I loved the handle geometry and overall blade performance. The m390 seems to be an amazing steel for sure.

That is a sweet knife. It’s almost hard to believe that the edge retained itself as well as it did after all you did to it. Never seen anybody cut a circle and a piece of paper before but then again I’ve never seen a couple of cats like you to either! Keep them coming

I have this in magnacut. I did not even want to buy this knife but the M5 in 3V was sold out. I really wanted to buy another knife I really ‘needed’ and bought this one. It is now my favorite EDC knife, it is really good and you never have to sharpen it. Small enough to not scare the normies with your ‘Rambo knife’ , while still able to baton fire wood

So I drove an hour to The Bushcraft Store to pick up a BRK Bushcrafter but it was in CPM154 not the 3V I was anticipating, so I didn't get it. Now I am looking at this M4 and can't decide between it and an Enzo Trapper 95 Elmax Scandi. I prefer the look of the Enzo, and have a soft spot for the Scandi as well. This Lion Steel looks a bit tactical, but seems an excellent bush crafter and will be loads better at food prep.. The handle ergonomics seem much better also, and that edge retention is just fantastic! I teach kids basic bush craft and some mornings make 20 or 30 feather sticks, so less edge maintenance is the goal here! I just need to fall for the looks of the Lion Steel! Another great video - it might be 2 years old, but it's still relevant. Love the Virtuovoice 'No Problem' :)

A tip for pine needle tea, when water boils take it off the heat and put pine needles in (and put on lid if you have to keep the heat better). You get harmful substances when boiling it. And it tastes better when you do it like this! Nice knife btw! I think it seems very good for the price. That edge retention is amazing!

Don't put lemon in hot tea (proper tea, from tea leaves). It leeches out lead, the worst possible lead you can consume. I can't explain the chemistry, but I knew a pathologist (a guy who studies why people die), and he refused to ever put something acidic in his tea. Smart guy; I took his advice.
@neutronalchemist3241
@neutronalchemist3241 6 жыл бұрын
frenstcht It can happen if you put lemon when the leaves are still there, since, when the leaves are in infusion, fortunately the lead remains in the leaves. If you put lemon in the tea after the leaves have been removed, nothing happens. Obviously lemon can't add to the tea something that isn't already there, or in the lemon.

I buy January 2017 a lionsteel M4 form a good friend of mine. I love the knife, the size is nearly perfect for the most daily challenges. For my personal opinion it is not difficult to sharpen, 3-4 weeks ago the knife was falling down from 1.60 m to the ground and hit directly with the edge the stoneground. The result was 2-3 small chipped points. So I have to resharpening the knife. I used just a cheaper old 400 grind gräwe stone and an 1000/3000 k naniwa stone. Take less than 35 minutes, and it's like new. Can not understand why so many people think that m390 is difficult to sharpen. I buy at the same time a benchmade contego 810 with the cpm M4 steel blade. So I start to made a challenge between this bought knives. I cut nearly everything with this knifes from end of January until now. Used as kitchen knifes, outside, woodwork, carpenter...... every cutting job, day by day. For my personal opinion, the cpm M4 (64 HRC version) hold the cutting edge longer. But it is not so rust / stain resistant like m390. There are a lot different opinions about comparing this premium steel knifes. Both are excellent. I hope that you guys will do some day a review for a cpm M4 or M4 rex knife. I am still very impressed from this steel, I own a lot of expensive and good knives, but I like the lionsteel m4 and benchmade 810 by far most. You get a superb knive for less money if you buy the lionsteel, it is a fantastic one. Do some one have a bad experience with the lionsteel M4 ? Best regards to the DBK guys, your channel is unique

And m390 steel for £138 is just amazing. Btw I love how you use some very English words and phrases... like 'proper', 'bloody hell' and 'mate'. Got mine, just treated sheath twice with Huberd's shoe grease. SOOOO many made it seems thin like a spiderco folder. Not 1 of them even owned it or saw one in person, just pics. Stout for sure. Sheath design is ok, I like Bark River style better. IT will work NP.....for a while anyway...until it cuts up Grind was even-ish. Came sharp.Tip was slightly less sharp then the rest.Last 1/2 inch or so. Used my worksharp for a convex.Used the 8000 grit micromesh belt 50x or so per side(stopped counting) it is full mirror now. 20 DEG/side. it is SHARP now.Last 1/2 inch (tip) is the same as the rest now. Push cuts paper NP and shaves arm hair (pops)..not that I care about that stuff...but I did it anyway. My left to right side grind is close. I dont go crazy over this like some owners. ( say some insane vids and posts). Worksharp made it about perfect Knife is a bit heavier then I thought it would be, I am now 6'9 330...im not worried about 1-2 extra ounces, man up guys (me at a tiny 6'8 295 or so kzbin.info/www/bejne/inSoh4OQd7Kia5I). In general blade/handle is a bit bigger then expected. Not that I care ( I like the M1 shape/style a tad better..if it was 3.5-3.7 long)That said..I am fine as it is Scales dont line up 100% (some go crazy over this) it has no effect on use,no hotspots due to this.(scales are .1% larger then tang.) ****Being really REALLY picky (just a personal thing) I like the finger guard/stop and choil. SOOOO many knives do NOT have this and I this... its dumb on ANY knife. I feel safe and secure holding/using this,even in self defence. That said, I wish The choil was a bit deeper..perhaps 25-50% like a White River backpacker. As is, it is JUST enough for me..I mean just.To be clear it is NOT a problem . I have been cut by a few guard-choil-less knives b4 and wont ever own another. Bradford Guardian 3 comes to mind 3 stiches, 1 other bad cut, 4 others I know and countless on youtube and forums...he has a guardian 3.5 now thats MUCH better after I talked to the owner Brad 3 times and sent him pics and links of proper handle design...first gen scales also horrible( entire handle really) he has corrected all this as of now......anyway Brad is a VERY nice guy. REAL M390 with a solid heat treat. Great ergos. Decent sheath.Blade shape/size is right on. Overall I have to rate this for intended uses and some not intended a 10 /10. Really.(unless something stupid happens with the steel) The kicker....155 bucks ????????? Other well known MFG would charge 250-400+ for this knife as it is. * To the guy (if he ever reads this) : He said "Dude I dont own one but have seen pics.This is a chinesey,thin blade that will break in half the first use.It is cheap and thin like a Cold Steel.Pocket knife thin.I bet my wife that 99% of them break a tip in the first day of woods/hunting use. Not abuse,just normal use." *You are a 100% moron In closing : on the fence? Need a great EDC or hunting/camp/bushcraft... even kitchen knife..BUY THIS !!!! Semper Fi Gunny

The firesteel striker is located on the bottom of the knife… Notice how that is the only part on the knife that has sharp 90 degree edges. No Italian designer would round off an entire knife so every edge is perfectly smooth and leave that sharp like that without purpose 😄 It is very effective tbh.

It’s even as good as the Chris Reeves Nyala. Less expensive better steel and the handle fills the hand better. For the price it is in a class of its own. I edc this knife and sharpened it 2-3 months ago and wit a couple of sweeps on the strop block it’s back to razor sharp. By the way it’s very easy to sharpen with diamonds otherwise a little Tim consuming. Love your vids.

Greetings guys, could you post a tutorial on how you do your secondary convex edge? I would like to know more about that setup you have with the stones, and which stones you used for this M390 blade. Until now i only knew about sandpaper & mousepad for convex sharpening
@DutchBushcraftKnives
@DutchBushcraftKnives 7 жыл бұрын
Greetings!, I would not recommend a mousepad with sandpaper as the mousepad will easily make a knife too convex which decreases it's sharpness. Loosening up your wrists while sharpening creates a convex on your knife because you wont be able to do every stroke in the same angle as the previous. We are getting a lot of requests for a sharpening video so we will do one this winter when we don't have the chance of going to the woods for videos.
@kylestewart4444
@kylestewart4444 7 жыл бұрын
Bushcraft & Rex the most important thing is to gradually raise the angle as you move through the grits. TheApostleP has a great video on convex sharpening. As Martin said, try to keep your wrists fairly loose but you also need to take good care to make both sides as symmetrical as you can. It will never be perfect but too much asymmetry will result in poor, inconsistent cutting performance.

Every time I buy a knife for an intended use (bushcraft, EDC folder, etc), it's usually a month or two before my eyes start to wander at other models... Just to see what's out there 🙄. I got one of these years ago and have yet to care enough to even mildly consider replacing it. I've turned my back on carbon and high carbon steel knives in this style a long time ago, for my uses and needs there's nothing carbon steel offers that I need enough to overlook the drawbacks, mainly corrosion resistance and edge retention. The last one I had was an Esee 3. People seem to like it's edge retention, and maybe someone was distracted during the heat treat for my particular one, but I wasn't happy with it at all. The humidity here in New England can get pretty bad during summers, and corrosion seems to be a problem instantly here with carbon steels. Clearly these work well with fire steels, but even if they didn't it's not a major consideration for me. I haven't been in a situation where I absolutely need to use a knife with one anyways. The truth is that if I'm ina scenario where my lighters and spare matches I keep everywhere are gone, my fire rod has a cover with a built in scraper that's tethered to it, so if I don't have that odds are I don't have the steel either. If those come to be, needing a knife to start a fire is likely to be the least of my troubles.

I didn‘t regret my decision to skip this one. Why? Because they came up with a magnacut variant of the M4 for around 200€, which is a pretty phenomenal package.

Yes nice blade---- I've been looking at the M5 in G10 but its in Sleipner steel. I don't have any knives in this steel I don't think Molletta would put his name on it if its a poor steel there selling for $147 free shipping in the U.S. seems like a good deal

That's an incredible deal. I just got the M5 today in sleipner. I went totally militairy style on this one with a black coating, black G 10 and a black sheath. As expected the handle geometry is great. I'm very curious on how the steel will hold up.

Hi DBK, I just want to say that I really enjoy your videos. I want to get my own bushcraft knife but cant decide between Fallkniven F1 and this Lionsteel M4. Any advise? Please keep up with the videos, you guys are awesome. If you ever come to Southern California or Dallas, please let me know, Id like to buy you a beer!
@DutchBushcraftKnives

Thanks a lot! Both the f1 and the Lionsteel are great knives. The F1 has a better knife geometry in my opinion but the M4 uses a much better steel (harder to sharpen though). The handle geometry of the lionsteel is also better. The F1 is made to be completely care free. and the handle feels good in the winter. Maybe i'm making it even harder now but... good luck choosing! You'll be happy with both.

Hiya! "Oak" is a meaningless term, because white oak and red oak are very different from the perspective of a knife's edge. Specifically, the guy who sharpens our tools absolutely loves white oak because it contains a lot of silicates (IIRC), and when we work white oak, he gets a lot more sharpening work from us. Always specify the type of oak: white or red. Also, pine knots are about as hard as you're going to get for wood. They make for good testing.

Hey, I'm not sure about the english names but this was Quercus Robur (latin)
@frenstcht

Heya, the internet's best guess is that the white oak I'm referring to, Quercus alba, is exclusive to the eastern U.S. If you want to pay for shipping, I'll send some over for you to baton with. Okay, that's silly, but now I'm curious if there really is a difference. No matter. Keep up the good work. I actually bought this Lion Steel knife because of this video, which is bad for you, because that was your Patreon support money :-P

I always thought m390 was pretty brittle stuff, meant purely for cutting. But I see you guys beat on it and other steels that are considered more delicate..... Are steels like m390 only too delicate for hard work when put in a larger blade or what? Do I really need something like cpm3v in a small knife for hard use, or just in a larger blade?

Hi! I have a little problem. I dont know what grit its needed to hair shaving sharpness :( i have 1 very cheap unknown grit stone and 1 600/1200 aluminium oxide stone that i dont know if its water or oil. Used with water its so soft, the tip left big scratches. The lowest price of a 3000/8000 grit costs more than my both knives. 40€, but i want that razor sharp :((
@DutchBushcraftKnives
@DutchBushcraftKnives 7 жыл бұрын
+Adrian I. You should try a strop with bark river black and white compound. I you take the time to sharpen you can make a kknife shave a bit after 400 grit. If you would strop with the compound after 400 grit you'll be able to shave of hairs easily. The edge will not be as clean as with higher grits though
@adriani.3590
@adriani.3590 7 жыл бұрын
Dutch Bushcraft Knives Thank you for answer! I cant find Bark river in my country, so ill buy some 1-3 microns compound. I found that 2 microns=12-13k grit. Hope this will make scary sharp edge. Thank you!!

Great show guys.. just recently discovered your show and must say I love it. A question .. if you had to pick one knife for general purpose in the woods, would you go for this M4 or the F1D Cos ? Thx for feedback guys
@DutchBushcraftKnives
@DutchBushcraftKnives 7 жыл бұрын
Hey Morten, Thanks a lot! I would have to pick the F1D. It's completely care free and the steel is just so well balanced. The edge retention and handle geometry of the M4 are better but the F1D is ready for every environment, easy to sharpen, takes an amazingly sharp edge and above all I prefer the blade geometry (full convex on the f1D and full flat with secondary convex or V edge on the M4).

Bohler Uddeholm makes the BEST steel, I make knives and buy from my local office, have gotten D2, vanadis 4extra, and now I'm working on a giant two hand machete/knife out of caldie. I also have the lionsteel KUR in safety orange with the sleipner blade. All of these steels have been amazing and I hope BU takes over in all uses for steel, they make something great for anything you could think of. Check out the post "Looking for Bohler Udderholm blade steels?, Check this out!" on blade bladeforums for info on how I was able to open the door for small order and private ordering from bohler. if you make your knives or bladecrafts, your gonna want to check it out!

Very nice blade & video, guys. I'm new to blades and I'm hesitant to resharpen such a knife. How long did it take you to modify the blade? What you edited made it look easy with the whetstones. Thanks!
@DutchBushcraftKnives
@DutchBushcraftKnives 8 жыл бұрын
It took me around 30-45 minutes. The 400 grit stone takes up most of the time. If you are hesitant just buy a mora to get the basics. We actually started sharpening on a DC4 and a fallkniven A1 and F1. They were very expensive for us when we got them (when we were 16) but eventually we did learn to sharpen them ourselves. Just keep trying. Don't fear that the beauty of the knife will be ruined. It's a tool made to be used. When you get the hang of it all you can patch the knife back up into great shape.

Thanks for your answer! I am considering the F1D as a best option for my needs, just wanted to ask. I like the knife itself, but I consider the Fallkniven´s zytel sheath as best of all three knives as well - slim, low profile, absolutely easy to clean. So the F1D looks like the smallest package but with full potential. Keep up the good work, I really like your videos!

I'm planning to purchase this knife. I thought I would be interested in the cocobolo handles. But after you mentioned the softness and the dents, I am concerned the handles wouldn't hold up over time. Now, I'm thinking I would be better off with the G10 handles. I can't decide. Did you acquire the dents from batoning or just from normal use? If you could go back, would you still get the cocobolo handles, or would you go with the G10? Thank you.
@DutchBushcraftKnives
@DutchBushcraftKnives 7 жыл бұрын
I don't remember how I got the dents. if I could buy the knife I would go with G10 or olivewood. Probably G10. I have the G10 scales for this blade lying on my desk right now. Asked lionsteel if they could send me some and they did ! great company.
@dvolsky914
@dvolsky914 7 жыл бұрын
Dutch Bushcraft Knives You mentioned you would probably choose the olive wood over the cocobolo? Is it a harder wood? Is it the aesthetics? Do you view the cocobolo even less favorably now than you did when you made this video? They look nice from what I can tell. Do you expect them to deteriorate over time? I understand wood handles to have a warmer, more comfortable feel over G10. How is the traction on the wood? Would they become slippery if they become wet? Sorry for all the questions. I'm still not sure of which to choose and having trouble deciding. I want to make the right choice. Thanks again for your help.
