I worked with some Afghan guys in London years ago, really sound guys. They were very gentle and kind, didn’t mind that I’m gay, even celebrated the fact with me when I found love! The image that’s painted of them in western media is so out of whack with who they are in their minds, hearts and souls. I was between apartments at one point and needed a place to say for a couple of nights before my next apartment was available to move into. Mentioned it to one of these guys and he was like “yeah sure, stay at mine”. I figured he would let me kip on his sofa for a couple of nights as it was a one bedroom flat. Nope. He had cleaned the place top to bottom, fresh bed sheets, fridge full of food, gave me a key and said it’s all mine for as long as I need while he stayed with a cousin of his for the few nights, while constantly checking to see if I had everything I needed. Still get chills when I think of the loving kindness I’ve experienced from Central Asians in general. I’m from Ireland, “the land of a thousand welcomes”, but these people take the top place when it comes to hospitality. (Disclaimer: of course there are assholes everywhere too!)
