For the majority of people on this planet. Any watch is a luxury. I have a 19 60s HMT Pilot I bought for £12. That watch was treasured before I had it. It's beautiful and keeps time perfectly. Made all in house in India. Citizen design mechanical hand wound movement. I have a 1939 Kirovskie watch. Bought for £70. These watches have history and I can afford them.

One mans Seiko may be another mans Omega. Buy the watches you like for your style. My personal style is Seiko Flightmaster,Tissot PRC 200; or Citizen Navihawk AT. I also have a cheap Indiglo because I’ve never seen another one like it and I love the way it looks and it cost $6 USD.
@13noman15 жыл бұрын
All things fall on a sigmoid shaped curve of quality vs cost (aka, law of diminishing returns). Any of these, even pre-owned, are waaay to the right on that curve, meaning you pay a lot more but quality gains are small. My Citizen, Seiko and Orient watches are up on the quality curve but manageable for many on the cost curve.
@classic-kool10 жыл бұрын
Rolex in precious metals are priced comparably to other luxury brands .... the 904L stainless steel is highly desired, and priced almost as high as a precious metal ... all my opinion, of course .. wear what you like!!
@marktuyet10 жыл бұрын
Chill out and buy anything you like unless you are spending thousands of dollars for a chronometer. I buy Vostok military watches on eBay from a guy in Florida. I like them, they fit my budget, I wear a different one everyday and never worry about them. If you are having fun , you are a successfully collector. If you are anxious about what you are buying and afraid to wear them because you might get a scratch , you are a failure at collecting. Not everything in life comes down to " how much is it worth " .
@rodrigovallades248010 жыл бұрын
I read all the posts and laughed my ass off. Very entertaining to say the least. The difference is clear in my mind: there are CONSUMERS and there are COLLECTORS. Consumers don't necessarily care about the inner workings or the history of what they are buying, whereas collectors do.
@marktuyet10 жыл бұрын
Rodrigo Vallades Magalhães exactly , and you can be both. I have a few old Rolex and Breitlings , but I love watches for different reasons . I have a Seiko high beat that I bought for the beauty and mechanics of the movement . I have an old citizens from the 70s that I enjoy because it reminds me of the watches I had when I WS young. Right now I am wearing an old Seiko 6160 that I love for the beautiful rich green dial with the orange sweep second hand . I will buy myself a new Seiko quartz soon too for their classic looks and fabulous quartz movement . collecting should be about whatever turns you on including my Vostok watches I buy on EBay from a guy in Florida . I like the fact they are mechanical and come in many dial designs . I am a consumer and collector and enjoy every watch I own . Enjoy !!!

marktuyet I agree. I have about 25-30 watches in my collection, and most are Accutrons. They're very accurate and the history behind it is awesome. Plus most of them costed under $100. The only downside I'd say is the repair/service costs. Luckily my friend knows someone in California who's been doing it for decades and charges less than $100 if parts aren't needed.
@Veneros10 жыл бұрын
mugen1237 if it costs 100 to service, but you said the watches are usually under 100 to buy? How does this work for you? I don't collect watches as I don't know much about it but I"ve accumulated a few pieces over time - digital g shock for obvious sports/rough wear, swatch for its cheap and stylish young look wheny ou feel lik no frills, and my more professional watch wear being a Maurice Lacroix Pontos entry level unit. Would be keen to know what the difference between the digital, quartz and mechanical movements are in terms of required servicing? Apart from battery changes for the first two, is it only mechanicals that need servicing, and if so how often? Got my Maurice Lacroix in around 2011 from memory? Maybe end of 2010.... Do you have to service it every yr,two,four, six? And what should you be aiming to do in a 'service' - since different jewelry stores and service stores offer various servicing, including pressure tests and what not to ensure it's waterproof after. How to not get conned and get the bare minimum one needs? Watch probably cost around $1500 AUD at the time...
@Sams9112 жыл бұрын
A luxury watch by it's definition isn't affordable... Vacheron Constantin is affordable because among the Holy Trinity of watch brands (them, Audemars Piguet and Patek Philippe) they are the leased hyped.. Rolex is a good "luxury" brand for the masses .. as it's mass produced.. there are also ultra-luxury options by VC, AP or PP.... or independents like FP Journe, Philippe Dufour, etc.. but you're not getting a "luxury" watch for $500-$5000... sorry, you're just getting a watch, maybe a "nice" watch at most.

One thing to remember about buying a used luxury watch is the cost of servicing the watch. That shouldn't stop anyone cause if you find certified jeweler you can trust its not a big issue. However I read an article where a man bought a GMT Rolex and took it to a jeweler to have a basic service done on it and he saved a lot of money, however 3-years later the watch stopped working. Well the jeweler he went to closed the doors ( out of business). So he found another jeweler, the new jeweler opened the case back on the Rolex GMT and found it had a miyota Japanese movement in it! Draw your own conclusion on this one.😱
@ikkexd118 жыл бұрын
well your just stupid if you get this done without knowing it. A miyota movement is battery powered and the indicator for seconds ticks instead of drags like a automatic/ handwound movement does...

Rolex may be over rated and not all models will appreciate in value over time, but my 1988 Rolex Oyster Perpetual Datejust, in stainless steel, with the standard plastic crystal is worth more today than it was new. It is accurate to 1 to 3 seconds a month--that's what I really care about. Ironically Rolex would replace the crystal w/ another plastic one and to put an after market sapphire one would actually reduce its value!

Rolex is just a marketing piece. Nothing special in the horology world other than saying "I don't know much about watches, so I went for a safe bet." I mean, it could be worse, it could be a quartz Tag Heuer.
@Gewehr_310 жыл бұрын
Nothing special in the horology world? Do you even know what you're talking about? Rolex made the first water resistant watch case. They make all of their movements in house and even their own steel. My sentiments exactly! It's also why they created and constantly advertise "COSC Certified". I like Grand Seiko a lot but they're Japanese and not Swiss so aren't allowed to be COSC certified, but they do have ISO (international) certification on their diver watches. I also like some German watches. I don't support companies or groups of companies who use such dirty tactics like the Swiss do, so I stopped buying Swiss.
@charlesbai63158 жыл бұрын
doesn't have to be swiss, but swiss movements are definitely better and have a way longer and reputable history, and the value of resell is definitely going to be higher as well. Japanese watch companies like Seiko and Orient produce quality movements, but it would still be best to avoid Chinese movements, since they do a lot of false advertising and stuff like that. Basically buy from a reputable brand, and the majority of them originate from swiss
@Optidorf8 жыл бұрын
As said: quality is secondary to consumer demand. Swiss watches have for more appeal to the big public than Japanese watches. Compare it with an Iphone and a Huawei. Personally, I enjoy my collection of watches and I enjoy timepiece collection as a hobby in general because I take pride in understanding the history and painstaking craftsmanship behind the movement. If you enjoy the look of your timepiece, who am I (or anyone else for that matter) to tell you otherwise because its maybe something that I wouldn't necessarily wear.

Really?? 90% off luxury watches? Maybe if they've been beaten to crap and aren't working. You're not getting a true luxury watch in anything remotely approaching excellent condition for 90% off. Someone should have checked that so-called expert's credentials.

I'm an insecure male. I need something that demonstrates my dominance and level of expendable income to other males, and more importantly, to sexually desirable females. In order to do this I will purchase an anachronistic device for an extravagant amount of money, when I could purchase a similar device that performs the same function, possibly even better, for a fraction of the cost. I will then justify this purchase appealing to the name recognition of the manufacturer and various mechanical features of my watch that increase its complexity while not increasing its functionality.

So buying a luxury watch "anachronistic device" is just to "demonstrates my dominance and level of expendable income to other males, and more importantly, to sexually desirable females" because of insecurities? Laughable at best. You should move to Detroit, it performs the same functions, possibly even better, for a fraction of the cost as the town you currently live in. If you actually knew anything about timepieces, you wouldn't make such large assumptions. Time accuracy, craftsmanship, and quality is what you get for an "extravagant amount of money". Stick to shopping at thrift shops and drinking PBR

Modern watches are about the name on the dial and a few questionable features used to justify an unconscionable price for what is really a very mundane object. If that truth offends you, maybe the Emperor should put his clothing back on.

Waltham1892 Who needs clothes when one is wearing a yellow gold Day-Date II or an over-priced, over-engineered, and over-obnoxious Deepsea Sea-dweller? The truth you suggest does not offend, it empowers. I have pacified populations and marginalized insurgents by way of helicopter air assaults and big fucking balls while wearing one of these anachronistic and extravagant objects of luxury despite some risk of personal injury or death -- I am not insecure. No, these watches are a real demonstration of dominance over other men as well as attractiveness when coupled with confidence while engaging an attractive woman. You may not like this reality, but it is a natural part of our condition as human beings where status symbols provoke envy, emulation, and desire in others. Ohhhh, the look on the faces of detractors (e.g., you) and the brightening in the eyes of game, makes life that much more pleasant.

Wade1865 Ah, someone who has drunk the Kool Aid. Hey, if you watch is the magic totem you need to slay dragons and win the princess, who am I to keep money in your pocket?

Anybody who is going to do any type of public speaking should invest the time to work out the little quirks and bad habits that are very distracting and off-putting for a listener. Some of these words and sounds are umm, you know, like umm ahh, you know very irritating and you know, causes us to like, focus on umm these ahh words which do not belong, instead of listening to the message or topic at hand.

If these "quirks" are so distracting to you, perhaps you should get checked for ADD

Actually, if you have ever been trained in public speaking or as a teacher, you would know that those types of "quirks" are one of the first things that are addressed and trained out of you. There are multiple reasons why this is so important. Some of those reasons are: - this bad habit shows that the speaker is nervous and insecure with his/her subject matter; - if students or an audience think that the speaker is unsure of the subject matter, they will doubt the veracity of what the speaker has tried to convey to them, therefore the class/speech/news report will be less than successful; - if the speaker is a news reporter, in front of the camera, having such bad habits will make the reporter look and sound very unprofessional, waste on air time and result in the reporter losing their job; and - when a teacher is using this type of crutch, to give himself/herself time to gather his/her thoughts, it diverts the student's attention and makes the students bored and restless, resulting in disturbances in class as the students who are bored and restless find something to occupy their minds. If such bad habits do not distract you from the subject matter, or irritate you, and one of these examples don't apply to you, then you are one of a very small minority.

Quality shmolity .........Fact is that any quartz watch is more precise and more durable then any automatic mechanical watch.I have Casio GD-101 watch already few years without having problems and without expencive service every 2-3 years!!! f@#k any of mechanical pieces....
@Kingnolybear5609 жыл бұрын
Because you look at a watch as a tool. I look at it as an art. The more complicated it is the more impressed I am with it. Complicated in house movements are not as accurate as Quartz but are one hundred times more impressive and beautiful to look at and own.

***** I do understand what you mean.You are right. I have few mechanical watches not highest class,but suits my pocket. Tissot,Pulsar,Dugena. This ones I don't even wear since quarts mechanism came on the market,but I keep it,as you say, just because appriciat it.
