As China moves to engage with the Taliban, it is setting its sights on Afghanistan's vast mineral resources.
The interim government wants Chinese recognition so that mining can begin. The plans could threaten some of the nation's archaeological treasures.
Al Jazeera’s Charles Stratford reports from Mes Aynak, Afghanistan.

What are you talking about? $50 billion dollars is peanuts when compared to Afghanistan’s needs, much less America’s appetite. US spends $50 billion dollars a day just to run its own country. Do you think it is enough to entice US half way around the World and spend $2.2 trillion dollars to gain $50 billion or $100 billion dollars in non-functional mine wealth? Think again!

Tell the Taliban leaders do not give any such artifact to any country. reopen or rearth. the whole city and let the people visit it and see the old things including statues and in one day they can make millions of pound from a single site and that alone will pay for everything. I am a Chinese living overseas, and I wish the people of Afghanistan all the best in rebuilding their country. I actually can understand what they're going through. They've had 40 years of war, often imposed from the outside, and their society is in ruins. We had our own 150 years of chaos, wars, civil wars and failed revolutions that left us in ruins until we began to rebuild. I hope that Afghanistan's neighbours, and all Asian nations, will now extend a hand to help the Afghans economically. Afghans will have to govern themselves and resolve their internal problems, but the outside can provide assistance in aid, investments and trade. Now that Iran has also been admitted to the SCO, I hope that Afghanistan will also soon follow, like all its other neighbours.

Why didn’t it cause a worldwide outrage when a four century old Babri Masjid was demolished? Why doesn’t it cause an outrage when rare articles of immense antique and archaeological value are looted from Saddam’s palace only to be smuggled into Europe where they award you with a legal immunity for such thefts? Last but not the least, with a genuine respect for our collective human heritage, the question , however, remains: Who should matter more - the dead or the hungry, thirsty and bombed to the Stone Age living humans? We almost know the answers from he immoral West and the Moral Universal !

This was a very uplifting news report. Much as I distrust the Taliban, I really, really hope deep in my heart that they have changed and mellowed down in the past two decades. I don’t expect them to turn all liberal overnight, just a little less bigoted and hardline. Afghanistan has a wealth of natural resources. If managed well, it could lead to peace and prosperity for all of Afghanistan’s people. Only if they could ease up on the religious propaganda.

Propaganda? Are you for real? I mean seriously? they went thru a pain staking war with alot of sacrifices for God for 20 friggen years. Incase you still don't understand them, then atleast read the Quran and the life of Prophet Muhammad pbuh. What's more valuable than this copper and stone idols is the faith inside their hearts. Look at their mannerisms. Humble with good manners as compared to the murderous rowdy cowboys of the US army who pillaged in Iraq and Afghanistan. The northern alliance warlords went on a massacre and rape spree when they took over with the help of the US. Taliban are not thugs or terrorists. Even the amnesty they announced when conquering Kabul reflects the amnesty Prophet Muhammad announced with he conquered Makkah. These people ARE like this. It's not propaganda.

The Taliban seem more generous toward the artifacts of jahiliyya than was once the case. That is good. May it continue. The Buddhists of the region are long gone, the Buddhists of today far away. It is understandable, if not good, to want to get rid of the memorial legacy of a belief system one believes false, even wrong, more even than the remembrances of past leaders or soldiers. But there is room for generosity.
