How to wear leggings + how to find good quality ones ǀ Justine Leconte

There are many ways to wear leggings. But before I show you how I style leggings in my everyday outfits, I want to explain how to recognize good quality leggings.
To help you get the right fit, consider these criteria:
1. Choose the length based on your body
2. Make sure the seams are not pulling (or change sizes if they do)
3. Check the back rise (especially if you are curvy)
4. Choose the right type of waistband
5. Test the fabric: is it thick enough to cover you and to be resistant over time
6. Have a look at the fiber content (on the label inside): cotton/elastane or viscose/elastane are good combinations.

In the US, leggings are more commonly worn as "athleisure", meaning athletic wear worn during leisure time. It is common to see women of all ages wearing an athletic top with leggings, as if they just went to yoga class.... But they are out shopping and running errands. This has become normal and is seen in many different areas, as well as different income levels (Not just Walmart shoppers, haha). It isn't a common thing in the workplace, but I do think that depends on the industry and location.

Same in Australia :) Girls here wear leggings as pants, but we love our Lulu Lemons, Lorna Janes, and Adidas, which are thick fabric and usually high waisted. Usually we don't worry about covering below the waist with a top. This is acceptable everywhere except for professional environments :)

Those are not leggings and those types of exercises pants are made completely different than traditional leggings. Personally I find it nast when people wear those outside of exercising. It just shows sloppiness and poor choice in clothing.

I wear black leggings tucked into my boots (black equestrian style) with very nice tunics in fall and winter. This way also works with an untucked shell and a duster length cardigan. It looks professional.

It would be helpful to know your body type! I'm somewhere inbetween a pear and an hourglass, so for me it's important to accentuate my waist i.e. a highwaisted skirt with a cropped or tucked in top. When tucking, just be sure that the fabric of the top isn't too bulky and doesn't show underneath the skirt. If you are not the tallest, like me, slits can help break the silhouette. In that case, also make sure that no socks are showing if you pair the skirt with "closed shoes". It will make you look dumpy. Oh yeah the waistband must neither be too tight (you will look like an 1850 farmer's wife after christmas dinner) or too loose (well, the skirt will drop). As to skirt styles, there are some great thin cotton ones ideal for summer, there's casual tshirt-fabric type ones, pleated, metallic, embroidered, with tulle, circle skirts ... SO MANY! I usually find that most skirts are either casual or festive/party. If you work in a fashionable environment, you can get away with either. You can dress down a festive skirt with sneakers and a jumper. :)

And yeah I've been tucking in my shirt and wearing a belt over the top but the belt was rather loose. So it didn't sufocated me or drop my skirt off my body. It was rather in convenient. I have another skirt i.e. denim. It's light blue in color. I wore it twice or thrice. Although I've recieved many compliments on that still I believe that I should improvey styling with that. I wore it in winters with a turtle neck and denim jacket. Now I'm a teacher/lecturer so I don't wanna look like a baby (ppl usually think that I'm highschool).

Very informative video obviously. In India leggings have made a place with the traditional attire in a casual sense. Most females wear leggings with Indian tops called Kurtis which are actually tunics with side slit, which can reach till above the knee or even below that. And yes the right pick changes the whole game.

Thank you for saying that leggings are NOT a replacement for trousers/pants. As an elementary school teacher, I love leggings because of the comfort and mobility. Since I am tall and modest, dresses I couldn’t wear to work because of the lack of length, I can wear now with a pair of leggings. I live in the Southern USA for reference. As an Italian, having lived abroad for a long time, I think that how people wear leggings around Europe is a matter of fashion-culture, if that make any sense. For example, here in Italy, leggings are only appropriate with a longer top, and I would never wear them instead of thighs under a dress or under shorts, or under any kind of skirt. But in the UK or in Austria is really common to see people wear them instead of trousers, even to fancy places, even transparent fabric. But over time I realized that in the UK what is considered to be "fashion" is way more free and wide then here in Italy, where appropriate styles are more "classic", and everyone is always judgemental about other people style. Personally, I do love leggings, they are my favorite autumn/winter everyday style, with high boots and a longer jumper.

In India, we have leggings for a longer top with slits on the sides which we call a kurta(s). It's slightly longer than a tunic but not as long as a dress and to go with it the leggings are super long and crinkle at the bottom.

In Canada, it's considered a little too casual to wear only leggings to most work places especially in offices or sales. Most women even for casual wear would cover their behinds with a short skirt or tunic length top. The odd time you see a (usually young) woman wearing leggings only but that's fairly rare. I love them but you're so right about the fit, fiber content and quality!

Kathleen Meadows I also live I Canada and sorry, but mostly every woman, young and old, wears leggings here as replacement for pants. As for me, I never wear leggings outside of a gym. Sport wear should be worn for exercise and not as an every day outfit. And if worn always with something longer to cover up the behind ;)

I live in Tampa Bay. It's extremely casual here. Also very humid in summer. Everywhere you go you see women wearing black leggings with tee shirts. Unfortunately, I've fallen into this category but I like that I blend in. If you're wearing even a casual dress to a supermarket people look because it's so uncommon. They're very comfortable! I've seen photos of the Duchess of Cambridge wearing leggings with a nice sweater and white trainers out and about in past years. Was a nice casual look on her.

I wear leggins as pants, they're really comfy and you can find plenty styles. It's a thing in Spain and I feel they're quite normalised now. Definitely it's a really interesting topic. In France when I wore them as pants people thought that i was going to the gym or I was a sporty girl haha they had a different concept.

Here in Sweden you can definitly wear leggings for work, but you will need to dress it up a little bit and make sure that the derrière is covered when you style it.

great topic . thank you. I am disabled so leggings are great for around the house, comfy and casual but I would never have worn them in a work situation. I live in scotland. I am plus size and finding leggings can be fun...not lol. so many have such a short rise that they are impossible to sit down in. these tend to be cheaper . I have found very good plus size legging in good old M and S and that is where i buy them consistently now. high waistband , great fit, and thick enough . oh...I would never ever wear them without a long t shirt or jumper to cover my bum. one of my fav autumn /winter looks is a big oversized sweater with leggings and ankle boots. add a nice scarf and shoulder bag and i feel great xx Plus size ladies can wear leggings well especially if you are apple shaped and your legs are long. xxx oh I am blethering again. i just love your channel . For me leggings are a good substitute to tights in the winter since they are ticker and enable me to wear merino socks under neat to keep my feet warm while wearing a skirt or a dress. Otherwise capri length in the summer with a skirt or a too short dress to wear bare legged.

That's another great point, age appropriate style. Some argue age is not a factor, and that the idea of restricting one's clothing choice is antiquated and doesn't adapt to current lifestyles. My own personal view is somewhere in between. I think if a woman feels (notice I say feels and not looks- as in to adapt to someone else's ideals), fit, youthful and healthy they should dress according to their own sense of what's fitting and comfortable in their surroundings. It can be modern and classy. The same goes for other things like can an older woman sport long hair? Many famous ones as examples do like Jerry Hall, Christie Brinkley, Jane Seymour etc.

I'll add a comment here as another Canadian and ones that lives in the birthplace of Lululemon, Vancouver. I find since I'm pretty active and we have so much rain that wearing active leggings as pants are a great option for my casual wear. I even wear them with short tops too if I'm feeling particularly good about my stomach that day! I just make sure I don't wear ones that aren't squat proof (see-through in the rear when bending).

puja samantaray i am definitely not Justine but i learned from her to remember proportions! If you are confident to carry out large extract prints then go ahead! Chevron is my favourite... But i also like black and white abstract print ones! They can be teamed with sooo many solid colors. I follow capsule weardrobe...so few solid colors and three or four differently printed leggings...and i am good to go! The material i select for solid colors is cotton elastane (lux lycra) but printed one comes with viscose elastane or viscose.

I love leggings but thicker kind. I own corduroy and heat tech (Uniqlo) ones that are like pants in addition to more traditional leggings and leggings to work out. I think leggings are accepted in Southern California especially under tunics. I say be happy wearing your leggings as pants if you want, under tunics, or do not wear leggings if you do not like them. Theres tons of styles and types of clothing for all of us to be happy.

Interesting video. I'm in Australia and have never seen leggings in the workplace but I've always worked in corporate environments. I personally only wear them to lounge around the house or do yoga or other exercise but a lot of women tend to wear exercise wear out and about even if they're not exercising these days. I personally don't like that look but I get that I'm in a minority there. I think it's kind of interesting at what point leggings become jeggings or take on some other more tailored look with different fabrics.

I have dozens of colorful leggings, and three that are black. I live in the US and some people wear them as pants - this looks fine on very thin and/or very young girls, but it is not great on most adults. I am also tall, and I wear them under long shirts or short dresses.

I have a request too :D If you find time, could you please do a video on how to look younger/older regarding which clothes you wear? I’m almost 18 and I do look like 12, but I don’t see the point in wearing that much make up (usually nothing or mascara and I want to start wearing red lipstick). Smoky eyes and subtle lip color; red lipstick looks too "dress-up" for someone with a young face. Blazers with jeans, or pencil skirts with a fitted t-shirt. 2-3 inch heels are good, no higher. The right haircut can make all the difference, too.

Now that I am almost 60, I don’t mind that people think I am ten years younger than I am, but I remember the strain of being a 29 yo health care professional and being seen as a teenager. It really wasn’t fun back then. Here’s some suggestions, do with them as you will: If you wear red lipstick, just pat a little on your lips with your 4th finger. Too much density of lip color will look “off.” Consider wearing your hair (if long) in the famous “French twist” hairstyle. It’s a bit of a bother to do, but it might help. If you wear your hair short, I can only suggest trying different types of haircuts/shapes to get the effect you want. A “pixie” cut might look very nice but might also accentuate the “12 yr old” effect. Avoid graphic tees and “cutesy” prints except when you want to look younger. Regarding jewelry - when you really don’t want to look too young, wear medium-scaled jewelry. I admit to being on “Team Trousers” rather than “Team Leggings,” but you may look more adult in tailored trousers. You did not say if you were tall or short - this might effect your style strategy.

I do the same!!! I wear warm leggings under my jeans during most of the winter here 😁 And if I _need_ to go out during the coldest days or huge snowfall, I will straight up *wear snow pants* too. Thank you Justine! As you mentioned, here in the U.S., leggings are worn at ANY occasion (unfortunately). They have become the go-to because they are easy. Easy does not translate to looking good or appropriate. Your ideas about leggings and the basic criteria when choosing for each body type would solve a lot of the questionable looks out there. And, with a bit more styling as you show here, women would up their game and look/feel better about the choice to wear leggings rather than just throwing them on because they are easy. In the Netherlands, or at least in my city (Rotterdam) I see a lot of women wearing leggings to replace trousers. And not nice thick leggings either, I can often see what underwear they're wearing (or not wearing as the case can be O_o). Once I could even see the label on the inside of the legging, that really is too thin. Can't say I'm a fan :P I prefer to wear mine like you do :)

They peobably dont realise that their leggings are see-through. Its not that easy to tell in the mirror indoors. Depending on the severity of transparency, and if they have the opportunity to cover up, tell them. They will in all likelihood never wear them again. A girl at the gym a while ago told me that my workout tights were getting transparent. It was from wear and tear, and i never noticed. Until i had the noney to replace them i made sure to wear black boxers/hipster under them. They might take it badly, but im always grateful if someone lets me know.

I get what you're saying, you have a good point, but A) we're not talking about ladies at the gym wearing proper sports leggings but ladies on the street wearing cheap (fast) fashion leggings that really should always be combined with tops that are long enough to cover the bum and B) (and this one is the most important), I'm not gonna tap every, or any, unfamiliar lady on the shoulder when walking outside to tell her that her underwear is showing. Even if I could get past my shyness, I just have the feeling it wouldn't go over well, coming from a stranger (who apparently looks at bums) ;P I did however once let a lady on the train know her fly was undone, which I happened to notice as she was standing and I was sitting on the stairs (the train was full) cause it was the right thing to do. I did have to beat my shyness into submission though, it did not come easy.

Leggings were called stirrups then and had the elastic you put under your foot and put the socks over that. And were always worn with a long tunic top. We never wore them with short tops. Always covered the butt and crotch area with an over sized top. Now girls wear them as glorified tights and it's really ugly and very tacky looking.
