In one of the earlier videos, two thieves worked together, one knocked on the side of the car to distract the passengers while the other snatched the phone which was in the passenger's lap. Most people aren't gonna expect a thief to come out of nowhere and snatch your phone so they likely wouldn't be able to react in time if they had left the window open.

Last time I went to Vietnam, my cousin who lives in Saigon told me to never take out your phone in public. Always have your valuables within reach and sight. Give it some thought: If someone who lives there recognizes the snatcher, maybe that person will suddenly decide to go and beat the snatcher. Thieves are "protected" because personal justice exist and that's illegal.
