In June of 2003 the American Film Institue revealed the 100 greatest heroes and villains in American Cinema. The list of the 50 greatest villains is provided for you here to the song Heartless by Kanye West. Enjoy!

This list was made in 2003, so the new guys on this list would be: Daniel Plainview (There Will Be Blood (2007)), Anton Chigurh (No Country for Old Men (2007)), Sweeny Todd (Sweeny Todd (2007)), The Joker (The Dark Knight (2008)), and Hans Landa (Inglorious Basterds (2009)).

Can't believe AFI didn't name Clarence Boddiker (Kurtwood Smith in Robocop)! Clarence is hands down one of the best film villains of all time and Kurtwood just knocked it out of the park with that character. Clarence Boddicker : You a good cop, hot shot? Well, sure you are. Why, you gotta be some kind of... GREAT cop to come in here all by yourself....You probably don't think I'm a very nice guy, do ya?

Yes, I would’ve included him and Kurgen from Highlander instead of Man from Bambi and the shark from Jaws. Possibly Cohaagen from Total Recall as well.

I would have added the Scorpio from Dirty Harry, Capone from The Untouchables, The Kurgen from Highlander, The Hitcher, Roy Batty from Blade Runner, Gaear Grimsrud from Fargo, Frank from Once Upon a Time in the West, Capt. Smith from LA Confidential and many more. I also feel that both of Robert Mitchum's characters were underrated on this list.

Where is Longshanks(Braveheart), Commodus(Gladiator), Stanfield(Leon), Agent Smith(Matrix), T-1000(T-2), Scorpio(Dirty Harry) Howard Payne(Speed), Col. Travington(Paitriot) John Doe(Se7en), Castor troy(Face Off), The Warden(Shawshank Redemption) Archibald Cunningham(Rob Roy), The Beast(Poltergiest series) Mike Myers(Halloween) Jason(Friday 13th) Leatherface(Texas Chainsaw Massacre) Pinhead(Hellraisor), Khan(Star Trek 2), Bill the Butcher(Gangs of New York) all are great villains.

Here are few Canidates the AFI should add for best Villian in the future: Bill "The Butcher" Cutting (Gangs of New York), Judge Turpin (Sweeney Todd), Catherine Tramell (Basic Instinct), Sherrif of Nothingham (Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves), Hans Gruber (Die Hard), Anakin Skywalker (Revenge of the Sith), Magneto (Xmen), Agent Smith (The Matrix), Caledon Hockley (Titanic), Green Goblin (Spiderman), Top Dollar (The Crow), Candyman, Karen Crowder (Michael Clayton) and Richter (Total Recall).

Good call on Palpatine. He would fit nicely in the #30 slot. Travis Bickle was the hero of Taxi Driver, sure he had his flaws, but he was still the hero.

Why isn't Emperor Palpatine from Star Wars up there. He was one of the best villains in all of movies. If it wasn't because of him Darth Vader wouldn't even excessed, he was always one step head of both Vader and the heros. And also Reagan McNeil wasn't a villain whatever was prossesing her was the villain so why didn't what was prossesing her as the villain not her. Apart from this great video.

I know! The AFI's Heroes list is more like the live action list! I personally like AFI's villains list better than the heroes list because the villains list have at least animated villains from animated films, which the heroes list lacks! The following animated villains made the list are: The Queen (Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs) #10 Man (Bambi) #20 Cruella De Vil (101 Dalmatians) #39

Hannibal Lecter was #1 when it came to Villians. Heath Ledger is right up there when he played the Joker from the Dark Knight. Villians are fun characters to play b/c they are such a huge stretch and they don't care if you like them or not. There are smart Villians like Saw Trilogy and Hannibal Lecter.

Dude you only think he's a shit villain cause of the prequels. Back when this list was made the Prequels weren't even shown. At the time he was responsible for torturing his own daughter, killing Luke's mentor, cutting his hand off and killing any of his men that failed him. Would you seriously want to mess with a guy if he could do that in real life.

Norman Bates is absolutely #1 of all time. And Travis is not a villain. And I hate such a unnecessary characters like Shark, Man, Cruella de Vil, Martians, Darth Vader (toooo high), The Wicked Witch of the West (same as Vader).... Real villains are people like Norman, Lecter, P. Dietrichson, M. Corleone, Alex, Frank Booth, Harry Powell, Harry Lime, Cody Jarett, HAL etc.

This fucking blows. This is a list merely of ANTAGONISTS. An antagonist can be anything including a fucking shark and a computer. Aliens from War of the Worlds?!?!? I understand where they're going with this but most of these villains are tragic figures, meaning they wouldn't of arrived at their madness had it not been for the protagonist's interference or something unforseen in their past. Glenn Close boiled a rabbit because of Michael Douglas. Get me? Mr.Potter is more evil than The Joker?!?!?
