The drummer is Terry Williams, on fire. He is now 76 and retired in Swansea Wales. He was known for hitting the drums very hard, and in my opinion, he was one of the best technical drummers around. His power and precision in this performance was unmatched. Mark Knopfler is one of the best guitarists in the world and likely the best finger picker. This performance is regarded as one of the best live performances in rock history. Other Dire Straits songs to listen to: Brothers in Arms, Walk of Life, Romeo and Juliet, Telegraph Road, and Money for Nothing.

Telegraph Road from this concert. Blow you away.
@erksworld96617 ай бұрын
I second/third Telegraph Road from the same Alchemy tour - they ended the show with Sultans and then came back with TR for an encore and blew the roof off. I saw them live a couple of years later on their Brothers in Arms tour (a couple of weeks before they were at Live Aid): they had a new rhythm guitarist but the rest of the main members were the same, a great concert. Terry Williams is known as a very hard hitter of the drums, much of his strength stems from the fact that as a child he wore leg braces and couldn't walk properly for several years; instead he heaved himself around the house at speed, supported by his arms - there's a documentary about him on KZbin where he talks about this.

Mark Knopfler is left handed and learned to play right handed so he didn't look different from other guitar players, he was self taught, and plucks the strings with the tips of his fingers instead of using a pick. And he didn't read music when he was learning. This man is definitely top 10 of all time.

I am so happy that you liked this performance! I was sweating for a second before I clicked to watch 😂 The lead singer/guitarist is Mark Knopfler. For me, he’s one of the greatest, but so many people aren’t familiar with him. I love the dynamics of this performance and how much fun they are having. Thanks for reacting to this one. I guess I’m 2 for 2 with the non-Prince suggestions!

Mark Knopfler's his name. He's 78, and has just released a new album titled "One Deep River." And, he auctioned off some of his many guitars at Christie's auction house in London, to the tune of about 8 Million pounds... for charity.

So glad you found this hidden gem , marks guitar playing is extremely beautiful and unique, unlike other players, mark uses techniques with his right hand, such as chicken picking, using the thumb on the base strings and second and third finger on the higher strings to create rhythm, and the flamenco technique used here in rhythm, which is a Spanish technique that uses upstrokes and down strokes with your right hand.

No one ever mentions the album "Sailing to Philadelphia " its my favorite. If you are a fan of history you will really like the title song S.T.P. He tells the story of a unique part of Southern USA history. No,nothing to do with the war of Northern agression. Several songs are stories of what the band saw on their USA tour. Mark Knopfler is an old soul,storyteller&poet of the highest order. And of course master musician. Let me go on....a kind,gracious true gentleman. Has given millions to youth (and other)charities. Every member of his band is talented beyond. Best songs to get to know Dire Straights .....Telegraph Road,Tunnel of Love ,Romeo & Juliet. And BROTHERS IN ARMS !!!!!! That should be your next review of this great band.

@garywhybrow22756 ай бұрын
Sultans of swing is not the 2 different songs you are referring too. This is about a Jazz band in a London pub that Mark went in. When they had announced they are the Sultans of swing, the idea came to him to write the song because he thought they definitely was not Sultans of anything let alone swing. The song he wrote around the time of the Falklands war is Brothers in Arms and the song you mention referring his ex girlfriend is Romeo and Juliet.
