That last Lady really had a point, she born of 2 Americans but can't come to the US even though she is 100% American, the United States sees her as Dominican. She needs to be given her citizenship and let her travel freely between countries 💯

Fascinating history lesson! I found what the woman said towards the end interesting. She said she feels American. To be honest, if she came to the US, she would be seen as Dominican because she is Dominican. Her ancestors came from the United States had a different culture and came from a different culture than the one she grew up in from birth in the Dominican Republic, This video is an example of how culture and ancestry are two different things.

Indeed, from 1822-1844 period, aka the Unification of Hispaniola, African Americans emigrated from the United States (which shares North America with Canada and Mexico), to find a better in Haiti and the Dominican Republic. African Americans that settled in Haiti, formed communities in Port-au-Prince, Saint Marc, Croix-de-Boquet, and Cap-Haïtien. Those that settled in the Dominican Republic settled in the capital Santo Domingo, as well as Puerto Plata and Samaná peninsula. These migrants brought to Hispaniola besides the English language, the following religions. Protestantism, Christianity, and Methodism. These people along with Caribbean Blacks of the British West Indies are the reason why there are Blacks in Haiti and the Dominican Republic with English surnames.
@JM-pn5nu
@JM-pn5nu 10 ай бұрын
The Dominican Republic has been Christina and Catholic before this migration. Which is also why these people had an easier time adjusting into the culture unlike Haitians, who a lot of Dominicans don’t want there because they practice voodoo.
@DrillMondrian
@DrillMondrian 8 ай бұрын
@JM-pn5nu The island was Hayti, it was the president of Hayti JP Boyer who sent for these ppl. Not only did he accept free Blacks but he offered $ 2500 to US planters per slave families and free them. Kreyol speaking Haitians like Spanish speaking Haitians which you now called Dominicans both practice Catholicism and voodoo.

Really? because I am Dominican and my DNA says I am 53% European, 40% Black and 7% aborigen. "Kreyol" bet you are Haitian right? says everything I need to know. Leave us Dominicans alone!! and stop wanting to be a part of us. Have some self respect and self value and stop saying that between Haitians and Dominicans no difference exists because the empirical evidence on the ground tells a completely different story. Pathetic.

Haiti & the Dominican Republican are one, & the island will only be separated for so long. Your attitude only adds on to the conflict on the island, the Europeans have wrecked your perspective & your thought process, that’s why you’re insecure & feel that Haitians "want to be like" Dominicans😂 that’s why you feel you guys are different bc of the race & language. Europe has split the island & it continues to split her. But your way of thinking, which is their way & the old way, has proven unintelligent & unnecessary. Get it together mane

@@NostraNoSavin The peculiarities among Haitians and Dominicans are so profound that they are constituted into two different nationalities and sovereign states in the same island. What other proof is there to be? Not acknowledging and respecting those differences is actually more unproductive and offensive towards Dominicans because it fails to acknowledge their history and origins which predates that of Haitians by at least two centuries on the island of Santo Domingo. I am actually one of those few Dominicans which are not posed to a union with Haitians into a confederacy in which both people's uniqueness is preserves and valued, but I understand this to be a mere illusion the more I study the social, economic and political realities of both countries. Trust you me, by saying that both people are the same you are not only being dishonest and disingenuous, you are also not going to get any collaboration from Dominicans. Also, if you need further proof of those profound differences simply take a bus from Santiago or Santo Domingo or Port-au-Prince or Cap Haitian.

I thought that was interesting also! I am Haitian American born in the United States of parents that immigrated here in the 1970s. I understand what she means about “feeling” part of a culture, but the reality is how can one feel this way if the culture is not preserved? I “feel” Haitian because I grew up in a Haitian household, but my experience is still different than that of my cousins born and raised on the island due to the influence of the American culture I experience every day. I can only imagine the culture shock the woman in the video would experience if she moved to the US and lived here. Would she still understand herself as American? Even her mannerisms are quite Dominican. At what point does a family fully integrate into the culture they now live in?
@Ronaldo-rt7hl
@Ronaldo-rt7hl Жыл бұрын
They are still African American and they did retain some African American cultural practices especially in food and religion. Either way it's never too late for them to learn about their African American culture and reintegrate it into their community in Samana especially many African Americans don't know the depths of our own culture either but are slowly learning about it now.

Very good report! Translation from the lady who spoke spanish a little left behind that was important, and when she said she is American she means of the north because we are in the Caribbean American Continent. By the way when you said French, o Haiti, Spanish were first not French in the La Espanola Island; Haiti was established by the French and haitians were its military men not slaves. The African military man killed its superior French, and went to the Spanish capital Santo Domingo killing all Spanish, men, women and Children, when they passed by. Slavery was abolished by France during the French Revolution and its military Africans in the La Espanola Island killed their French superior because they were armed, and it scared the Norteamerican government offering the free slaves $40 dollars and a mule to form their own governent; some went to Panama, and other parts of Central Americans Islands.
