The Chloé bag is absolutely worth its money! Once I was gifted a Mandarina Duck bag in the beautiful colour cognac, but the strap was missing because it broke. It was so expansive to repair the strap in Frankfurt (same price as buying a new Mandarina Duck leather bag) that the person owning the bag preferred not to pay it, since she wasn't working anymore and didn't need the bag for the office. So, once owning the bag, I wanted to let it repaired. I've been to several tailor, designer and bag maker, before I found someone in Hamburg who agreed to work with leather. Seems that not every designer likes working with leather. Lucky me, he was a professional bag maker who learned it as a craftsmanship. The only condition he had: I need to get the materials (leather, metals), basically anything to fix the strap on the bag. Also he gave me some locations of wholesale traders, it took me several weeks to find especially the 'right leather', means with the same structure and colour. The wholesaler told me that I was very lucky, because the same leather never exists twice. When I collected all materials and came back to the bag maker, he was surprised to see me, because he didn't expect to see me again. He didn't believe I would get the materials together, because the leather and the special metals for the adjustable strap I wanted were not the usual materials of our time, but of the time 30 years ago. Having this story in mind, I concluded that a good quality bag I is something very unique and personal. Since I have this hand bag, I've never looked for a new one. I just didn't feel the need to do it.

How strange that it broke 🤔
@shiftit6133
@shiftit6133 2 жыл бұрын
@@ShushaSofia well, if you would see the original construction then you would know why it broke. I can't show you an example because Mandarina Duck doesn't produce this kind of bags (with this strap construction) anymore. To describe it: It was a very elegant construction where straps went through slits directly inside the bag and were hold from the inside. Basically the hard leather of the slits reamed the the leather of the strips. But okay the construction hold for almost 30 years before it broke. I guess it's okay for a bag almost daily in use. When I let it repaired I asked the bag maker to change the construction to the outside, so the strap wouldn't ream. Now, it looks more edgy/contoured (not like pure elegance anymore), but I hope it will last me a bit longer than it did originally ;)

I’m guessing this is not a bag used daily because as someone who only has three bags (one being evening) so really two daily bags, my bags don’t last 20 years. Great quality leather will go for 10 years but the interior will need to be re-done. My mom and grandma have the same problems. With daily usage, the leather eventually does show some cracking too.

When I lived in Italy I was surprised to see how many middle-class women owned genuine luxury purses like Louis Vuitton. They inherited then from their female relatives or invested their own money. For them, wastefulness was constantly buying cheap or middle market purses that wear out in a few years. They preferred to buy something that would last 20 years or more and was worth sending for repairs at a leather shop.

@0neAutumnLeaf
@0neAutumnLeaf 2 жыл бұрын
If you worry about damage, ensure you do your research and go for a durable material and you’ll be fine! For example, pick something made of saffiano leather, calf skin leather, etc. and avoid materials like suede, lamb skin leather, etc. I own an LV bag that cost twice as much as the Chloe and I don’t worry about it getting damaged because it’s the classic LV monogram canvas that is super durable and very scratch resistant.

I am a handbag designer and maker myself, my bags have a lot of tooling and carving included thus more for customers who love the western style look. When I see other peoples bags I always check at first the edgework, the stitching and the quality of the hardware. A craftsman or a company who invests in these components usually invests in high quality leather too or respectively the whole bag "speaks quality" and you get high value for your money.

Once upon a time, luxury used to equal quality. Nowadays, “luxury” brands tend to stamp their names on way too many cheap items. I think it’s the buyers’s fault: they encourage the brands by purchasing cheap, low quality items and paying way too much for them just because they happen to have a certain logo.

Depends of course on the Person using the item. Sorry, but if quality would be bad, LV would not be so successful. Millions of people are just paying for a brand but don’t ask for quality ? I don’t think so. And I had a quality bag from another well known brand. When I had a problem with the bag they have fixed it for free and i got the bag back totally cleaned. I am not sure until today if they just fixed the bag or if they changed it with a new one. Service behind those brands is excellent.

Some well known designers lease their name to other manufacturers. They might retain a voice but it's often over design, maybe materials, but not workmanship. In return, they get money. Other design houses make several tiers of clothing in-house. I know Ralph Lauren did this in the 1990s ... the RL pieces you could pick up at an outlet mall were *not* the same as the pieces in the boutiques. Check all items for quality, not just the low cost ones. My current casual handbag is a synthetic canvas, fairly inexpensive, from Duluth Trading Company (best known for construction worker clothing). The fabric and hardware is top-notch and it was very carefully sewn ... I've had it over 4 years, use it often, and it still looks brand new.

Printed, embossed Leather is just no good I have wallet, that looks like it through a war and back on the outside, however the construction is pretty solid and designwise in terms of functionality, it is great. Another place is custom hardware, at least in midrange bags, I tend to buy(because I can't afford cheap ones outside shopping nets), I experienced that non custom hardware is better quality, unless the brand have a strict quality control on that, and save money in other places, like mostly egde stiched, but not fully. Also quality and price doesn't always match, as a child I had this neonpink paper straw bag, that lasted forever.

So I bought not even a designer bag, but just a good quality leather one. I bought it pre-loved for next to nothing, and I carried it for about two years, still have it and it's still in good shape. Then moved onto designer bags and never looked back. I only shop pre-loved, though, so I spent very little money on my collection. Right now, I have five luxury bags I absolutely love and carry all the time, and I can totally see where the money went when they were made. Your Faye is gorgeous! Wear it in good health.

(e.g. there are high quality italian leather bags in the mid- price range) 💌👜👠👒

I love these videos of yours the most! I am just venturing into higher end bags. I bought the Le pliage based on one of your other videos. I don’t think I can justify the expense of a “true luxury” handbag but am better about looking for signs of quality over just a design I like, since I have noticed some cheap bags have great design aspects but are not produced with longevity in mind. Might not be an investment piece but it is worth the price I pay. Game changer, thank you!

(after watching a lot of sewing videos on youtube😁): I think it would be great if you did a video on the different sewing techniques that are used to sew the clothes you designed. For me personally, it was a real eye opener to see these different techniques, the amount of work that goes into things and also the way it made the clothes look totally different (way better!). It makes me appreciate and love well made items way more. Also, I find it to be so relaxing to watch 😂

Thank you so much for this video, you have the same name as my daughter! I love the relaxed manner in which you explain everything! I will share with friends. I do own a Desigual handbag but was $160 , about 6 years ago, here in Australia. It’s leather and fabric and I waited a couple of years before I bought it. It’s still as new! I love it’s bright colours and many pockets. I was surprised to hear yours was cheap, but now I see why.

Merci, Justine! I love handbags & appreciate getting such a close look at a luxury bag. That black Chloé bag is fabulous, made even better by your point-by-point comparison. My collection includes two tooled leather bags from Paraguay that I've had for more than 20 years. They've got a beautiful patina & just get better with age (& some care).

@@ringwe yes, but there is a large gap between a €500 purse and a €2000+ purse. I for one would be interested in seeing some in the 200-1000 range, and comparing when are you paying for quality, and when it it for the name- they can't tell me that there is suddenly 8k of quality in a Chanel bag.

Coach Vintage, Yes! I recently called in to coach to verify a 2nd hand vintage bag in great condition...I was surprised to learn the serial numbers are made to reflect coach outlet vs coach. I was pleased to learn I had the latter. Great point.

Coach: very tricky, as they indeed produce low-quality stuff specifically for outlets... Absolutely not comparable with the quality you'd find in the actual Coach shops - beware! PS: other brands do it too, e.g. M. Kors, K. Spade, etc.

I'm a recovering purse junkie. What you say about workmanship is spot on. One knotted, loose thread can set the whole bag peeling apart. That Chloe bag! Don't you just want to sit there and pet it? Tip about a cheaper handbag: Pick a plain, classic shape in black. The darker color hides any design shortcomings. Make sure it's roomy enough because cheap leather doesn't stretch worth a ding-dong.

The designer handbag is undoubtedly worth it! The superb craftsmanship, design and beautiful materials make it visually delightful to see, to touch and to wear. Your Chloé handbag is really beautiful. It lives in a completely different category from the high street models, and there can be no comparison, in my opinion. But of course, as you mentioned, there is place in our lives for the high street models as well. Not to mention the significant price tag! Thank you, Justine, for a very interesting and informative video, as always. 😘😘

Im really into handbags. Most people wouldnt think, by that I mean Id be interested in their sales-value, when in truth its because of their craftsmanship. I love the handbags from Ralph Lauren, because their shape holds up well and can look timeless. Also a more recent established brand I like, is Kozha Numbers. It takes a more modern touch and plays with the basic elements of bas. Some pieces take a very minimalistic turn :) I used to like aigner, coach and furla but their recent designs dont really speak to me. Nevertheless I believe their Quality is great from what I have seen in person. I just feel like the trend of big monograms became bigger. + Funky edgy prints take away a lot from making a bag speak through its form. I just feel like every other design company has to bring out a camera bag where the shapes are all the same but the monograms make the 'difference'. :/ I miss the sense of vintage bags where the shape dominates and the texture/textiles compliment it all over. Maybe Im very classic about that.... (I love the additional individual/more complex bagstraps a lot though! ... preferably without the name...) Sorry for my ramble 😊

I have a genuine Longchamp pliage bag and a fake one. The fake shed plastic lining inside the bag and the handle stitching ripped . I find that cheaper real leather bags wear better than expensive faux leather generally. Usually the hardware on them isn't as good quality, but they last well.

Love your tips. After your last video on what to look for in a quality bag, I bought a black Rebecca Minkoff bag that is sort of chanel inspired but not a dupe. Much much cheaper than a big name designer bag but still nicely made. I can't justify the high cost of a chanel or Chloe bag even though I think they are very beautiful pieces of art.
