Like in other places, if you can't canalise each interest into a global culture of solidarity you're screwed. So the "défi" is more to create a sustainable administration by educating people so that when they become wealthy, they will be both less incentive to favour corruption, and both scared enough to not even creating a pyramidal structure to guarantee them being out of law without a sanction. The same problem you can find everywhere....so I agree with M.Macron, at least as far as words are concerned

So somehow Africa is the only continent on earth ever got colonized by European powers. No body else ever faced colonization by the others. Chinese, Taiwanese, Vietnam, Korea got colonized by Japan. Singapore, Hong Kong got colonized by the British. Even country like Japan was once in a position of facing colonial powers. But somehow the countries above listed are some of the most powerful countries, or most economically developed countries on earth. My question is, have you Africans ever thought maybe the problem isn't colonialism, but rather yourself being lazy af?

You cannot compare Algeria with the other countries of the French empire. Algeria was considered as a region of France in which more than 1000000 French metropolitan natives families were living since 4/5 generations. And by the way, African countries asked for help that is why france took part in so many wars in Africa such as in Tchad, Mali or center African Republic.

1. Macron isn't the first to be tied up in this form of controversy. Don't forget Sarkozys speech in Senegal from 2007, where he said: “The tragedy of Africa is that the African has not fully entered into history ... They have never really launched themselves into the future,” and “The African peasant only knew the eternal renewal of time, marked by the endless repetition of the same gestures and the same words,” 2. Historians like Bernard Lewis and Justin McCarthy would dispute what people are saying about the Amernian case. The Russian Empire supported a violent Armenian rebellion comprising a threat to Turkey at the time, and the Ottoman state attempted to prevent it. Did the French government do the same with Algeria? Were the Algerians colluding with another empire to invade France? Also worth mentioning that modern secular nationalism had divided the Ottoman state in a way never experienced before. How intense were Armenian rebellions before the influence of this ideology? When the Algerians rebelled, they did not threaten the security of France itself, and were trying to expel them from their own land. When the Armenians rebelled, Anatolia itself was being threatened by this rebellion. The Turks may have committed atrocities in trying to prevent this, but there's a clear difference between the two. Most would't even pay attention to the Armenian case if it wasn't useful as a point against Turkey.

It's crazy how here in France, our president is criticized because he actually said that colonialism was a bad thing (which is what most of us French actually believe except extrem right and conservative people) but in Africa people find ways to hate him because he said that the challenges OF TODAY are not economical or political but civilizational which to me would be a good way of seeing things... Of course France has made huge mistakes and still some French companies are not doing things quite as they should but we as the French people (not the political or financial leaders) are against all of this, except a minority that sadly has a big audience because of the way media works.

Beside all the bullsh* the French did and it is important to stress that they had made mistakes and still continue to do so, are you going for other colonial powers too? For the Dutch in East Asia, for the Spanish and the Portuguese in the Americas and latter in Africa and Asia too, for the British Empire and the US-Empire, for the Colonial Empires of Nippon or Russia? Or are you just trying to go for a power inside the EU that opposes the new Turkish Sultan?

+BARBATUS 89 Well, the Portuguese weren't "in" Africa - they set up trading posts along the African coastlines but they didn't set up permanent colonies (like French/British/German) The Portuguese empire looks more like a bunch of "join the dots" on a world map because their strength was naval transportation, so they could only reach places by sea and didn't go inland
