I've been searching for anamorphic lenses that fit my run-and-gun shooting style, and now it might just be possible. Each lens in this Sirui Saturn kit (35mm, 50mm, 75mm) weighs less than 500g yet packs a 1.6x squeeze. Lots of test footage and my raw un-sponsored thoughts. Hey Brandon! Another fantastic video and review on the Sirui Saturn lens kit. The example footage you showcased really blew me away, and it's clear that these lenses are a great choice for solo shooters on a budget. I also loved how balanced and informative your review was, giving us a good idea of the pros and cons of these lenses. Keep up the inspiring work!

First of all, just watching the shorts in the beginning is both enjoyable and a kind of review in itself. Love it. Secondly, this review is so balanced that, even though it’s rather short, one easily gets an impression of its pros and cons. 😊👍

the best looking footage i have seen from your hardware. 1:2,6 is simply another Universe. some say its a 1,575 really with the 35mm sirui here.

Wonderful review Brandon. I have the saturn 35mm 1.6x and just pledged for the 75mm 1.6x. I love the look so far. I think in the very near future AI models and plugins will be able to "dirty up" and add a more customizable anamorphic bokeh/flare, as it is doing with cleaning up and upscaling vintage footage but in reverse. Who knows maybe you can shoot spherical 16mm and it will convert to anamorphic 75mm. Similar to the VHS filtering. As an amateur this is the perfect balance. Good image first.
@BrandonLiUnscripted

Well we can already add lens distortion, CA, vignetting, bloom. But altering the bokeh is way more complex because of the depth/parallax. I think we will need real vintage lenses for a long time. Which is a good thing, I think. The look won’t be as special once it can be replicated with software.

Brandon, love your footage so much! Especially the scene in HK at 2:12, 2:50, 3:12! Do you mind sharing the location for those shots? And are those 35mm? I am so tempted to get the 35mm now.

I suggest a telephoto converter auxiliary lens. I use a generic 2.2X converter and am getting pretty good results for my needs as a still shooter. Many video shooters seem to actually like IQ a fair bit below what I would even accept, so it may work quite well videos. Though it touts a 2.2X increase in telephoto effect, I see it as only increasing the telephoto power of my Sirui 1.33X anamorphic 75mm f1.8 to about to the equivalent of a 135mm. But that is still pretty good. Plus, you get to keep the original f-stop. There is a definite down side though. The minimum focal distance with be increased a good bit.

Thank you for this review. I really enjoy your work. What is your opinion of the Sirui lens with ND and black mist filters?
@BrandonLiUnscripted
@BrandonLiUnscripted 5 ай бұрын
I usually don’t do in-camera filtration (other than ND) because it’s inconvenient and causes image artifacts like internal reflection. I do my filtering in Resolve, which is almost as good.

Yes, but it'll look squeezed on the back of the monitor and in the viewfinder. Shooting a wide-screen TV will look like square. Cars are also close to square format. You need an external monitor to view them correctly, and the 1.6x factor means not every device can desqueeze them perfectly. Not even the FX3, FX30. You also have to manual focus, unless you have a follow focus rig. I have the 35mm, and it's very lightweight. You have to stretch the video in your editor to get the 1.6x superwide view.

Frankly speaking, if you crop top and bottom of the footage shot with cheap Samyang lens you will get same result... Very digital look, bokeh is just muddy and blurry. Some anamorphic light streaks - all these lens can provide you. Thank you for honest review, Brandon. Have bought many helpful tools after your reviews also as not bought things what will not suit me.

There’s no objective way to review a lens, so I just post the footage, give my thoughts and let you decide! Personally I think the kit is anamorphic-looking enough to justify its existence. We would all love a portable 2x kit with the Cooke lol but the laws of physics say otherwise.

We just cannot fall for a lens by looking at Brandon's work, because he can impress us with even a mobile phone camera. Having said that, T2.9 and manual focus are the downsides for me. Thank you for reviewing these lenses Brandon.
