves similar build-up and card sets as the New Phyrexia story

@@cheesy_87 that's a very good response. I actually agree with almost everything you wrote. I also didn't want the return of Emrakul or Bolas (let them be their own thing). And Zhalfir coming back was a highlight in my opinion (although, let's face, the Marvel paralels are screaming at our face). My problem with the ending is the Angels of New Capenna. Why? To put it simply...NC was nothing until 2022. There were no mentions of that in flavor text, in lore, in nothing. It's a plane the visited only once, and the story there was very superficial (we were just following Elspeth and Giada). It just doesn't sit well with me that this "newbie" plane would have the perfect counter to a problem that has been brewing since the Mirrodin-block. It felt rushed. What was the point of Karn's sylex, and the Gatewatch attack team? Everyone could have stayed home, because their actions didn't amount to anything (the Angels were returning on their own). Hell, the planeswalkers might have even done more damage, because they gave Nissa to the phyrexians and she was the one responsible for "fine tuning" the branchs of Realmbreaker. Chandra and Wrenn were the only ones who did something useful. Could they have written the story to make Archangel Elspeth as being the responsible for waking up the Angels? That would at least justify the Gatewatch attack, because Elspeth needed to die, to be reborn, to bring the angels. I could buy that story. Anyway, I thought your comment deserved a more elaborated response.

I would just like to point out that WOTC and Hasbro design all the cards, mechanics, and story for each set over a year in advance. Josh lee kwai proved this by having a copy of elesh norn, mother of machines for game knights a whole year before the release of AWBO. They have over a year to write a somewhat compelling story in most cases. In this case, they’ve had at least 3 years to design a compelling ending to the threat of phyrexia leading to this block, and this is the dogwater they gave us with all that time, A rushed mess and all those extremely threatening villains are reduced to nothing but minor obstacles for the heros. There’s been no real cost to this story, with the only expection being the wasted potential of what could have been a complete change to the somewhat stale MTG universe as we knew it in a positive way. Dominaria should have fallen to sheoldred, elesh norn should have ruled new phyrexia, Jin should have taken kamigawa as his own, vorinclex should have been dropped on kaldheim to destroy the remaining heros he could find there, atraxa should have been left to continue sending her legions to new capenna to farm halo and urabrask should have been on the run giving us the only glimmer of hope at stopping the phyrexians if the heros found him. Ending March of the machines that way would have made all seem lost, giving the heros only one last chance to attempt to take them down in aftermath.

Honestly, idk how else they would've beaten Atraxa. She was likely more powerful than any other Phyrexian, in combat, including Norn. Remember, it wasn't just "a building" they dropped on her, it was AT LEAST an entire district of massive buildings AND she was weakened. Also, in my experience, this type of strategy is only used on threats they have no other means of dealing with Atraxa was too strong for the angels to fight, even with demonic help. And why would they ever accept the demon's help again... it went terribly, last time I would've preferred if Elspeth fought and killed Atraxa, as she's certainly strong enough. Or even having Atraxa be restored to an Angel. But I understand them nuking her instead There were only a few entities capable of dealing with Atraxa and none of them were on New Capenna 🤷‍♂️

I don't know about you, Seiben, but I am starting to be very pissed off and annoyed at their story-telling format. Part of me knows even with 18 stories there's not enough room for everyone and everything to be fleshed out, and it's the problem. The fact they constantly restrain themselves, not allowing enough room to tell the story properly is truly annoying, because it is something they could change if they wanted to. I liked Rivera's style and she I feel like she did a good job at writing down the story, but the format is the problem. You do not kill off such an important character like Atraxa "offscreen" if there isn't a massive, fair reason behind it, you just do not. Any lambda, wannabe writer knows this

Whack. I was hoping that Atraxa would be ''changed'' (like her angel self would awaken, maybe even have a chat with Serra who converts her), kill the praetors except for Urabrask, ultimately take Phyrexia over and enter into a ''peaceful'' reign realizing that if they continued attempting to take over other planes of existence it would lead to their ultimate demise. Why do they have to be so one note? Even enemies change :P

I am very disappointed at how Atraxa was defeated. I wanted to see a huge battle like all 5 houses, the angels, and 1 or 2 planeswalker to take down Atraxa. With them constantly showering Atraxa with Halo to weaken her enough to kill her. Not crushed by a building

Facts. Halo and bad writing become the plot armor for this entire story. saw a meme making reference to Zhalfir and a certain marvel movie and i thought it was hilarious. War of the spark all over but maybe more disappointing. I mean literally. HEY LOOK OVER THERE. smh. Halo and apparently out of thin air a Planeswalker could be uncompleated even though in the story before this they said otherwise like none of this made any sense. I was ready for certain Planeswalkers to be dead for good. Hell they did it with Tamiyo but now suddenly we can just umcompleate things.

They clearly established in the narrative that the way they uncompleated Ajani was by replacing his spark (Karn had to lose his planeswalking) and killing Melira. It was a wholly impractical process and had great sacrifices. They even wondered aloud what the point of it was, since it wouldn't be practical for a whole population, and only applied to planeswalkers, whose compleation process is completely different from a regular person's (due to needing to preserve a spark, which is tied up in the soul, which is normally removed or harmed through the compleation process. To reiterate, we had FOUR planeswalker deaths, maybe five, all but one of which were compleated planeswalkers that died because nobody saw a way to save them (the other being Wrenn).

I have few questions. Are all Praetors dead? If they are all dead who will be the main villain? I assume all planeswalker who are completed will be cured and good again. To me that is lazy writing. Really can't belive they killed all of them or almost all.

New Capenna is not a city plane. It is supposed to be a protected city on a regular plane. The limited reach of the protection forced the city to grow vertically. How have the new Phyrexians entered the city that was able to keep Phyrexians out before? I thought that the trapped angels got free at the end of the New Capenna story. But when Atraxa showed up in this story, they were still statues.

Well... They have failed the war of the spark, what did we expect. Now phyrexia falls apart, like it is nothing. And I expected something much cooler then old phyrexia, that could surpass Yawgmoth. Ah well, mama is beaten, her angel is crushed. So anticlimactic.

Old phyrexia was much more powerful than new phyrexia. They went head to head with pre-mending planeswalkers. The new ones are essentially just Borg drones.

It genuinely feels as if Wotc handed the story to a bunch of Ryan Johnsons that cared next to nothing about lore, continuity, past, or present character development. They've done so many characters, both righteous and evil, so dirty in this long-term built-up short-lived arc alone that it feels like they genuinely tried to be disrespectful to their fanbase. Almost like they're saying, "We don't need long term, or old school fans that love the story, as long as we keep rotating in new players with face value catering, it won't matter how plotholed our story is. We'll still make money."

Jeez, this has to be the weakest chapter so far in the MOM storyline. Her dads compleation/having to kill him felt so hollow, likewise Atraxa's death just as cheap and hollow. If anything it felt like this author was just trying see how many time they could force the words "her wife" into the story. Even other stories that have centered around heterosexual or homosexual relationships haven't tried forcing it this hard!

I know it's an unpopular opinion, but the number of homosexual couples in the multiverse seems seriously disproportionate to the real world. I have no problem with the LGBTQ community, but it just takes away from the story and makes it feel less real. I'm all for diversity, but MTG has skewed a bit too far lately.
