the only thing that keeps film affordable for me is consistently using expired film, searching thrift stores for gear, film, etc, and developing my own film at home -broke college student budget. over the years I've managed to find really nice slr's, packs of unused expired film, an assortment of lenses by searching thrift stores extremely frequently but I may just be in a good area for it. sorry to hear about your life and financial troubles, wishing all the best and I'm so glad you haven't given up on your hobby

Yeah, thrift stores around here don’t ever have anything remotely good. Pretty sure the staff just grabs all the good stuff before the public ever sees it, or maybe it just goes right on eBay. It's my goal to take a look at more garage sales / estate sales. I haven't managed to make that happen yet though. Great idea about expired film. I’m seeing some pretty good deals on (the aforementioned) eBay.

I shoot the cheapest black and white film I can find, usually Fomapan, and develop at home and scan using my Canon 100D with a 20€ macro extension tube. The film costs around 5€ a roll and development costs somewhere around 1€ a roll, so I'd call that fairly affordable. Color film is a whole other story though as the cheapest rolls around here are about 15€ a pop.

Wow, nice, definitely going to give Fomapan a try.

The cheapest way to shoot film is get a bulk roll of 35mm BW film, an used bulk film loader.

True. I’ve looked into bulk loading a number of times. I always get turned off, looks like such a pain in the ass. Granted, it couldn’t be a bigger pain in the ass than developing at home. Though paying for development (that is paying somebody else in order to see my own photos) feels more egregious. Me personally, I don’t have the energy to do both. At some point all the extra misery would just crush my desire to go shoot film at all. I'm sure it's a very good option, though, for those with time and patience.
