If you horde gold or mana you can end up with special events and get an extra affinity for materium and astral, they give you bonuses too.

You didn't say how to get the points themselves

You get them from learning new tomes

During character creation/selection. You will have some from the start. You will then gain more for researching tomes

You also get them from recruiting heroes. They come with their own affinity points

@@berniecat8756 I forgot about this, but I do believe they have to be governor of a city to get their affinity points.
