Kinda weird that F4Us are carrying out night raids in 1944, when in real life the F6Fs of the USS Enterprise (CV-6) were the only trained American night fighters at the time, also how does some random marine raider (presumably) know about the manhattan project?

Individual units and detachments are sourced out all the time. It probably wasn’t uncommon to have a Det of F4Us be TDY to a different carrier for a specific mission/time frame.
