New sub. Thank you for sharing. And I’m sorry for all of your hardship & heartaches. In a similar boat, on all fronts. Don’t overlook some of those lovely Chinese manual lenses. Many can be cheaper than adapting vintage, with much less risk of things like fungus/dust/oils/functionality issues…. I was missing my own involvement in my creativity & photography, as someone who started on an AE-1 Program. Lenses from companies like TTArtisan & 7Artisan have helped me to enjoy my mirrorless machine a lot more. I’m also very happy to adapt EF lenses, because I’ve found that many perform even better than they did on my DSLR. Sending well wishes to you, your wife, and your loved ones. Also hoping your channel grows swiftly enough to help ease some of your burdens. 🫂

This sucks! Having to part with, yes, a "thing", but a "thing" that has clearly brought *something " to your photography"life "... And, for freakin' *Medical Bills* ... I live in a country where I can keep doing photography, and dabbling in hobbies, even though I have had some rather "difficult" medical issues, because, in this country, and the two others that I have lived in, no one has to be bankrupted by medical bills... *We sll contribute* with taxes, and/or government insurance, to a pool of funds that provide medical care "to all, paid for by all* ; it's called a "society", where there is caring for everyone, by everyone, instead of a system of "I'm doing great, tough luck for you!" , and a system of "capitalism" that has gone so damned far that something like the ten "richest" people control more money than the total amount of 80% of the population, and who control the media, and medical costs... Sorry to go on and on, but your situation should just not be happening! You seem like a guy who should be happier, who shouldn't have to choose between his passport and his health.

Technical perfection kills creativity and aesthetic work. Look at all the iconic photographs from the past, they are by far technically not perfect by today's standards. But they stood the test of time! Whish you best of luck!

I recently sold my loved R5C and a fancy Hasselblad but replaced that with a GFX100ii for more professional work, however I also picked up a used Fuji X-Pro 1 and I will have to say I shoot that in JPEG only and it has brought be back to really enjoying photography from a non - professional standpoint. Really helps me just enjoy the moment, actually look for photography opportunities and not just shot anything random for the heck of it. I also in the past have enjoyed the 5D original, I've owned 2 of them, 5Dii and the 1Dsii with older EF lenses. Something about actually single point AF and recomposing, or just a few AF squares to choose from and actually having to make decisions based on available light, your subject and other factors is refreshing.

I don't think I could ever sell my EF 70-200L 2.8 IS II, thing cost me 1500.00. Was my first high dollar lens. I think the RF ones are way overpriced. I'd probably buy a used RF f4 one if it was under 1000.00 used, not sure I need it though.

I know sigma has some good older EF glass, i have a Sigma 105mm f/2.8 DG and it's pretty damn good. i know it's not too long of a focal length compared to the 200mm on your 70-200, but i find it can still get some pretty decent shots of things pretty far away. give it a look!! hope your situation improves, friend, peace and love❤

Thank you for stating the opposite mantra of the gated, money and attention heavy approach: We have permission to go out with old gear and less than perfect tools and make our art. No blessings from the consumerati necessary. Part of why I'm subscribed is that I do hope things will get better for you, and want to follow the updates as well as the philosophical asides. Keep moving.

Each day, as I work, I watch these videos; and following people tends to come along with that, as we form patterns that the algorithm then feeds more into of the same, or decides said pattern for us - anyway, so many on YT eventually then post, "ooh, I bought a Leica" or, "I bought..." basically one of all the things I cannot afford anymore since the world was forcibly changed in 2021-2 by socialist tyrants. Yesterday, I was shooting with my one and only lens (EF85) and trying hard to decide if I can afford a wider one and if so which and how much to spend. I believe most people would have forgotten that feeling. Forgotten that the decision can only be made once and that it has to count.

@@NicholasHornbrook $700 for lens that capable is a steal, there is nothing you can shoot with RF70-200 that you cant with EF one. We spoke about it some time ago but i think EF L glass is a steal in terms of value for money and lens character.

Bored with pristine clean images. Wow, did I hear that. But that said, I consider my editing 1/3 of my process. I like getting in there. I shoot with a lot of vintage lenses, which means by nature, I'm looking at imperfections. A modern lens just isn't my bag these days. Though who knows? I think I'll always want one or two modern and/or autofocus for when I don't want to sink into my focusing. But just not as often. I love how you praised the seamless nature, but still want to go after things you might make some changes around. "I reject nothing." Love it.
@NicholasHornbrook
@NicholasHornbrook 2 күн бұрын
Agreed @ChrisBrogan. Vintage lenses on mirrorless (and primarily more DSLR shooting, with era appropriate lenses) is my future, I think, but I am hoping to hang on to my favorite lens ever, which is a 50mm RF lens. I'm with you, having autofocus as an option, when needed, is nice. I may not be able to hang on to it, we'll see. Either way, I'll make it work. Nice. Got any good vintage lens recommendations?

If you're still feeling a bit sore about missing that telephoto perspective, a 300 f4 can be found around the same price point of 300-400. I have one and its honestly my favorite lens to shoot with, thats more of a sports perspective but its still worth looking at. And selfishly if you bought that I would be able to see more telephoto results in your videos which are almost always my favorite of yours.

Pretty good evaluation of the Canon 5D MKII. I bought one not long after they came out. Spent a lot of money for it, but I shot a ton of weddings with it and two Canon 7Ds, one of which was used by an assistant and one in the case as a backup. I wish now I had bought two MK IIs, but they cost a lot. I still have all of them and use them on occasion. I teach workshops and not long ago during a field day during a workshop I took the 5D MKII and a 7D with me. Students had mirrorless cameras. If you put their images alongside the ones from the 5D MKII and the 7D, which I shot, you could not tell the difference. Those cameras are every bit as good as the new mirrorless. I do studio headshots with a Canon EOS R, a 30-megapixel camera and the other day I was looking at a headshot I did and your statement of "good enough" came to mind. I shot with a Canon RF 85mm f/2 lens at f/8, and it was too sharp (in my judgement) for a portrait or headshot. Enough is enough. I can't imagine going beyond 30 mp. Enough is enough. Let's instead concentrate on becoming good photographers with whatever gear we have, regardless of whether it's a DSLR or Mirrorless and not get into the "I have to buy it because it's new and has more megapixels." mode. I like your video; you make a lot of sense. However, unlike you I do have a nostalgic attitude toward my 5DMK II and the 7Ds and will never sell them. When I retire, I'll put them on a shelf to remind me of when I was a photographer.
