I love AFI! They’re one of those bands who are constantly changing their sound (which I love!) Their earliest albums were straight Hardcore. They came from the Bay Area DIY punk scene. After that, they sort of morphed into their own take on horror punk as they all love the Misfits. Then, they went with this more emo/post hardcore/screamo sound. Then, it was more of a pop rock sound. Now, they’re doing a very 80s new wave revival sound lol. I love every phase of the band, but you’d have a hard time believing they were all the same band if you did a blind listen.

I was more drawn to their Horror Punk sound at first in 1999 with Black Sails In The Sunset, All Hallows’ EP, The Art of Drowning in 2000. But the phase that got me hooked was their Goth Era with 2003 Sing The Sorrow and 2006 December Underground. But even their later work with Joy Division, post hardcore alternative sound with Burials and Blood are fucking fantastic.

Fun fact, singer Davey Havok was asked to be the new singer for the Misfits when Michael Graves left. AFI is a band that changes constantly, first few albums were hardcore punk, then they added some darker goth/horror elements, then some emo and later even added some techno type stuff.

I love AFI, particularly this album and December Underground. Most old school AFI fans hated this record when it came out because they were originally a straight up punk rock band but they experimented with their sound with this record and got a lot of flak for it at the time. Personally I think it’s a great song but I respect your score and think you were very fair. They’re definitely an acquired taste but I’ve been rocking out to AFI since the mid-90’s!

AFI have switched genres so much, they have kinda transcend genres. they started out as a skatepunk band in 1994, then by 1996/1997 they transitioned to hardcore. by 1999 they switched from hardcore to horror punk with black sails in the sunset and all hallows ep, The Art of Drowning in 2000. By 2003 they switched from Horror Punk to gothic era with sing the sorrow 2003 : misseria contrae, the leaving song part 2, silver n cold, girls not grey, death of seasons. 2006's Decemberunderground with 17, prelude 12/21; 2009's crash love then their post hardcore, joy division like melodic stuff with Burials, Blood, bodies. i have liked AFI for years now, and can listen tot hem any day of the week, any season; and davey havok has so many versions and is such a good vocalist.

AFI was highly influenced by the Misfits and have done several Misfits covers the singer had a devil horn hair style like the Misfits for awhile in the late 90’s just like I did

AFI is one of the most unique punk bands I've seen. Because they're like a line between Punk, Emo, and even Goth rock at times. Obviously they're mainly punk, especially their early stuff. But it's cool to see their aesthetic and sound sorta blend 3 genres.

Great reaction, mate! I rate it a 7. Gosh, this song. This took me back to when I taught myself how to play it when I was a teenager - yes, it's a very simple song, haha. But damn, it's impactful, at least when you're a kid with lots of black make-up and green hair.

Hahaha...That was nice to see, here! Their hit you might know was "Miss Murder", which set me off on 'em. They're an old hardcore punk band that has retained its energy into its post-hardcore phases. You won't find much in the way of solos from the guitarist, Jade Puget, but he's always THERE, holding everything together...I like his style. The lead singer, Davey Havoc, is a straight-edge psycho! hahaha...bless his heart...I saw them live once...yeah, energy, they're bouncing all over the stage most of the time! Davey takes his frontman role very seriously...hehehe...They've lasted so long, I think, because their music is creative more than it is technically challenging, or, might I say, showy. I'd credit them with more than a handful of musical gems. This song is a good example of their not-too-recent work, but not a gem. The members are an odd combination of straight-edge and vegan/vegetarian, so, yeah, a little fruity...but fun. You gave it a fair review, Dave--I've learned not to argue with your scores! hahaha...I mean, if I agree with your explanation "WHY!"(love that drop!), then how can I argue with the score! hahaha

For a fan of punk, this isn't exactly the best intro song into AFI although it's not a bad one either. I love this song. I love old school AFI and the album this song is on (Sing the Sorrow, 2003) is the last AFI album I like. Their first few albums in the 90's sound nothing like this and are more straight forward punk albums heavily influenced by the Misfits, Black Flag, Bad Brains, etc. After this album they migrated to a more commercial sounding emo/pop punk sound that alienated most of their old school fanbase.
