When I took down my braids the other day and wasn't ready to go to the salon. I put in my plaits after washing in pinned them across my head. It got stretched. Took 2 days to dry but it got stretched. That is why I let my stylist blow dry, my hair takes all day and night and morning to dry

@ForbsieLaLa I had that issue years ago but now I wait for my hair to be damp before I do anything . And I also stopped layering my hair with tones of products. I use indirect heat on the medium temperature if I am in a hurry but usually it's 4/5 hours from top to finish for me. Medium twisted style included. Or 3 hours for a wash and go.

@ForbsieLaLa you can try smaller sections, twists over plaits because it allows more air flow, and wrapping hair in something like a t-shirt or microfiber towel. Using your dryer on the cool setting will dry your hair faster too without any heat. I'm no stylist but doing my hair and my family's hair for decades and these are some things I found to help. Maybe they might help you too if you're looking to use less heat when doing your hair at home.

For anyone wondering why. I initially didn't tag her name to avoid being messy or directing drama to her page. When this first popped off on Instagram, she wanted to talk shit in her comment section about how I didn't give her the benefit of tagging her in my video of her so that she could clapback. So in this video I obliged and needless to say she didn't clapback mostly because she couldn't. I didn't make her look bad she kept pushing the issue and made herself look back. She thought I was just some messy black man and didn't expect to be intellectually disarmed in this video. Her response to this video was a subliminal post that said it wouldn't be worth her time to argue with someone that Harriet Tubman would've shot. Once again she's trying to deflect and assassinate my character as a means to negate and invalidate what I'm saying which is what people do when they don't have a leg to stand on. I didn't have to point out her appearance, or her character/attitude or tone. I kept it all about hair and science the whole time. My initial video I stated that heat contributes to the damage and degradation of the hair and this video just further expounded on that.

Another gem dropped by an OG natural hair stylist and KZbinr. This video highlights one of the many reasons I love listening to him. You kept your composure while dropping pure knowledge (loved the studies you included). You showed people that the title of a “natural hair stylist” comes in different competencies and equipped them with information to spot out the stylist for them. If y’all want a stylist that can manipulate your natural curls, that’s great! There’s someone for you. If you don’t mind your hair being blown-out every visit, that’s a okay too. Just keep in mind that heat can damage your hair, and you can enjoy the “benefits” of stretching out your hair without heat.

I'm one of those people that got heat damage even when heat protectants were used. 😬 I stopped using heat on my hair for YEARS after that. It was to the point that I had family that asked me if I could straighten my hair to be a bridesmaid in their wedding and I told them if I have to straighten my hair I'll be in the crowd baby. 🤣 I have used LOW heat since but I think it's a little ignorant to say heat doesn't damage hair when it's been proven time and time again. The issue here was her blow drying her clients hair EVERY APPOINTMENT. Every single one sis??? So I agree with him. I don't think it's fair to say you're a natural hair stylist when you don't... Deal with the hair's natural texture. 😩

My stylist is a pale man with 2B curls, he never blow dries and can cut, curl and style my 4C hair to perfection every time! 🤔 He's never "struggled" with my texture, he embraces it! I have soft fine hair that is prone to knotting, mid shaft splitting, and tangling if i even blink without acknowleding its sensitivity 🤣. Blow drying is a big no no for me. I do it once per year as a length check and it is always on the cool setting. I also get my eds trimmed in its natural state. I have been to many "natural" hairstylists and requested that my hair not be blow dried and they do acquiesce, but I can tell they are LOST. It is very difficult finding a natural stylist who is confident on working with texture. As confident as I am to rock it, my stylist needs to be equally as confident in doing it.

I really thank you for shining a light on this. I cannot stress this enough I don’t use heat on my hair! If you cannot do my hair without adding heat then you and I have nothing we can do for each other and that includes trimming/cutting. I don’t even allow tight cornrowing etc. I know a lot of this attitude is rooted in colonialism and just pure laziness but it is way past time we understand and learn how to properly care for our hair minus societal expectations.

I'm a white hairdresser, so not as educated in textured hair as a black stylist, but I have worked in a predominantly black salon and am a little more educated than the average white hairdresser. I mainly bring this up because of the push back to people being mad you used a blow dryer, I may not always agree with my client but if they want something (within reason) I'll do it, I've cut a ton of mullets in my day. It also doesn't mean we suggest to do things like that regularly. Just like sweets it's OK to be bad every once in a while. Non textured hair has a lot of problems with heat stuff, too, along with people using harsh products on their hair. My family is super religious (I'm not) and the women don't use heat or products on their hair and never cut it. A lot of my clients wish they could get half that long but they never will because the use of such things. My own hair is to my mid thigh, curly but not super curly. I use heat a couple times a year. I loved learning the different techniques people with different textures use in this comment section. Thank all you natural beauties for sharing some knowledge. I admire the hard work it takes, but it's well worth it. Edit to add this was my first vid of yours and I'm a sub now. Great work.

There are many ways to stretch hair without using heat. I never needed it to grow out my hair. After bad heat damage back in 2018, I greatly reduced my usage

My mother whos not even a hairdresser understands this basic concept, every time I suggested her blowing my hair out to make it easier for her, she absolutely refused & just did my hair without any heat. This whole use heat protectant doesn't fly with me because it is not fool proof. The only heat that goes to my hair is the blow dryer (every 1-2months)but my stylist does not use max heat, She understands my hesitancy to use a flat iron because they last time we did it my hair would not revert and we had to let it grow out and cut every month to reduce damage. It took almost 2 years to get rid of it all because I had just past shoulder length hair at the time. Every time I saw my hair I wanted to cry. I really wish they would stop with the nonsense. Some hair no matter how much protectant will get damaged. Flat-ironing is a risk, some are luckier than others.

Smh...I'm sorry you experienced that. Two years worth of growth that would have put you at waist length hair had to be cutoff. Heat damage is the worst on African hair textures, because we're told that our hair can stand all of those things being done to it. Hair coloring of natural hair does the same as heat damage to our textured hair.

Yeah I actually got heat damage after flat ironing my hair once 2 years ago. I didn't even pass multiple times or use a high setting. I think it was just the combo of products with my heat protectant, it literally relaxed my hair without the actual relaxer. I was devastated.

Licensed since 2007 here, I also DO NOT specialize in Natural hair, But When I Did have Natural hair clients as opposed to My usual Caucasian Clients (Because u specialize in Fashion color/highlights/Cuts and Bombshell round brush blow outs, I Used the could setting when drying Natural hair with a Alcohol , paraben and coconut oil FREE leave in then either an Argon or Jamaican Castor oil after to seal the hydration in. The cool setting Helps to seal it in. Also point dryer down the hair strand while lightly but firmly holding hair straight but Not really tugging. Just pointing the dryer at your head and blowing it is like petting a cat from the tail up... Not good for the hair strand. That being said though, just because there was a video of her blow-drying does not mean that she is not a good stylist. We have no idea if her client requested that or not I have flat out told my clients that if we bleach their hair one more time where we don't rinse it out right now it's going to fall off their head but if they think that they see a little bit of yellow they refuse to let me rinse it. That's exactly why I have people sign waivers if they go against my recommendation

The issue is not that she's blow drying hair. The problem is the wrong information she is spreading by saying it won't damage hair and rather benefits hair. Bleached hair, relaxed hair etc can all grow but it doesn't mean they are healthy or that those processes are making them healthy. They will give you the look yes and that's OK if that's what you like or that's what the client wants but someone who calls herself a natural hair stylist should be able to style hair in its completely natural state.

Facts Narada, I used a heat protectant on my hair and a few strands of it still got damaged. I just pressed it 2 times by a week...not even everyday! Natural hair does not love heat excessively. You have to be careful with it!

I agree with the statement that heat is damaging to your hair, as it is a fact, but I feel like we place too much blame on heat being the sole source of damage. Majority of my clients experience manipulation damage. Like 90% actually. It’s from these high tension styles, headbands, improper detangling, and the list goes on and on. If someone stretches their hair out with heat to lay the cuticle straight so that manipulation goes smoother. I feel like it’s worth the heat. Thoughts ?

I’ve never liked heat on my hair in ANY form! that’s why at 58yrs old I haven’t been in a salon in over 20yrs... you’d never know💃🏽 I’d get a wash and cut, throw on a scarf and hat (in the winter) or let it air dry in the summer... No disrespect to the “experts” but you can’t let everyone in your hair, a lot of people don’t have a clue what they’re doing! I used to give a stylist one opportunity, if they effed up I didn’t return🤨... a lot of them think they can do whatever the hell they want just because you sit in their chair... I’ve learned over the years that you have to listen to your hair, give it what it needs, keep it clean, stop putting all the harmful products in it (perm/dye etc) and start paying attention to what you eat and drink: Water/Water/Water has a lot to do with the health of your hair... I notice AfrikanHairGod is the only stylists I’ve heard mention diet when it comes to hair health... he immediately gets my attention✌🏾💜👍🏾

Hello and welcome. I've never used Dyson but to be honest there is nothing special about it. It's a blowdryer just like any other. It works and functions just like any other. It blows hot air. The flamboyant bells and whistles are just embellishments to justify pricing

Omg people if you want to blow dry your hair then do it & if not don't. What works for some may not work for others just do what's best for you & keep it moving, don't have to debate about everything or try to call someone out for doing what works for them.I for one us my blowdryer brush faithfully & no heat damage. My job isn't to go and police how other stylists do hair. The issue and biggest takeaway here is that when you have a platform and you are giving advice as a professional, you need to be more responsible with your words and be able to take accountability. Messaging her would have accomplished nothing... She simply would've have said what she said here, which is my clients don't mind so why do you? The problem is her promoting misinformation as a professional. Once you put it out for public consumption, you need to be able to stand by your words and back it up or be able to take accountability and say that you were wrong. She couldn't do either and just decided to attack my appearance and character every chance she got. Once she made it about something other than hair she already lost the debate. Social media is a powerful tool but it comes with its own responsibility

It's not going to come back. Hair doesn't work like that. Hair is a fiber meant to be preserved. You cannot repair damage to hair or make your hair like it was before. And olaplex don't work. Save your money
