I do house a leopard geckos couple together it's been 1 year, i had to move out and things happenend so i decided to keep them together for a while, finger crossed (i had an emergency box but that's not ideal) ... Then got another terrarium (both 90x45x45cm) , separated them, and both wouldnt eat anymore, i was worried... after some worrying time i put them together again and they both accepted food again, now i'm still worried they hurt each other because that's what geckos might do (thankfully i see no agression besides soft bredding attemps), but i'm also worried they wont eat if separated ^^'

They just need plenty of time to adjust and they should be fine separated. If you keep them together there’s a high chance they’ll fight/breed sooner or later, neither of which you want to happen.

For substrate, 1 part sand, 2 parts top soil, 1 part eco earth works well and you can put plants in it if you want as an added bonus. They will also enjoy digging in it occasion.

My son has been saving up for years to get a Blue Eyed Leucistic Ball Python that he has already named Sans. Although he already has a fish tank, it's not big enough to convert into a proper enclosure so we promised him that if he saved up enough to get Sans, we would get the enclosure. Thing is, now we have this extea 10 Gal. I watched an old Wicken's Wicked Reptiles video about what you can put in a 10 Gallon because I thought that I may as well get myself a little lizard to put in there. That was when I fell in love with the Namib Sand Gecko, or as I like to call them, the adorable rainbow puppy gecko. Anyway, I would absolutely LOVE if you could do a video about them so maybe someone could start breeding them in captivity somewhere near Ontario Canada. I know they're not particularly cuddly, but I am ok with just observing them. They are so cute and derpy looking haha ♡.

some gecks that I would recommend are wonder geckos / frog eyed geckos , especially the Persian wonder gecko if your budget is more than a 100$ Basically most geckos under 15cm can usually live happily in a 10-15G aquarium

@@50meterworm oh absolutely! We actually have a floof baby already (cat) and she's loved him since the day She had him... let me explain. When I brought him home, she wanted to be with him constantly, she followed me around when I had him in my arms, she kept trying to sleep in his bassinet with him, and then when he was old enough, his crib. I didn't let her because she used to have a habit of peeing on stuff :S. Anyway, every time he cried, she would meow, and get really upset, clearly worried about not being able to help. So we joke that she thinks he is her baby. She even still bats at his legs sometimes when he's running around as though she's correcting the behaviour lol. (She doesn't have claws... long story, I am against declawing, but something happened where either I got her declawed or I would have to get rid of her. Turned out it was just people gaslighting me. Either way, she isn't hurting him when she does it.) So my son says he has two moms, me and her haha. It's a whole thing. ^-^ I will absolutely be posting about Sans as soon as he is ours ♡

I never had any intention of owning a reptile until I discovered AFT geckos. I fell in love with the stripe. I've now had mine for a year and I've enjoyed every minute of it. I also use a deep heat projector with mine and she definitely seems to prefer it since she's more consistently active since switching.

Nice! I’d look into using a halogen flood bulb connected to a dimmer or dimming thermostat, they’re actually more natural and beneficial than DHPs! The levels of infrared A and B they produce more closely mimic the sun (DHPs produce barely any IRA, the most beneficial wavelength).

For substrate, I like to use equal parts topsoil, sand, decomposed granite, and excavator clay. Mix it together, dump it in the enclosure, mist the top, and let it dry. The excavator clay makes it leave a nice crust on top to replicate packed in soil that they can burrow through if they choose, and the combination of textures makes it look (and hopefully feel) really natural.

I’ve kept AFT’s for 3 years now and I love their cat-like personality. But on ease of care I think it should be mentioned that they can be very picky eaters according their individual personalities and if they aren’t handling stress well (from shipping or rehoming or new cage or sometimes just from cleaning their cage) some finesse is required in teaching them to eat again. I have 6 adults and 2 hatchlings atm (more on the way). 4 of the adults are good hunters and will eat anything though one of them took 3 months to learn to do this when we first got her. 2 will not eat anything other than superworms which makes gut loading, uv and vitamin supplements very important to try to accommodate that restrictive diet. (I’ve tried every other feeder insect … they aggressively destroy the bug they don’t like and then spit out the mangled remains). The 2 hatchling are only 3 weeks old and already have individual preferences: one hates mealworms (he hisses at them) but loves mealworm pupae and Dubias. The other gobbles up everything offered. So if you’re interested I’d say be aware that feeding them can be a learning curve. I have had success in teaching bad hunters how to hunt by co-habbing them with an older female who hunts well. They do learn by watching. I’ve also had a male refuse to eat for months after being separated from his female after breeding season. They have huge variability in their feeding response and stress responses so I don’t think they should be someone’s first lizard unless you’re the type to do a lot of research and join a dedicated forum where breeders can answer your questions.

This video is what first made me aware of AFTs, and not that long after, I came across a pair in a bad situation that needed love. It was like it was meant to be. I adopted the female out, but the male needed extra TLC, so he has been living with me ever since. He's a delight, and my vet's staff loves him. He even got used as an ambassador animal for some of the techs who hadn't worked with reptiles before.

Substrate wise, the risk of impaction is pretty negligable as long as other care perameters (heat, nutrition, humidity/water, uvb etc.) are right. A play sand/soil mix works for most arid species (in different ratios depending on the exact environment they are from), clay based substrates can also be mixed in to provide more structure, or to mimic rocky substrates, for some species. Feeding in a bowl or some other container can be a good idea still if you want to limit substrate ingestion, but a little bit of substrate now and then won't harm them as long as they are able to digest normally and are otherwise well cared for. I will also note, the benefit of using naturalistic substrates isn't just about the look of the enclosure, but about the enrichment and provision of opportunities to display natural behaviours for the animal. These animals will burrow and interact with the soil in the wild, they deserve the ability to do that in captivity as well.

Agree, risk of impaction is hugely exaggerated. These animals aren’t so feeble that a sand substrate is going to be fatal for them. In the wild they have no problem with a variety of substrates, but you always hear people warning.

I have wondered how viable is to put different types of substrate in the same enclosure. We have wild lizards in our garden and they like to change places as the weather and seasons change. They need humidity they go to the dirt near the plants, they need heat they go to the river stones, they are shedding and the walk around the quartz gravel to scratch the old skin.

People are nuts at times. A healthy uromastyx, leopard gecko, AFT gecko, etc won't get impaction if properly taken care of as long as they're healthy. It's the ones that are unhealthy and aren't taken care of that can get impaction. I hate seeing uros and leo's on paper towels or carpet. Give em stuff they've lived on for hundreds of thousands if not millions of years. They react so much better in natural enclosures.

these geckos will use, explore and climb on enrichment so provide more than just a tank with two hides. personal experience has shown they will bask in overhead halogen heat and uvb, they are more active for it and it's way easier to provide the necessary ambient gradient than using a heat mat. The areas they are found in the wild have rainy seasons with most if the year having high relative humidity so if you want to avoid a dry looking gecko with stuck shed, provide a humid hide and spray the enclosure.

They absorb most of their heat from their bellies, using top down lamps first of all will stress them out cause of all the light and they will stay in their hide all the time, even if you're using a ceramic heat emitter it's simply not as efficent for them not as economic as a heatmat which is just 6$ on AliExpress for a 7W which will do for most of their lifespan until they need a bigger enclosure, then it's up to a 14W. Also they don't need UVB to survive or even thrive, it's a really small benefit which can simply be supplemented via D3. Unless you live in the states getting UVB in most of Europe is really expensive cause they're all built in the US, and there's a high cost and salary difference. As for humidity they don't need to be misted all the time, mostly a focus on their hide for getting shed off which you can manually remove if there's any left. Constant misting can cause respiratory issues and if you have a coco fiber substrate and/or vermiculite it'll keep it for a long time. But if you're using simple toilet paper once a week is enough in my experience.

@@LieutenantPhys They're nocturnal and ground-dwelling... They're going to hide during the day regardless, and should, because that's what they've evolved to do. If you have an AFT (or even a Leo) that's out all day long, every day... That's a problem. Heating, in nature, is sourced from above and heats the ground below - that's the "belly heat" you're referring to. We haven't had AFT's and Leo's in captivity enough to change their evolutionary traits - so emulating what they would experience in the wild should be the first method anyone should resort to before you have to rely on a heating mat for secondary help. Lastly, a heat mat with only paper towel or toilet paper covering the ground is just a disaster waiting to happen... Especially if it's not controlled by a thermostat. I hate to be like this, but I know how first-time buyers with very little to no education about animals are (I was one myself before I thoroughly educated myself with the latest research available). Especially with the wealth of current information out there (Reptifiles.com is my go-to), I don't really think that people should be going for the bare minimum and should be giving their pet the best life they can.

An AFT was my first reptile I was able to talk my mom into getting. We went to the store however to get a leopard gecko but they tried biting. The AFT never tried to bite and we went with it instead. I loved my AFT. Now years later I got my son a ball python.

Topsoil baby. I use a 40lb bag of no additive no fertilizer plain topsoil a scoop of play sand and a brick of eco earth, mix it up and ya done. I keep 4 Leo's on this mix and just added a couple aloe plants

Hi Clint! Love your videos! I have had 2 African Fat Tails for a year or so now, and I absolutely love them! I keep mine on a mix of BioDude Terra Firma, Spag moss and leaf litter in medium low Exo Terras. And their bugs are given to them in little bowls. They have seemed to thrive for the most part! They are very picky little eaters though, and my one doesn’t even eat that often. So I usually leave bugs in her bowl for when she feels like she wants some.

Been keeping reptiles for many years and I have always kept my geckos on jungle mix. I provide a wide flat feeding dish and use tongs. I have had a leopard gecko ingest the mix, and as long as he or she has plenty of access to water, impaction is not an issue with me.

I've got a AFT named Larry. He's awesome! His tail is beautiful and he's so sweet. I've got a carrot tailed leopard gecko too named George and a beardie named Charlie lol. I love my guys. Great video.

Excavator clay is my absolute favourite substrate because you can really shape it your liking. It is also saver then sand because it gets hard when dried.

Excavator clay is good as part of a mix or when used to make a background/hides, but it shouldn’t be the entire substrate. It hardens too much to offer digging enrichment, and doesn’t retain the humidity AFTs need. A soil/playsand/clay mix is good.
