African Tigress if possible try to get a Trini to accompany you to these shows because they can add more context to what is going on on stage. For example this is just not ladies and men with competing costumes. The costumed individuals on stage are typically members of a Masquerade band that will parade on Carnival Monday and Tuesday. Starting from before Xmas Masquerade designers lay out the theme for the upcoming Carnival. The theme can be historical, societal or based on fantasy. The designer lays out the costume designs for the various sections of the band and each section design is unique but supports the overall theme. This exercise is similar to how a fashion designer will lay out a fashion design for the upcoming season. When the designs are complete the designer and the management of the Masquerade band will have a showing at a venue. Friends and family then visit the various band show rooms and decide if they like the costume and decide which bands they will "play in" or participate in for the Carnival. Each band's designer will then design a Queen of the band OR King of the band costume that is the most elaborate costume in the band. The band then designates who will wear the king costume and the queen costume to represent the band on stage at the savannah. These are the individuals you see parading across the stage and presenting the costumes to be judged.

Wonderful footage I've heard so much about the Brazilian Carnival and New Orleans Mardi Gras but not so much about the Trinidad Carnival. Wonderful costumes. Good morning African Tigress. You were asking about soca songs for carnival. There are much more than 5 but the DJs tend to stick with what most people like. There us one called Trinidad Sweet sung by Voice and a grenadian singer called Vaugn. That one sweet too but the DJs do their own thing
