Worth noting that the low occupancy is because the video was taken around fast breaking time. Usually Al Boraq is much busier than this. Almost everytime I'ev taken it, it was at near capacity.

I lived in Morocco in 2007 and took the ONCF quite a bit. I don't believe there were any high speed lines at the time! This made me very nostalgic. I suspect you're not allowed to go to the open area between carriages, open the external door, and smoke while hanging out the side, though :)

Yeah the Al Boraq is much newer. The first Al Boraq train ran in November 2018 as the high speed line from Kinistra to Tangier was completed. More high speed trackage all the way to Casablanca is also under construction, which would reduce Tangier to Casablanca journey times to just 1 hour and 30 minutes by the Al Boraq train. I consider that extremely impressive to be honest.

Morocco shuts down during Ramadan?
@Speed_Rager4 ай бұрын
No. Just different work hours and like 80% of the restaurants close. You can still get take out or get delivered food tho.
@drdewott91544 ай бұрын
Well I'm not muslim, but I believe Ramadan means no eating at any time between sunrise and sunset during the period it takes place in. So all shops serving food shut down during this time, since eating during the day in the Ramadan would be considered sacrilege.
@Speed_Rager4 ай бұрын
@@drdewott9154 yes and no. You asked if Morocco shuts down during Ramadan, I said no and that's because we still work and function like normal. Ramadan is a whole month so a whole ass country can't just shut down for that long. Now, here is what changes: The work hours are different during ramadan, it's usually between 9 and 3pm (there are some exceptions). The food situation like you said Muslims don't eat but it's not as straight forward. Non Muslims can eat (even in public) as they're not expected to observe Ramadan. For Muslims, people who are too old or sick or physically can't do it, can eat. Pregnant women, or during menstrual cycle can eat. Obviously children eat too. Otherwise, if you just don't care and want to eat you can eat in private. For the restaurants, most close and open after sunset (people sleep late during this month so they stay open until 3-4am). But even closed restaurants will still have the option to deliver food (or take out) at least in Rabat and Casablanca where I live. So to answer your question again it's not a shutdown just a temporary change in daily life.
@Yanzdorloph4 ай бұрын
Morocco practicaly shuts down in most Moroccan and islamic holydays. in big religious holydays most shops are closed because most owners are amazighz that go back to their homes in the country side, but this is changing as more and more foreign companies take over, the locals are forced to adapt and give up on their holydays and stay open longer

Where the US, Canada, Australia, the UK, and half of Europe failed, Morocco has a true high speed line. Hopefully the future phases are just as successful 👏👏

People should focus less on Morocco being an African country, and more on it being a Mediterranean country. The Sahara, which is almost as large as Europe, is a much bigger barrier than that sea. So, just because they have a high-speed train running in Morocco, doesn't mean that we should expect the same thing in, let's say, Tanzania. (With all due respect to the people and country of Tanzania: I just picked a random sub-Saharan African country.)
@AdamAzzr4 ай бұрын
Doesn’t change the fact that Morocco is in africa
@SeverityOne4 ай бұрын
@@AdamAzzr No, but as I said, Morocco is aimed at the Mediterranean. The Sahara is about four times the size of the Mediterranean. Thing is, I live in the middle of the Mediterranean, having moved from Western Europe. And while there are many differences between where I live and North Africa, there are also a lot of similarities. And I think there are more similarities with the wider Mediterranean than there are with sub-Saharan Africa.
@Speed_Rager4 ай бұрын
You should focus on the fact that while Morocco, as you said, is closer to Europe than most of the rest of Africa, it doesn't mean that we didn't suffer the exploitation and downright criminal behaviors of the west. This had and still has a huge impact on the development of the country. So to say that it's closer to Europe and not an African country, it's like saying Morocco benefits from the wealth and/or stability of European countries. It is a much bigger struggle for Morocco to achieve milestones like these.
@drdewott91544 ай бұрын
Funny that you picked Tanzania, they're actually building one of the highest quality rail networks in Subsaharan Africa as we speak. Many african nations have begun building Standard gauge railways or SGR's as they call them, to provide faster and more efficient freight and passenger traffic. However most are diesel powered and still fairly slow at 120-150km/h speeds, and practically all funded by China. Tanzania's SGR on the other hand is fully electric, built and funded by Turkey and South Korea, and has trains electric express trains running on it at 160km/h from Dar es Salaam to Morogoro, with further extensions under construction. It has the fastest trains in all of Subsaharan africa apart from the Gautrain commuter service in South Africa which it is tied with. Tanzanias SGR may not touch the Al Boraq, but their trains are still the elite in new rail developments in the sub sahara.
@SeverityOne4 ай бұрын
@@Speed_Rager No, that's not what I'm saying. Colonialism happened in Europe as well: just ask the Balkans, and how well it treated them. Also, who built and partially financed the Al Boraq? At some point, you need to stop looking at the past, and instead look at the present with a critical view. The country I live in was a colony until the 1960s, and now has the largest economic growth in Europe.
