You need better control of your Katana. You should be able to cut those rolls without slamming the blade off the chopping board with so much force that it bounces back at you. You're going to destroy the blade and cause it to lose an edge very quickly.

i bought an inexpensive Masahiro katana (model number is MA-002B) which was around $60. it is carbon steel and full tang. do you think it would stand up to light-medium cutting?
@hardgay7537
@hardgay7537 10 жыл бұрын
Depends on how you define "light-medium". Swords are for cutting people, which generally are not hard targets. Severing a limb generally requires suitable weighting (i.e. double-edge swords are usually not meant to cleave vertebrae). Personal strength and form are also important factors. I bought a $60 1045 Musha katana (knowing damn well it was a subpar, entry level, yet still functional weapon) and it was doing quite well. Until I slashed a green palm tree husk, which bent the blade at the tip a bit. Overall, I'd say the weapon, for the subpar piece it was, was somewhat better than the price tag. That also qualifies as a "torture test". That palm husk was quite strong, and I was certainly misusing the weapon. I bought it because if I do buy a proper katana (feel free to look up mine based on the specs I gave), I intend to pay over $250 easily. I just wanted to see what a katana felt like in the hand (the weight, the balance, how "bullshido" holds up, etc.). Also, Musha katanas have this fugly "China" engraving on the tsuba. I don't regret damaging the sword at all, therefore. If your sword can't cut water bottles, that's a problem. My Cold Steel Heavy duty sword cane laughs at maple branches. At $100, it's a fair blade. Thick, edge-and-a-half (not a false edge), quite sturdy - my only complaint is the rubber fittings on the grip are flimsy and I don't care for plastic grips, even if it is medical grade Grivory.

+Geoffrey Loicq He's right, you use a katana to slash objects. The only place the katana should make contact with is the target and nothing else. Also you're supposed to use the front portion of a katana because traditionally it is the only sharp part.
@peekaboo5925
@peekaboo5925 9 жыл бұрын
+Geoffrey Loicq katanas are mainly slash type weapons. chinese swords however were designed to stab/lunge. these are their main style of combat. granted u can stab/lunge/chop with a katana but that is not how u use it to its full potential. neither was it designed for that purpose.

Baby Inuyasha its not about velocity its called the center of percussion. And it's usually starts at about 1/4 - 1/3 down the blade for curved swords and closer to the centre on straight swords. Also it's a push/pull blade and not chopper.

Chiinnature, I was wondering if you could share some knowledge with me, this video was very interesting and only makes me wonder what a real Katana's destruction power was really like. Out of curiosity, say I bought that same sword you had just used in your video; 1. Does the sword deteriorate over time? 2. If I were to just use it for show and tell, but I still wanted to keep it in the condition I got it in, how often would I sharpen the sword? 3. Do you own a real Katana? :D

Hey man do u use renaissance wax on any of your swords. Ive just got some and would like to know your thoughts on ive been using singer oil on my swords for years its good stuff but the humidity where I live is ridiculous and have to re oil weekly so im hoping ren wax is good as I have bout 40 carbon steel blades and am looking for a long term substitute for the oil

Robert Bacon Mostly I use mineral oil only, silicone oil is way too easy to dry up. Yes wax will work if you don't cut anything only, LOL! TRy cutting something, your blade look like shit with the wax on.. hahaha!

Yer I actually noticed the shitty look when I was cuttin with one of my waks that had the wax on. I thought the blade was all scuffed up but was only the wax thank god. I might try some mineral oil next n see how long that takes to dry up. Thanks heaps for the info man and keep up the awesome vids :)
