People across Africa were actually living well until European colonialists took control of the natural resources to enhance their own wealth. Now that the occupiers are gone, new governments are still sending wealth offshore--into personal foreign bank accounts! Economist George Ayittey, President of the Free Africa Foundation and author of Africa Unchained: the Blueprint for Africa's Future, shares his ideas for how Africa can take control of its own riches, starting in the village square. Karen Saupe hosts.

African solutions? Good. But extreme discretion is required. People would love to undermine any effort at Africans getting it right!

Mostly the African leaders themselves, enriching themselves and creating hostile environments for wealth production.

I definitely think things could have been taken slower than how they went. We could thought carefully about the way forward.

I agree with everything he says except one thing. He never calls out American, French and British agitators in installing despots and grifters. Be honest about that part or it affects people’s ability to hear your message sir.

Don’t Africans have the agency and ability to defend themselves against these agitators? We need to stop playing the victim?

@@crisisactorr 100% in agreement. One minute, we are great etc etc., next minute we should ascribe some blame if not all to foreign powers. Which is it? Aren't we capable of running our affairs and be accountable?

The cardinal question is 'why africa susceptible to the dictatorial rulers? Why each and every individual get to the power turn into a brutal dictator that takes the wealth of the whole nation.

Fascinating. Is it really possible to talk of this chief/Council /assembly as across whole of Africa? How would it relate to larger clan/tribe?

Very disappointed to hear his take being against microcredit. I've heard about this idea of the African collective. But like Marxist-communism, it doesn't properly give incentive for individual achievement. That person should be able to improve their immediate condition and that of their immediate family. Instead, how many in the tribe do they have to share his success with? His book _Defeating Dictators_ seems to have a better plan of action for improving Africa.

35,000 years of tribal barbarity, only encompass 300 years Western Colonialism. When Colonialism ended, Africa reverted back to ....what it was doing before.

I completely disagree with this man on the issue of one party system in Africa. There was no record of any African country that created only one party system and adopted the model of soviet system after the colonial rule. 99% of African countries were colonized by the French, British and Belgium and just before these countries obtained their independence, several political parties were formed by the indigenous people to take over from the colonial masters. This guy's assertion that one party system were formed in majority of countries in Africa after independence is a fallacy. It is a big lie! Every country in Africa has multi-political parties. The major problem in Africa is CORRUPTION!!!!

+r s j: SOLUTION? You should have been able to figure that out in your mind. Capital punishment and that must be Public execution for any public office holder found to have engaged in embezzling public funds. It will serve as a deterrent to outgoing and incoming government. The problem in Africa is corruption and lawlessness period!
