My Carbon V SRK was carried 10 years in the infantry and that was 30 years ago. It still gets use and I would trust it with my life still.

Those mini srk-c were on sale for 40$ not long ago and I bought 3. Now that’s a great little knife. The master hunter is a favorite. And so is the San mai srk. They are all fantastic blades.

I have the GI Tonto and I think they've gone up a tad bit in price but when I got mine it was like under $27 and I've used the crap out of it and no problems...... It's a great camp knife

I have a brand new SRK. It is made in Taiwan. A magnet will stick all the way to the butt and all points in-between. I think it is a full tang. $38!

The tang runs the full length of the handle, its just not full thickness but like I said still plenty strong. It's a solid knife enjoy it!

Yes very functional design. It wasn't very difficult I think we used jasco premium paint and epoxy remover and then a little light sanding with 1500-2000 grit in some spots.

I never got to experience the Aus-8 SRK. I’ve had most of the other versions and leave them in vehicles. Sadly I always seem to give them away. The last one was a San Mai SRK I gave it to a buddy that was trying to prepare a fish meal for a group with his Gerber Strongarm. It was sad, yet hilarious...The San Mai version fit the sheath beautifully “no rattle” while the new Taiwan 3V version is a bit tight. The older Italian 3V blade was thinner and rattled, the handle also constantly came loose. Kinda miss the hollow ground San Mai. I’m seeing them now for just under $100...think I’m going to pick up another along with a few of the carbon steel versions so I quit giving away my good ones...lol

These are good blades for the money. I haven't got to try the 3v versions yet but will! It's always a good idea to have some more affordable blades to be able to use for loaners. When I used to carry folders I always carried a cheap one because people always knew I had a knife and would ask to barrow it then they'd use to pry out construction staples and snap the tip off a $500 dollar folder. I carry fixed blades now so don't have to worry about such things but still a good idea.

Nope it’s not a rat tail tang. It’s a hidden full tang. A rat tail tang looks like a tail kinda pointed. Then there is partial tang. If you look a Nepal kukuri many of them are rat tail. A hidden full tang the blade is hidden by the handle it’s still the full length and thickness unless they distal taper the tang for weight and balance. Knives were made with hidden tang because they have better balance and the handle reduced shock. Seems nowadays marketing has hidden the reasons for things. People only understand buss words. They don’t understand why things were done a certain way. A big way to see a difference hold a kukuri with a full tang then use a traditional. The traditional will be better balance and less shock also very easy to repair. I bought my first SRK when I was in the service. All the Ranger instructors had coldsteel knives. Back then in 1990 they were made in the USA. Great knife just the new model has a very delicate tip.

Thanks for the input. Perhaps the us made ones did not have the same tang that these have. If you were to cut the rubber handle off this one you would see a tang that looks like a popsicle stick. Full tang blades don't step down like that. There is inherent strength in a full tang blade that doesn't have this step down. The tang maintains the same profile as the scales, and although it may be contoured to match the handle profile it doesn't have any angles to introduce stress fractures. Hope that helps shine some light on the topic. You can also search" cold steel srk full tang images" and see where people have done x-rays, and removed their handles to expose the tang.

@@Bladeunion5716 nope that’s not true step down has nothing to do with the name. It’s still a hidden full tang.

I'd be okay with this if it was a full tang at 5 inches , other wise a mora companion / heavy duty will do.

i just love getting the coating off of these coated fixed blades. i get why EVERYONE does the coating but i really would rather not have it. it's one thing when you can get it off with paint stripper but stuff like DLC that you have to sand off is soooooo annoying

It may be nine years old, but doesn't look like it was used, no scratches, no marks. My AUS8 shows it use. Why have a knife if you're not going to use it....at least once.

This was a coated blade most of its life. During the finish removal process some sanding was required. I used a series of sandpaper up to 2000 grit which removed and polished the steel. I haven't used it much since then as I have other blades. I simply dug this one out for an affordable option for my viewers. Thanks for watching.

That's true but it's not in same same category. If they made it with a 6 inch blade for under 100 now we're talking. I linked in the description these srk can be had for less than $50 bucks which is real hard to beat. Thanks for watching.

@@Bladeunion5716 no you probably cannot beat it for the price. Also Ontario sp6 would be under same category. USA made and around 50-60$. Have both. Both are great.
