📜 Africa's Zulu Empire - African History Part 1 Extra History
With no written records from the Zulus themselves, historians and anthropologists have pieced together their history from a smattering of sources. We first learn of the Zulu as a minor tribe of the Bantu people, living in South Africa. Shaka Zulu, the man who would organize them into an empire, was born the illegitimate son of a Zulu king. He was sent away with his mother Nandi to grow up in her tribe, the Langeni, but he eventually caught the attention of Dingiswayo, the leader of another powerful tribe called the Mtethwa. Appointed as the leader of a squadron called an ibutho, Shaka developed new tactics including a short "iklwa" fighting spear and a simple but effective military maneuever called "the Bull Horn." When his father died, Shaka - now a successful military leader - returned with Dingiswayo's backing to assassinate the rightful heir and assume control of his native tribe. Just a year later, though, the neighboring Ndwandwe tribe murdered Dingiswayo and Shaka vowed revenge on their leader, Zwide. He then launched a bloody war that, combined with the strains created by European colonization, led to the Mefacane, or the Crushing.

Shaka did not refer to himself as 'Shaka Zulu' nor did anybody. He however was known as Shaka kaSenzangakhona, Senzangakhona being his father. In kwaZulu back then everybody took their father's name as their surname, the prefix 'ka' translates to son of and for women in isiZulu language we used the prefix 'oka' which translates to daughter of. Shaka Zulu is very strange and modern.

If you don't mind me asking, do you primarily consider yourself Zulu or South African? Do you think most Zulus and other South Africans primarily class themselves as part of their ethnic group (not sure "tribe is still accurate?) or nationality?
@Sinezungu
@Sinezungu 7 жыл бұрын
To be honest, I don't think I'm equipt to answer your question w accuracy. It would be arrogant of me to believe I could speak on behalf of others. What I can tell you is that one of the products of the apartheid project was tribalism. The apartheid government ruled by a divide and conquer strategy, pitting he different tribes against each other. This caused a lot of violence in the 90s, especially between the Zulu and the Xhosa. The post-apartheid government, however aimed to form a South African identity within the people of the country. an identity that would foster unity as South Africans instead of focusing on the difference that so heavily carries the burden of pain and trauma... I wish I could give you a simpler response
@mankytoes
@mankytoes 7 жыл бұрын
Sinenhlanhla Zungu Thanks for answering, that's interesting. I don't know if you're aware, but when people in the UK report of South Africa, it's massively over simplified, with references simply to "black South Africans", as if they are a united group. As with a lot of issues I guess, people seem to be happy with a simple "Mandela the angel v the evil boers" narrative than any nuance.
@Sinezungu
@Sinezungu 7 жыл бұрын
I think the oversimplification of things is such a shame. But, unfortunately, this is what tends to happen when Western media houses report about anything regarding 'Africa'. And I guess the "Mandela the angel v the evil boers" narrative is one that's perhaps more palatable and digestible. It's a simple story with an identifiable hero and clearly defined villains. But so much more happened in our country, so much more than that. This is the problem w trying to simplify social history into chiaroscuro, you miss everything that's in-between - and that's actually where everyday life happens.
@Sinezungu
@Sinezungu 7 жыл бұрын
What I also find really interesting are the lived experiences of people under the apartheid regime. If you're ever in South Africa, you should go to the apartheid museum in Johannesburg and the District 6 museum in Cape Town. There, multiple stories serve to provide a richer experience than what you might find while skimming through the history books

***** If any nation outside of the West is "overdone" in an historical sense, it's Japan. It's simply the one we're most likely to learn about, aside from perhaps the Americas, from beyond Europe.
@Croz89
@Croz89 9 жыл бұрын
putridspit We tend to do a lot of western history because a) western civilisation generally recorded events using multiple sources, both oral and written (some parts of the world didn't even have writing systems, such as much of the pre-colonial Americas) and b) many nations which relied on oral tradition to keep historical records have been greatly reduced or even completely wiped out via natural disaster or genocide/conquest. We know little about native American or Australian history because they didn't write anything down, and were almost destroyed by disease and genocide from conquerors.

An Iklwa is what it's called, the short stabbing spear. The Assegai is the longer throwing spear. Colloquially people use the latter name when referring to a Zulu spear.

Jobe isn't pronounced as Job from the Bible; the 'e' at the end is actually said, making it sound more like "Job-eh". "Dingiswayo" is also pronounced with the hard 'g' sound, like in 'good', not the softer 'j' sound. Zulu was first transcribed using English, so many of the pronunciations of the letters are similar to the English version. Ibutho, the regiment, is not pronounced with the typical 'th' diphthong, but as an airy version of 'T', making it sound less like a hard T as in 'tea'. Lol, I was waiting for a click! No. Mfecane is more like "umph-eh-ca-n' ", where the 'c' is a click made with the front of the tongue against the back of the front upper teeth, similar to the sound one makes calling a horse, so not "mehfekane'. The British didn't really settle Natal until after Dingane became king after Shaka's assassination, and it was the presence of the boers who had recently descended the Drakensberg from the northwest that led to the first euro-zulu angst. The British actually until the Anglo-Zulu war (entirely their fault) respected the border with Zululand and allowed the Zulus to self-govern and trade.
