Afghanistan has one of the world’s highest drug addiction rates. According to the Taliban, there are an estimated four million drug addicts across the country.
Babrak, a former mujahideen fighter, used to be one of them. Now, he is committed to supporting addicts to detox in one of the capital’s under-resourced drug rehabilitation hospitals.
Since the Taliban took power in 2021, international aid has been withdrawn and public services are on the brink of collapse. Babrak and a handful of medical staff struggle to offer a line of hope as the Taliban's anti-drug policies are put into action.
A Second Shot is a film by Marcel Mettelsiefen.

The gift of democracy and 20 years of occupation brought significant challenges to Afghanistan. The previous governments in Afghanistan were marked by corruption and instability. Warlords, drug dealers, and mafia elements held positions of power within the government, leading to widespread lawlessness and insecurity. Even near the presidential palace, people were not safe and faced frequent robberies. During this dark period, kidnapping, land grabbing, and embezzlement of public funds were everyday occurrences. Bribery was rampant within governmental offices, further perpetuating a culture of corruption. The president lacked the authority to make meaningful changes, as the country was effectively controlled by powerful drug dealers and warlords. Police officers and military personnel often engaged in extortion, stopping individuals on the streets for money. Regrettably, drug abuse was pervasive among high school and university students, regardless of gender. Additionally, distressingly, there were training centers where women were taught how to engage in kidnapping activities. These circumstances were further exacerbated by the unfortunate support provided by Western countries to these unsavory individuals over the span of 20 years.

I've worked in substance abuse field for years in the USA. It's the most rewarding work. Hard work, but worth it. To see people change their lives around for the better, become healthier, and repair relationships, is just so beautiful. Watching the hopeless become hopeful, the scared become brave, and the uninterested become the most motivated. It's so beautiful. I've met some amazing and incredibly intelligent people. The stigma in the USA is that addicts are unintelligent criminals. I've met psychiatrists who were detoxing. Doctors who were detoxing, forensic scientists in rehab, teachers, CNAs, artists, bakers, police officers, fire fighters, so many people. People are more than their addictions. Addicts are not their addiction. It does not define who they are. Please be kind and help those in need. Narcan training is often free at local Healthcare facilities.

Your prayers won‘t help this people. They experience extreme poverty on a daily basis. They need investments in education, health care (especially mental health care) and infrastructure. The society desperately needs a social security net. The ultra-rich Arab countries need to stop building mosques around the world, we have enough of those - they need to invest in Afghanistan. But there is a huge problem: Taliban. Taliban are religious fundamentalists, they have no idea how to govern a country.

So much of this messaging is like "if you don't want to be poor, then just don't be poor!" Sometimes it's NOT your personal weakness. There are many factors on the road to becoming an addict, it's not just "you did this to yourself, so just get over it!" Poverty, lack of education, lack of stability - those ARE legit reasons for addiction.

The problem that I see with this hero-worshipping thing is that in the end, it only creates inflated egos and abuse of power. I can see this falling onto corruption in a decade, as there seems to be not counter-balance and somebody who checks on him. "All power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely." I am not claiming that what he is doing is bad, but there is something about the maverick about him and the way he goes around things, in my opinion.

This documentary saddens me, and I wish Afghanistan a brighter future. The man talking on top of the bunk bed spoke some truths. The population is living in poverty, uneducated, no jobs and no future. Education is key to bringing a nation out of poverty and I hope the Taliban realise this and implement schools in all regions of Afghanistan. @@jakobaa9031 with all due respect, drugs is dangerous and it's better to help them by force then letting them in their misery. if i'd be addicted to some drugs to the point where i'd start pickpocketting, just to get some drugs like the man that got interviewed, then i'd gladly accept their help. sometimes, violence is needed. to give you another example, if someone wanted to k*ll himself by throwing himself, i'd rather use all my strength to not let him jump and i'd be ready to knock him down so he can't use that knife to end his life. some people always say "no violence" but violence is not always a bad thing. i would use violence to defend innocent people for example. also, if you disagree with the forced hospitalization as being the best option then please provide a better solution in your comment, thank you. btw as a guy said, they need to stop the dealers, i agree but im talking from the point of view of the guy who we followed during the interview, because all he can do is what is he doing. i cant see another option for him.
