I met a guy from this world. A survivor of those times. He went to Moscow on exchange as a young student in the early 1980s and was really impressed with it. He told me about how the metro there was better than our public transport in Melbourne, in 2022.

@@cocorou6094 Tovarish. I have one that's even more fun. I met this wonderful Afghan while training in civil construction, with him and his son, near Dandenong. This is one of the centers of the Afghan community in Australia. There's a very long history with Afghans here, due to the British Empire taking them from their homeland at various points. Anyway ... it just so happened that this was while the United States was having it's helicopter moment from Kabul. The community there talks, and while obviously they were not precisely fans of the Taliban, they were glad that the foreign invaders were leaving. But most remarkably they told me that one of the most senior American puppets had relocated to their area, and had a mansion nearby where we were training. They clearly thought of this guy as corrupt as hell. I can't remember which one it was, but it was something like the Vice-President.

To the few on here blindly parading in favour of Communism, ironically, let it be known that the Communist revolution started the process where Afghanistan started to crumble. Had the King remained, the country would've most likely not fallen into war and despair, which only occurred when the Russians invaded, and out came foreign interests like Pakistan that helped to create the Taliban and other Islamist groups.
@cocorou60942 ай бұрын
Imao It's complete bullshit. Islamist insurgency had started since 1975, three years before the revolution. Afghanistan was already a impoverished failed state, afflicted by famine, corruption, ethnic and sectarian violence, and having no control of most of its supposed territory. Afghanistan had became hated by his neighbors, Pakistan and Iran because the pashtun ultra nationalists that king Zahir and prince Daoud were wanted to annex half of Pakistan to reunite all the pashtun people in Afghanistan and became central Asia's main power. The two countries had been in conflict since the very beginning, it's not the USSR who had pushed Pakistan to intervene in Afghanistan, it was the reverse. Zaher and Daoud's racist pro-pashtun policy towards ethnic minorities and brutal attempt to impose a modern state where there was only tribes makes the country extremely fragile and strengthened Pakistan, who undermine Afghanistan while founding islamist parties like Rabbani and Massud's Jamiat-e-Islami and Hekmatyar's Hezb-e-Islami. Afghanistan was a Soviet union-puppet state since the 1960s, being completely dependent of the USSR for the military, civil infrastructure, universities and trade. The communists didn't pop up out of nowhere, they were the product of more than 20 years of slow Soviet penetration of the elite that was permitted by the blind and mediocre pashtun nationalists that zaher shah and prince daoud were, who continued the same policy for years without realizing what was happening in their country. Babrak Karmal, who led Afghanistan from 1979 to 1986 during the Soviet invasion was already the N°2 of the Afghan government from 1973 to 1975, right after Daoud ! The communists were the continuation of the king that you defend they applied the same policies. It's ridiculous to think that everything was going to be alright if the revolution never happened, by the late 1970s, islamism was on the rise, from Iran to Egypt. The Islamist would have take power, sooner or later, and no one was going to let them do their shit. The "communists" of Afghanistan (who were themselves divided between Khalqists, Parchamists and Maoists !), had in fact mostly little to do with class struggle or abolish capitalism, they wanted a secular and modern Afghanistan, free from tribalism and obscurantism, a country that the backward mullahs and tribal chiefs or landlords rejected since it will destroy their power. They have choose to let their country forever in an idealized nightmarish middle-age Islamic feudal society. The "communists" failed to achieve their goals thanks to the United States and the pseudo democratic West, one must not be supprised to see that Afghanistan is now going to be in darkness, for long. Communism didn't kill Afghanistan. Tribalism, feudalism, radical Islamism and nationalism did. (And by the way, the impressive amount of nostalgic comments here shows that a lot of Afghan are indeed seeing the communist era as progressive).

Indeed, you're right, it was a promising time period, but the communist governement (Khalq) was too much radical, its extremists reforms create chaos in a country which was even before the 1978 revolution at the gates of civil war, making the soviet invasion inevitable. Afghanistan was not ready for communsim and became the victim of US-Pakistan/USSR rivalry. If the governement had taken a more cautious and less brutal approach, maybe all the shit with islamism and taliban wouldn't have happened, we'll never know..

Best wishes to all afghan people from former enemy, soviet soldier.

@Jamal-if7wm you're right, America, Iran and Pakistan have really hurt the Afghan people with their support of islamism to topple Afghanistan since the late 60s, their responsibility is huge, but the Khalq government had also a part of responsibility in the war, along with king zahir shah and president Daoud khan, with their revendication of part of Pakistan, their neglectful attention for the countryside and their too much pro-pashtun policy. I think the parcham could have handed the situation better if they would have take power immediately after the Saur revolution rather than the khalq.

@@cocorou6094communism (Marxism-Leninism) is also too extreme as is what the taliban claim is Sharia and Islamic law. You need a blend of things for it to work in Afghanistan. A little bit of capitalism and democratic socialism. No on extreme side of the spectrum.
