I love the irregularly shaped pearls as well. More character. Just an FYI, I was restringing an old seed pearl necklace and noticed how after I was done, the stringing was not as tight. Well, I saw on another video that the person rinses the thread and stretches it out and then lets it dry. This really helped and did a better job. Hope that helps some people. Watching this reminded me that some time ago I bought a lot of the silk string in many different colors - but I don't remember what I thought I'd use it for (and obviously I never used it for anything because I'd forgotten I even have it!). Wow!!!! I have been making jewellery for the past 3 years and have had pearls for nearly as long. I haven't made them as every video I have watched has knotted in between each pearl and used French-wire. I have tried the knotting with the silk thread and have even got a fair way through, before some catastrophe struck (a bit like you and crimp covers perhaps😂). I have also been unable to source French-wire through my usual jewellery suppliers here in Queensland. After watching you make this lovely bracelet I am inspires to try again, I may even have a go at using memory wire. Thank You sooooo much

You need a pair of crimping pliers. It will hold the cover really well without slipping & they crimp the crimp bead into a roll rather than a flat piece. I dont do it without these. Love pearls & french wire. I always add 3 jumprings to the toggle end as it makes it so much more flexible when fastening. If course you need to allow for it in your measurements. Silk tgread is very stro g but i would say " less likely to break"

I think they are just too small for my fingers. That's OK, we got there in the end. Interesting about the 3 jumprings. Thanks for sharing that.

I find it easier to close the crimp cover using my crimp pliers with the large round portion. It holds onto the cover nicely.

I really love this bracelet, and the French wire at the end to protect the silk string. I also enjoy the different sized pearls. The beads in between give the bracelet an extra punch. It looks really nice. Just curious, why is it when pearls are strung the silk string is used? Is silk used for any other beading? How do you know what size silk to use? Some videos that I watch you have to stretch the silk and others not?

Thank you, Lori. Lots of questions. I believe silk thread is used for pearls so that it doesn't damage them. I have not used silk for other projects but I'm sure others do. I would choose the thickest silk thread that will fit through the holes - it will be stronger. Silk by nature is very strong anyway. Yes, you can stretch the silk before. I've not done this and have had no problems but it can't hurt to do it. This video started off being a knotting between pearls technique video but it morphed into a tutorial about French wire. Would you like me to do a knotting video too?

No problem. In my experience they do. I have only had one piece that lost it's colour but it was more because it got very scratched rather than losing the electroplating. I hope that helps.

Hi Robin, thanks for your question. Do you mean, how would you know to use French wire? The silk thread I'm using is generally used with pearls. Fireline is generally used for bead weaving. Tiger tail is the strongest. You can still use the French wire with tiger tail if you like the look.

Fabulous video ❤. One thing I e always wondered about is, is the crimp bead alone enough to stop the thread from slipping out? The thread gets cut pretty close to the crimp and I’m always worried this can easily slip back through the flattened crimp. 😊

Thank you so much, Ranjana. I used to feel the same way but I've not had one fail. It's all about getting that crimp bead squashed down so hard that it can't budge. If you feel unsure, you can always add a tiny dab of glue.

That's a good question, Ruth. You need to find out the inner diameter of the French wire and the diameter of the wire you are using.

Great question Angela. The reason I used the French wire was to stop any fraying. I wouldn't use a crimp tube and silk without it. I've never had it fray around the crimp tube. You could always tie it off instead of using a crimp tube and use a crimp cover to hide the knot it you're having that problem.

Hi Nadine, yes and no. I find that the wire guardians sometimes can have little burrs on them so I wouldn't use them with silk thread. I've also done a video on using wire guardians which you can find here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pZC1apKcf9Kambs I really like the look of the French wire which is why I would use it over a wire guardian but they both do the same job if you're using a stronger stringing material.

Thank you, Lori. I thought about that and I did watch a tutorial where someone (Beadsmith) had used a crimp bead. I don’t think that it will wear out the thread simply because of the direction of the pressure of the thread. The thread is going through and the stress is not pulling the thread at right angles to the crimp bead. I will wear it lots and see if I can wear it out, then I’ll report back.

That's a great question, Michele. You generally only use silk thread with pearls. Silk is surprisingly durable. You would normally knot the thread between the pearls which is what I intended to do in this video but it didn't work out that way. The reason is so that if your piece breaks you don't lose all your pearls because each one is knottted separately.

I always wondered what French wire was? Is it sturdier than a wire guardian? Or is it more for looks?

Thank you, Lorena. I think possibly a wire guardian could be a bit more sturdy although when using silk thread, I would be worried that it would cut the thread. I would definitely use a wire guardian if I was using something other than thread. I do love the look of French wire though.

Hi! I’m finding that my thread is fraying or snapping on some of my pieces after people wear them. I’m thinking it’s the abrasion against the sharp edge of the crimp cover. Is there a way to finish a silk thread necklace without a crimp cover or using something that will rub?

Great question. It may actually be the crimp tube that's cutting the thread. There are a couple of things you could try. First you could try coating your thread with beeswax. I used to do that when I was hand quilting and it stopped any fraying. Second, you might try using the Magical Crimp Forming Tool which negates the need for a crimp cover. I have a pearl necklace that has broken. I salvaged all the beads and b ok the ends of original clasp. I would like to restring in a manner that if the strand broke again, beads wouldn't fly everywhere. How do I do that?

Hi Adrianne, great question. Lots of people don't use crimp beads on silk thread but I've never had a problem with it, especially when I use the French wire. I know that doesn't really help if you're getting conflicting advice but I've seen others use them too - like Beadsmith and Fire Mountain Gems who are the big boys in jewellery making.

I'm curious if crimps and crimp covers could cut the silk thread over the time. Also, the crimp tubes folding is optional? I have a hard time using crimps and would be happy at least to skip the folding part ))

That's a great question and one I get asked all the time. I did answer it in my 30 most asked questions video (linked below). I would be worried that crimps would cut the silk thread over time. I would simply knot it and pop a crimp cover over the top. That should work as long as there aren't any sharp bits on the crimp cover. With regard to the crimping itself, yes, you can just squeeze it flat. I always get into trouble when I say that but I did it for years before I knew that you needed to fold them over - before the invention of crimping pliers probably.
