My nephew has just returned from his deployment to Japan, as a US Marine. And I have a niece who is currently an officer in the Navy, in San Diego, where she grew up. (She was born in the East Coast, when her father, before her, was in the Navy & was rotated there, from San Diego, where he married my sister.) My sisters and I were a product of a historical situation somewhat similar to this, in the mid 1970s. We had to cross the Maekong River, when the American WW2 surplus light M1 carbines given to him and 30,000 other of my hill tribe... no longer were able to win the Vietnam War against a much larger, Russian-Chinese Communist supplied North Vietnamese. My two sisters whose son & daughter having been or still is a part of the US Armed Forces came to the US as small toddlers. (The one whose eldest daughter currently is a US Naval officer was born in a Thai refugee came, in the lat 1970s, and she came to the US just a few months older than this Afghan baby here...We have been in the US close to 45 years...) There are many things not working well with our US government; and there are many very selfish, hateful people, here in the US and all around the world. (BTW, when we first arrived, mist to late 1970s, it's CONSERVATIVE Republicans who were the most welcoming Americans; times have changed a bit the last 40+ years! Today, 2023, the GOP is full of angry Whites, as they converged with all the KKKs, the Proud Boys, the Neo Nazis, the White Aryan Brotherhood types, and the delusional Christian types...) In any event... the US government and MOST of the American people are decent, liberty & freedom loving people; both institutions and people TRY THEIR HARDEST to welcome those they've promised to help who have fought & who have died alongside American soldiers, in battlefields all over the world, across many generations...

@@kiabtoomlauj6249 agree with you about CONSERVATIVE Republicans - - - Flashback: Jerry Brown, Biden and other Dems refused to accept Vietnamese refugees - - January 30, 2017 Some liberal Democrats are fighting back tears when discussing President Donald Trump’s travel ban on Muslims from seven nations. But in 1975, leftist Dems went to great lengths to keep Vietnamese refugees (even orphans) out of the United States. During his first stint as governor, Jerry Brown fought to stop Vietnamese refugees from being delivered to California. /AP Trump issued the order, the White House said, so that a better system to vet refugees coming from those nations can be put into place. The Democrat complaints in 1975 appeared to center on the fact that the refugees were escaping communism, an ideology, analysts say, liberals did not find that objectionable. Leading the effort to ban the Vietnamese refugees was California’s Gov. Jerry Brown. Other prominent Democrats calling for the ban were Delaware’s Sen. Joe Biden, former presidential “peace candidate” George McGovern, and New York Congresswoman Elizabeth Holtzman. Julia Taft, who in 1975 headed up President Gerald Ford’s Inter-agency Task Force on Indochinese refugee resettlement, told author Larry Engelmann in his book, “Tears Before the Rain: An Oral History of the Fall of South Vietnam” that “the new governor of California, Jerry Brown, was very concerned about refugees settling in his state.”

History repeats itself every few decades. The images of the Afghans trying to escape the chaos of their country bears similarities to the desperation the Vietnamese felt had during the fall of Saigon in 1975. With the advancing vietcong in Saigon and the Taliban in Afghanistan people rushed to be saved by the Americans. To have sacrificed so many US troops, not to mention the cost and then abandon the country is a disgrace. Glad this baby is safe and the family is doing well.
