Hello, cosmetic chemist here. Shampoos consist of anionic surfactants which carry a negative charge just as our hair. When we add warm-hot water, our hair cuticle opens and this allows for better cleansing. However, this also increases the hairs negative charge and causes more frizz. Then the regular rinse-off conditioner will come in and basically undo all that the shampoo has done except dirty up the scalp. It is imperative to use conditioner immediately after to decrease the negative “field” and improve the hair’s manageability . The deep conditioner (which isn’t always necessary) is meant to deliver actives and extracts directly into the hair strand (penetration) with the assistance of heat so it’s important to have one with purposeful ingredients! But if your DC is cheap, full of PEG/PPG-derivatives, or lacks cationic agents, it’s performance will be lacking. In short, it really just depends on what is in your [deep] conditioners. I love watching your videos, you always have such great topics ❤

Oils/butters great for hairs penetration: coconut oil, Babassu oil, sunflower seed oil, palm kernel oil, pracaxi oil, ucuuba butter, avocado oil, tucuma butter, murumuru butter, shea butter, mango butter (some penetration but great for elasticity)

What would be some of the ingredients that would be penetrative? (outside of the oils that you listed since that can be applied outside the confines of a deep conditioner)

As a cosmetic formulator I can tell you that the main difference between the two are the concentration of ingredients. If you look at a rinse out conditioner label and a deep conditioner label you will see that all the ingredients are essentially the same especially if you are comparing products within the same brand. Deep conditioners may have a high concentration of the functional ingredients in the product such as the cationic surfactants like behentrimonium methosulfate or behentrimonium chloride or the cationic polymer like guar hydroxypropyltrimonium chloride. However this is not always the case because some brands will cut cost by simply adding more fatty alcohols to their regular rinse out conditioner formula to make it thicker put it in a jar and market it as a deep conditioner. That being said there are really only two types of conditioners on the market budget or premium. A rinse out conditioner that is concentrated meaning it has a high level of the functional ingredients can be used as both a rinse out and deep conditioner. A cheaply made rinse out that has a low concentration of functional ingredients will deposit less on the hair and will not give the same results. Also when I say cheaply made …that does not necessarily mean cheap for the consumer. Some pricey products hair products are low quality products packaged an marketed well and the only thing premium about them is the package they came in.

@@cfoster6804 exactly. Perry Romanowski of Chemists Corner and thebeautybrain said on his website that what we pay for are the marketing gimmicks, fragrances, influencers' deception, packaging and advertising used in luring us to buy these products. He also said that in the laboratory, ingredients especially the functional ones do not differentiate with hair typing systems. In essence, all these natural claims and no silicone, no sulfate bullshit are just a marketing ploy to get our money and all these brands including black-owned ones encourage product junkism and pseudo-science by all these sales agents known as influencers.

To SOME of y’all listening. PLS PLS PLS be careful taking Narada’s advice. I loveeee this man’s info but keep this in mind cause I didn’t and it became problematic The people who see Narada regularly have healthy hair. Especially cause they see him regularly lol. When he says you don’t NEED to deep condition every week or trim every 6-8 weeks he’s talking about a lot of HEALTHY HEADED GALS. Now us “I hardly wash my hair so it’s dryer than the safari” or us extremely heat damaged girlies etc are a different story. Please don’t take his advice geared for healthy naturals knowing your hair isn’t that then say Narada’s advice didn’t work 😂 If you got severely damaged hair realize you may be trimming more often until your hair gets healthy and THEN you can go some time without. I remember sitting in a stylist chair and regurgitating some of Narada’s advice when the stylist was like “… yeah.. that’s for healthy hair.. you’re not there yet love”. My hair was so dry and broken i had to do “the most”. I was so used to my hair being like that I didn’t even know I wasn’t who Narada was speaking to. All in all great message wrong listener 🥰. Just please be honest about how healthy your hair is. Getting a professional opinion is ok too. Has your hair been hiding under wigs without moisture for months… years? Yeah you’re going to be getting trims for the breakage and really trying to pump moisture into your hair.

According to Perry Romanowski of Chemists Corner, Deep Conditioners are a thickened form of rinse-out. With the addition of more emulsifiers, we arrive at a deep conditioner. The best way to get better benefits from conditioning ingredients is to leave them behind. This means that Leave-In Conditioners are the most important hair product after shampoo.

My understanding of deep conditioners was that they contained hydrolyzed ingredients which were smaller molecules made to penetrate the hair shaft as opposed larger molecules of 3 minute conditioners which only coated, softened, and detangled the outer layer of hair. Whew, I have been following the natural hair community since the Kimmytube days years ago. These naturals revolutionized the hair industry and forced hair companies to rethink products for the type 4 hair ladies. This new era is building on top of that. I am continuing following this journey towards healthy hair goals.

conditioner also has hydrolyzed ingredients. if hydrolyzed ingredients is what you’re looking for you just have to look at the ingredients list. most times the deep conditioner and regular conditioner have the same ingredients but they thicken the deep conditioner so it feels like a different/ richer product. i use the Tresame coconut biologic conditioner and mix in my own hydrolyzed powders for when i want protein. same effect. my hair is very long and 4c.

He said if you enjoy how deep conditioners make your hair feel keep doing it. From the comments he uses deep conditioner, so he is not telling you not to. I did write a comment on Instagram because BGC was up in the comments trying to convince people of their methods 👀. Saying they have been trying to pry them from our hands or something of the sort. I was like ladies and gentlemen ( the lies ,the Lies🤣🤣🤣) because they just send out an email recommending we pick up some deep conditioner🙈🤣🤷🏽‍♀️. I have recently stopped deep conditioning. I wasn't seeing a helluva difference with deep conditioning which I only realised after switching to normal conditioner. I use normal conditioner with a bit of heat. My curls have transformed dramatically. I have been natural since before there were products for us. For the last few years I had been deep conditioning. Due to having no income, I started using regular conditioner and some diy every now and then and my curls have transformed drastically. I have low porosity 3a/b hair. I always thought my hair was great till I stopped the dc. Now I see I didn't need it in the first place, except maybe once every 6 months, if at all. And if I am in desperate need I can easily whip up something. And this is thanks to you and a few other experts giving us more informed and less complicated haircare tips. I didn't need half the stuff I was wasting money on.And I was really wasting cos I only need healthy, popping curls. I keep my hair short and have no interest in growing my hair. Thanks for busting a lot of myths around natural hair. Honestly I think my hair was better before jumping on every bandwagon that passed by me. Anyway, my short curls are thriving with reg shampoo and conditioner, my diy leave-in/styler and a little, very little oil. And my wash and go's are on point. I am 55 and my curls are back to how they were as a toddler when my hair was always finger coiled with olive oil and sun-dried .... before all the heat & chemicals and lots of manipulation XXX

Depending on the ingredients, this can be true. My deep conditioner of choice usually has penetrating oils without silicone that will last about 3 washes, but I will seal weekly with an oil free silicone based regular conditioner. A lot of deep conditioners and regular conditioners will have a combination of both so its really not necessary to have both if you have a simple regimen, but I like having everything separate since I find my hair styles react differently based on how heavy my conditioner is 😅

3:27 I don't think you can go wrong with a weekly moisture balanced deep conditioner, but I have always questioned if it was really necessary ever outside of braid take downs. If you deep condition, do you really need a leave in? Though if what he says is actually true, the bigger question might be, if you use a leave in, do you really need to ever deep condition? Are the only people who need deep conditioners people with color treated/heat styled hair? Based on your one client who did not use leave ins, oils, or butters with her routine and her hair was alright with the curly cuts, it would seem that all you need to do is one or the other at least. Of course, there still may be a lot of variables in all this, such as curl pattern or how roughly each individual handles their hair in between cuts.

From my experience and learning my hair I’ve experimented in the past to see if my hair could survive and thrive without a weekly deep conditioning. With that in mind I was also very aware of my moisture levels and how my hair behaved and looked when it was at its peek jet black in color little no tangles at all and 0 frizz with very defined curls without any gels. After a week I noticed the moisture at the ends of my hair began to deplete and even more after 2 weeks. Also was still using regular rinse out conditioner yet the moisture levels still plummeted. After a month and a half my hairs behavior and appearance changed more frizz accumulated from the ends working it’s way up and the hair was more prone to tangles/single strand knots. The dead give away that my moisture levels changed drastically was the color of my hair at the ends. I naturally have jet black hair and anyone with jet black hair knows the color becomes more vibrant when moisture is present in the hair and can appear ashy when lacking. But in this instance my hairs color change from the ends and worked it’s way up the hair appearing more brown and no longer the jet black hue it once was. Breakage also began at the ends more the longer my hair remained in that depleted state.

I agree thats it a timing/heat thing. I think the procedure we use is what makes the difference. For growing up, my mom and I used rinse out conditioners like a deep one i.e. apply to hair, wrap in plastic, sit for 30ish mins, then rinse out. Which gives pretty similar results. And this was with regular ass Pantene. Nowadays, i do occasionally grab a packet hair mask to deep condition. But this video has inspired me to go back to my OG hair care routine.

What you both said is my experience as well when it comes to commercial deep conditioner and rinse outs, hence why I mainly buy rinse outs. But I’ll also say that it is not my experience with plant-based ‘conditioner’ such as Ayurvedic powders. While they may not be as scientifically understood as we may like, they do have an effect unlike conditioners because they effect the cells of the skin and hair unlike anything I’ve ever seen. Plants are powerful in pretty much every aspect of our lives. I still don’t use them weekly (unless I’ve mixed an Ayurvedic tea with conditioner and preservative-I do this when I wear twists back to back). I normally use them every couple of months or just when I have the time since it’s an added step. You know I don’t like taking a lot of time to do hair. I use them in my face daily and they make a world of a difference. I wasn’t convinced they would do anything for my hair until I saw what they did to my skin. I was sold after that. I can’t explain what it’s doin, but it’s doin something that I don’t get with conditioner 🤷🏾‍♀️ All that said, I also don’t think they’re necessary for a healthy hair regimen or growth, like some people tend to imply. But they’re a great supplement if you’re trying to get more out of your routine and very cost effective if you don’t overdo it.

I use deep conditioners sometimes, if I have time. I really can't tell the difference tbh.

For me it depends on the product. There are a lot of DCs that feel like regular conditioners. For my hair deep conditioners by natural hair brands containing lots of oils and butters were a game changer but everybodys hair is different.

The speaker is a cosmetic chemist. He knows the truth. Deep conditioning is a process not a product.

Why don’t you use rinse out conditioners anymore? Maybe it’s not necessary? I don’t use deep conditioners anymore just rinse outs. I feel like shampoo and conditioner works well for me every wash day. It softens and adds moisture to my hair. I don’t know how my feel would feel NOT using what I’m so used to using. I’m saying all this because I really want to experience being a client at your salon and I’m feeling skeptical about you not putting rinse out conditioner in my hair. Sorry, for the long comment. Hope I didn’t sound rude. Thanks and love all that you do. ❤

He doesn’t use rinse outs as deep conditioning treatments, he uses them then rinses out after detangling. You can watch videos of his wash process on his clients.

You misconstrue. I don't use rinse out conditioners on my Loc clients. I never have. It never felt necessary and it would only cause build up. To this day i still don't and my Loc clients' hair are all thriving. I make exceptions for those that need it but the need for it needs to be there.
