I am a white American who lived in villages in Africa for 4 years. I lived in a house like this one for a year. When Americans see this, they generally think of poverty and dirtiness. But my experience was that these houses are clean and cool in hot weather, much cooler than "modern" cement block houses with tin roofs. I loved my house and my village. Life was so simple and pure. People do not have a lot, but you learn when living like this that you don't need as much as you think you do.

6:27 "Do you have grass thatched houses?" I live in Northern Ireland. Up until 100 - 150 years ago, houses with thatched roofs would be common here. Quite a number of old houses from that time are still standing and people still live in them. Some of them have had their roof replaced with a tile roof, but others still have thatched roofs. There are still a few people left in this country who know how to thatch a roof. I've seen it being done. Pretty much all new built houses though, are built with tile roofs. I speak for the way it is in Northern Ireland, but I think throughout all of Ireland and all of Britain it would be mostly this way - some older houses are thatch roofed, but new ones are tiled.
@Ann65.3 жыл бұрын
There were some lovely little thatched houses in Holy Cross, Thurles, Co. Tipperary. Near the old Abbey. I stayed there many years ago for months. Could have bought one of those little properties - if I had the money. There were twenty or so houses. Not sure whether its true, but I heard that they had been sold as job lot to some Company. Such a pity, if true.
@pedrob39533 жыл бұрын
Thatched roofs were common in many villages in Europe until some 100 years ago. In the Netherlands you can still find a few, if you really look for them in the villages.
