They understand Urdu! Urdu and Hindi stem both from the older Indian dialect "Hindustani". Urdu is Hindustani with more Persian/Arabic influence, which means it has more similar words to Pashto (main language spoken in Afghanistan) so it's easier for them to understand. Hindi has more Sanskrit words
