I think many Africans, especially Kenyans, also don't realise that Somalis are clan oriented and do not readily mix with other Somali clans. So you have a conservative Islamic culture and Somali clan traditions acting as a barrier for social mixing and intermarriages with other Africans. The founding father, President Nyerere at the time, gave these people two options. One to embrace their Tanzanian identity or being shipped to the Middle East to reunite with their Arabic identity. Why do I ask that? What complicates this is the Human Genome thing. There's now a geneticist named Razib Khan who is rewriting human history. He's found evidence of "admixture" (or interbreeding) that happened long ago between different population groups. Here's a couple things he's found for Africa: (1) Ethiopians have quite a bit of Arab ancestry, and they're related to Saudi Arabians. (2) people from Madagascar have quite a bit of Asian ancestry, and they're related to people in Borneo. There's KZbin videos where he talks about this.

Frankly, it’s shallow to just call me black because my identity is much richer and in depth. lol Arabs are a Nationality, not a race, the term Arab refers to people who speak Arabic that are mostly located in the North East portion of Africa and the Middle East. There are black, white and even mix race Arabs, the Moors where Arabs, the Ancient Egyptians where considered Arabs, Black people in Jordan are considered Arabs, Black people in the Sahara Decert and Mali are considered to be Arabs. I came upon this sentiment just recently and I was surprised because, while I don't deny there may be Somalis who've encountered feeling ostracized by fellow Africans, it's not something I've ever heard. I know they experience discrimination based on harmful stereotypes, but I had just never encountered someone denying them being African before that comment. I feel like it comes more from them than others. The countries I know who don't like identifying as African are some of the North African ones (of course not everyone there shares this sentiment), but Somalia? That was new for me.

As a Somali Man the biggest issue with my ppl is they believe because we re Muslim thats our only culture. Somalia is only a name the Original name for my land Is Micorbia and the original ppl were called Micorbians. We are more Ethiopian ethnically than we are Arabs. Sadly my country were middle men with Arabs to enslave Bantu who are now my Somali Bantu who are somali imo but till this day face discrimination . Last year I stumbled upon a video on KZbin between young students aged 16-19yrs from different parts of the world who came to America on an exchange kind of programme. There was a 16yr old Somalian who argued he or they were not black or Africans and a Nigerian youth opposed him but to think this was filmed in 1957 and this Somalia child had such strong views against being black was shocking and this conversation is still going on 65yrs later. The Arabs and Europeans really dealth with Africans. They succeeded in dehumanising us and making the world dislike us. For over 1,500 years this has been going on. Africans (all blacks) need to unite and build a stronger Africa and every other Nation the soles of our feet have landed on and call home, from the Caribbeans to the Americas.

This is not a new problem. This is an old problem. I studied African history in college, and Somalia has had this problem for centuries! And when the cold war happened in the 60s 70s and 80s in Somalia - the fight was are you African or are you Arabic. America armed the Arabic side and the USSR armed the African part. We have to start learning all of our histories, so we’ll know how to deal with certain things accordingly.

As a Somali person, this is absolutely comical to read. We have never had an issue identifying as African. Somalia was richer and had a more developed civilization than the Arab peninsula. Why would they want to identify with a group of people they saw as less developed? Somalia has been Pro African since the beginning of time. They have fought against colonization and freed other African people from colonization. They funded independence movements and help trained their fighters. Also, during the Cold War, both sides try to court Somalia. Unfortunately, they betrayed them. So please actually bothered to learn about the Somali civilization properly. Stop reading propaganda. They hated us since the beginning of time for fighting against subjugation. East Africa, as a whole has been hard to conquer.

This is very true, I have seen and heard smalians in Italy say they are not Africans but they are arabs yet they did not know which Arabian country they or their parents come from. I have also seen some Mozabique young charcol black men claimed that they're not Africans but are arabs in Africa on a video from the famous harvard professor Loiuse Gossete Junior who was in Africa shooting docummentary on Africa.
