Who the better horse is proven on the track and there should be no doubt that Affirmed proved time and time again to be the better horse

Alydar wasn't stressed either, and only an Affirmed lover would say he wasn't challenged in any of the other races, only the Derby, when Alydar had a horrible trip, their first race and the Travers when Affirmed interfered could be said to be the case, the other 4 all went down to the wire, and in both of Alydar's wins he easily blew by Affirmed to win.

I have a lot of respect for these jockeys, I'm 6'4 & 240lbs & still feel small on the back of a big horse. When a horse doesn't listen & takes of running when you feel like walking it can be a bit nerve racking. To be that small on a huge & powerful animal going that fast has got to be a wonderful thrill...I'll stick to walking them!

Affirmed had pretty much owned Alydar during their 2yr.old season. But even when Affirmed beat Alydar in the 1978 Kentucky Derby, I remember thinking then that Alydar will get him in either the Preakness or Belmont Stakes? One of the two? Never quite worked out that way, though. When Affirmed was racing Alydar, I always describe him as the big deer being chased by the wolf. Every time the wolf got right on the big deer's heals, looking to take a bite, the big deer accelerated and found more!!

Cauthen was 18 when he rode Affirmed. He was Jockey and Athlete of the year in 1977 at 17. May have been greatest jockey ever but he grew to large.

Alydar is ranked # 27 in the same list. 26 starts: 14 wins, 9 seconds, 1 third and U.S $ 957.195,00 earned. Inducted to The National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame in 1990.

I don't see the classic rivalry in the Ali/Frazier, Lakers/Celtics, Yankees/Red Sox mold. What makes those rivalries so compelling is when it's all on the line and it's winner take all, you truly have no idea what the outcome is going to be. Seems to me that when the stakes were high and it was put up or shut up time, Affirmed was easy money every time. The only time Alydar really challenged him was The Belmont, and even then, Affirmed ran with utmost confidence and never once looked stressed.

Affirmed didn't own Alydar as a 2 year old, 4-2 is hardly ownership. And I have no doubt with better racing luck Alydar would have won a couple of those other races.

Affirmed was better than Alydar but later that year Settle Sleep put Affirmed in his place.
