I joined the AF as an engine mechanic! I took the DLAB after I retook the ASVAB once I got to my first duty station. I can’t wait to cross-train to Linguist

Graduate class "9-3-68B" Russian (AFSC 203X1-MA) Syracuse Univ., Syracuse, NY. Tough, Intense training, but well worth it. Good assignments, interesting duty, including last year at the NSA. Although been out for over fifty years, can actually remember some of the language.

When you go to MEPS, do you take the DLAB the same day as the ASVAB?
@InternetLoserTheTurkeyMan
@InternetLoserTheTurkeyMan 3 жыл бұрын
@Tyler Godby For the Air Force this doesn't apply, as of right now you have to get a minimum of 110 on the DLAB to qualify for Linguist jobs. Not sure about Army or other branches though.

I took the ASVAB the first day I went to MEPS, physical exam was the next day, and testing was the day after that.

@Tyler Godby Lucky ass. How far along are you in training? Or have you been in for a while? I'm still waiting in the Delayed Entry Program so I don't know my language yet. Praying for Russian, but who isn't

@Tyler Godby Man, that sounds convenient. From what I understand we don't get our language assignments until basic, I'm glad you got your pick though. I've always liked the language, culture and history of Russia but I can't say the same about some of the arab countries. I would take Arabic, Farsi or anything else for that matter with no contest though because I understand that national defense is more important than my own personal interests. I can't wait to get my contract though, I would love to be airborne. Good luck to you brother!

How difficult was the DLAB?
@InternetLoserTheTurkeyMan

It's difficult, but a lot more doable if you study and know what you're getting yourself into. The test would likely be near impossible if I hadn't had any prior knowledge of what it would entail. There are ebooks online that you can get from Amazon that lay out all of the rules and give examples for each, there is also a practice test in the one I used that lets you get a feel for what the test will be like if you have somebody read it to you. I had somebody read and record themselves narrating it so I could just repeat that to study. For the grammar translations it also helps to make up sentences to translate instead of relying just on practice tests, same with the syllables. Just get good at recognizing the stressed syllable(s) in a word or phrase and differentiating between them and that section isn't really that hard. The final section in a nutshell is being able to recognize similarities between pictures and the words to go along with them. You would get four pictures and a corresponding word for each one, then have to pick a word to go along with an unlabeled picture from four or five multiple choice questions. The picture translating was honestly the hardest part, but if you're good at recognizing patterns or just see how it works beforehand you'll do okay. The EDPT Electronic Data Processing Test was significantly harder in my experience.
