The Sultans of Swing were a (mediocre?) trad jazz band. Mark Knopfler was walking home in Lewisham when it started to rain so he went into a pub to shelter. There was a live jazz band playing but none of the other customers were paying any attention to the music. So Mark was inspired to write this tribute to the band in the pub..The pub no longer exists.

Love this song, and there's nothing like watching a great band that enjoy playing their music. Dire Straights were one of the top rock bands while they played together in the 1980's, and Mark Knopfler was considered one of the best rock guitarists from that time. They had many great songs, and fans of all ages. It's hard to hear all the lyrics properly, but if you read them the interpretation is pretty straight forward. Great choice of song and performance.

"Sultans of Swing" was one of the songs from back in the day that inspired me to learn how to play guitar. It was the lead single from Dire Straits 1978 self-titled debut album. The groove was catchy, the story slightly spooky, and the guitar licks inspired. It stood apart sound-wise from most of the other popular songs released in 1979, for example, "What a Fool Believes" by The Doobie Brothers or "The Logical Song" by Supertramp. It went to the top ten in the charts and turned Mark Knopfler into a guitar hero forever after. The lyrics are a bit easier to make out on the studio recording. Knopfler embellishes them here and there in this performance, just as he embellishes the various guitar licks and fills throughout the song. Also check out Dire Straits "Down to the Waterline" also from that album.

The only live performance better than this is when Queen unexpectedly came on stage at Live Aid Wembley Arena and stole the entire show. Mark doesn't use a pick. He plucks the strings with his fingertips. He is also left handed and learned to play right handed so he didn't look different from other guitar players. 😊

The Lead Singer Guitarist Mark Knopfler Was walking along in London one night and went into a pub . There was a jazz band playing but nobody taking any notice . He listened to them they were called Sultans of Swing . He then wrote this song . Dire Straights are a top band Fay Please React to Walk of Life by them . Or Telegraph Road Or Brothers in Arms .
