I'd bring my own rifle just for sentimental reasons, that's why we buy the gun! To take big game and make memories Couldn't imagine using a rental gun on a once in a lifetime hunt

Well Dog...Between 1987 and 2016 I did an even dozen safaris to africa, split evenly between ranch and wilderness hunts. Gotta say, you have pretty much hit the proverbial nail on the head with your analysis. Good work.

In South Africa, a .375 H&H is the MINIMUM Calibre allowed to take dangerous game. It is also a very useful all-round calibre. I have a .308 Win and .223Rem as well. The .375 destroyed less meat than the .308. I use it often, as I support the "use enough gun" mantra. The .375 H&H has not proven to be adequate in stopping a charge close up of a big 5 animal. Hence, a back up rifle is a heavier calibre, as it needs to stop a deadly charge close up. We often use a 416, a 458 Lott or heavier to do this. As you said, the .375 can TAKE anything, stop a charge, NOT so much. I have hunted in SA for decades, and like you, support "fair chase". I applaud you for your deliberate extreme effort on your hunt. True Hunter. Many of your countrymen use "canned hunt" style "efforts", where animals are in a tight space and are tame. They are not deserving of being called a hunter. But you are, you earned the privilege! Respect!

You look so much like my late and much beloved brother it makes me simultaneously lonesome and happy. He never made it to Africa, but was he ever a hunter. Whitetail, Elk, Mule Deer, Moose, and Bear...he lived it. And, he was a passionate turkey hunter, and spoke their language. My family operated a commercial hunting lodge for twenty-five years. We retired after my brother passed in 2019. I enjoy the videos of your experiences, and the memories they stir of my brother. Best regards from Mississippi. PS-I never enjoyed deer hunting, and can't (according to my brother) be nearly still enough to turkey hunt, but I sure enjoy hunting feral hogs.

Great video as usual desert Dog ! I was thinking, one route one can consider if you're thinking about renting a rifle on site instead of transporting your own, would be to reserve an acceptable one (proven by your guide) which would be available to rent, and practicing with the same model back home. This could address some of the risk provided the rental was in perfect shape (which you could test/verify on site on arrival).

The real reason why game farm game reserve sable antelope ( swartwitpens) is bigger on game farms then in the wild is; farmers buy the best genetics at game auctions to breed into their stock , that is the only reason

Regarding iron sights: What ere your thoughts on peep sights . They’re faster than open sights and should get a longer sight radius than open sights. To be used on a 460 weatherby.
@desertdogoutdoors11135 ай бұрын
Peep sights do have advantages over Express Sights, especially accuracy for older eyes. But Express sights are also very fast, great for tracking moving targets, and have more visibility of the threat over the bore. The main reason for their use though, is to allow an optic to be used as the primary aiming device. For a peep sight to work properly and rapidly, it needs to be mounted far back on the reciever (which eliminates the ability to properly use an optic). But, if you plan on using Iron-sights only, a good ghost-ring sight is a great option. For a 460wby, I'd take a good red dot sight over anything.
